6023 'The Blue King' Loaded Test Runs - Severn Valley Railway 2018

  • Not since 2013 have we seen a Great Western King Class working in all her glory, but at the end of February 2018, 6023 ' King Edward II' is seen out on a series of loaded test runs on the Severn Valley Railway. The test runs were primarily to test out the King's new modified draughting system and a smaller blast pipe along with other new alterations that are needed for mainline running, although mainline running has now been put on the back burner due to the locomotive still falling foul over the majority of the mainline network and the costs for mainline tests alongside it's boiler ticket, which is in it's later stages.
    Many Great Western enthusiasts have waited a long time to see this engine venture away from it's home base at Didcot and finally see it stretch it's legs a little after being restricted to the demonstration line at Didcot. The tests were declared a success with the crew of the loco saying 'She performed better than expected' The Blue King will now headline at the SVR Spring Steam Gala in the coming weeks !
    I hope you enjoy the video, also there's the bonus of an 8F on the mainline to Shrewsbury which happened on the same day, video is featured at the end !

    That king in blue looked amazing

    The King is magnificent, just as I remember seeing them in the 50's and early sixties. Even though she is painted an un-natural colour.

      That’s one way of putting it.....’painted an unnatural colour’. I’ve frequently commented in the past about its current appearance.Does anyone know when it’s going to be returned to its proper colour?

    Blue engine, red and cream coaches - lovely. Plus the added dead weight of that diesel made her work harder than she will at the Gala. I do like the slightly harder exhaust sound from the single chimney!

      looks nice but can you GWR fans tell why they are right hand drive when the signals are on the left of the tracks surely it would not have been imposible to put a leaver on the left, even if it had to be bent a bit

      that's the great western bark

      Most fireman are right handed therefore it is ergonomically more sensible for the fireman to be on the left of the footplate. Signals were not always placed on the left but when they were it didn't matter too much as 1. it was just as much of the fireman's duty to watch for the signals as the driver's. In fact that was part of their learning the road. The drivers who had learned the road knew where the signals were anyway and he and the fire man would watch out for them as they approached. 3. From 1906 onwards the GWR had an automatic train control system that gave an audible and visual indication of the state of the signal ahead and applied the train brakes automatically if the crew failed to acknowledge a signal at danger indication. This greatly relieved the pressure on the footplate crew although they still were expected to keep a close watch on signals. Of course, no matter what side of the footplate the signals would be on, they would be on the opposite side when the loco was running in reverse as was common not only in tank engines but also on freight tender engines.@@tomskupham

    Thoroughly enjoyable, thanks Liam and Phil, with great sights and sounds from a splendid variety of locations on the SVR. The 8F was a real bonus and it was very good to see the 'near miss' from both sides of the track. Kind regards, Bob.

    What a sight! This is the first thing of any consequence I've looked at today - it's only 9am here on the eastern side of Australia - but that blue King is beautiful!!! I am SO looking forward to seeing GWR engines "in the flesh" in August!!! :D

    The left hand cylinder seems to be losing rather a lot of steam, but sounding very good. Couple of terrific shots climbing up the bank through Eardington.

    • @JohnSmith-pd1fz
      @JohnSmith-pd1fz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ++AndreiTupolev++ Certainly the first clip would suggest a significant leak from the left cylinder. Later on not so much though. Dragging a dirty diesel around was all part of the trials no doubt and probably caused the slipping seen and heard in the first clip.

    Great video. I know its probably the camera angle but at 4:03 the buffer beam looks very close to the platform edge. Super footage.

    Wonderful footage of both locos Liam! I'm not what may be called "A dyed in the wool GWR fan" , so maybe I'm not qualified to give an opinion on a King class loco, but here goes: Although I'm a great admirer of the GWR system, and a huge fan of 5043 in particular and Castles in general, I've not been convinced that the Kings come up to the normal GWR standard of performance. However, this performance by 6023 is quite outstanding and the best I've seen on a video. The bark from the exhaust is amazing and the reduced chimney height really enhances the looks and sleek lines of the loco. It's just a pity that it's return to the main line has been delayed yet again, but once it's let loose on the network, look out for some sparkling performances! Great work Liam, don't need to tell you to keep up the good work! Best wishes. Ken

    Wonderful coverage of these two events Liam, the King still doesn't sound right to my ears, but that may be due to the modifications they've done on her. It's about time that Didcot sorted this important loco out, before it will be too late....Regards....Bob

    Kings have a double red route availability. During their working days they would not have been allowed on the Severn Valley line. Why are they allowed nowadays where they would have previously been banned?

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      She's in gauge, just about ! With the railway being now private it changes everything, I can imagine how strange it would be to see a King on the SVR in steam day's !

    Doesn't sound right to my ears... That German blastpipe has really altered it's bark... And now that it's been announced that it isn't going on the mainline (at least not on this boiler cert.) it begs the question what was the point of it all? Should have left it as original as possible and kept it on the preserved scene. They could have opened it up a bit on the gcr if needed anyway.
