      It’s interesting how the Chinese were trained and equipped by the Germans around the 1930’s before WW2 yet the Chinese were invaded so easily by the Japanese, does that mean Japanese doctrine is superior to German doctrine? @@razr-x9666 the japanese didn't invade china at ease in fact it was the exact opposite, the chinese despite being considered poorly-equipped by europe's militaries were able to repel offensives launched by the japanese thanks to a people's war and protracted war being waged instead of favoring pitched battles and frontal assaults, only japanese propaganda says otherwise.

    The world wars have always interested me, not because of the sheer amount of power or brutal consequences of both, but the technology used during them.
    It’s crazy to think that people came up with these and put them into action.

    • @vere9652
      @vere9652 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree with you. But I also realized, that so much technology potencial was destroyed during war, scientists were killed, factories were bombed, and those who weren't were producing tanks instead of cars, poisons instead of medicines. If someone says (not you), that wars gave us technology, it is partly true. Yes, we gained some technologies due to war, but the number technologies we lost is even higher.

      @@LyvlonLP If the engine is broken?

    • @MatthewSmith-sz1yq
      @MatthewSmith-sz1yq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      @@LyvlonLP 9 times out of 10 if a car suffers a no-worky without crashing into anything, the issue is in the engine or drivetrain. Being able to swap engines means you can keep the actual car running for decades, and just swap engines whenever it breaks. This, in theory, means that instead of having to build 1000 new humvees each year to replace attrition, you only need to build 100 humvees and 900 humvee engines. Unfortunately, nowadays consumer cars are designed to be "single use," even though most broken down cars that haven't been totalled in an accident could easily function with a new engine. It's kind of crazy when you think about it, we literally throw away an entire car because a part or two in the engine doesn't work, simply because it's cheaper and easier to buy an entire new identical car than fix the one or two items that broke. It's that hard to replace an engine in a car, that in most cases it just makes more sense to buy an entire new car.
      The comparison in the original comment isn't a very good one though, since the engines are VERY different. One is a turbine, the other is a regular combustion engine. Comparing the two when it comes to replacement times is like comparing the time it takes to replace an aircraft propeller with the time it takes to replace a boat propeller. They are similar, but have a lot of major differences, it's an "apples to oranges" comparison.

    • @mangalores-x_x
      @mangalores-x_x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@NotAreaSP The VIII is highly misleading. Like other super heavy tanks this was just a concept prototype. The program was terminated and its equivalent in the E-series development which was the actual plan for future tanks in the Wehrmacht was scrapped as well. So it never was Panzer VIII.
      The other misleading part is the implication that the Wehrmacht went with super heavy tank craze when those heavy tanks were dedicated for particular roles, in the case of Tiger I before WW2 even started. Their equivalent in the Soviet army were the KV series and IS series and just like them they were never intended to replace all tanks, but be the spearheads in offensives. The problem for Germany: After 1942 they were never again on the offensive so those tanks were used outside their mission spectrum.
      And even the denial of still building them can be explained: The entire German military doctrine for centuries was pretty clear that you needed to bring down the enemy you need to go on the offensive... otherwise you lose the war... because German geography is crap for defense... oh dear... oh dear.

    • @lucky_x8367
      @lucky_x8367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      I wouldn't say that they are espacially over exaggerated.
      The Tiger tank wasn't designed to be easy to maintain or cheap to repair. It was designed to be a breakthrough tank.
      Basically being deployed where the enemy is especially stubborn, breaking through their defenses and going back to the next depot where they would have the time, space and resources to be fixed properly.
      After all germany would be on the offense, taking land and could decide where and when to advance.
      The role it was pressed into was very different with the Wehrmacht being on the defense, losing ground and being short on supplies, where the shortcomings started to be more noticable.
      I.e. you couldn't just recover vehicles that broke down, due to an overheated engine or failing transmission, during an fight right after, since the ground they fought on would be lost to the advancing enemy (soviets or allies) and they have a bit of a problem with an german tank towing truck just driving through their lines, recovering a 60t vehicle and towing it back to a german depot.
      Oh and on a side note: german tanks where notriously difficult to repair, my favorite example would be when the transmission on a Panzer III needs to be exchanged.
      Step 1: get some cranes.
      Step 2: REMOVE THE TURRET OF THE TANK
      Step 3: Losen some easy to excess bolts
      Step 4: REMOVE THE UPPER HALF OF THE HULL
      Saw some pictures of that process and it was a very interesting sight.

    EXCELLENT simplified explanation via animation. Very well done.
    Most people do not realize how ridiculously FEW tanks the German Army had compared to the U.S. or Russia.
    Germany made a total of 46,000 tank type vehicles of which about 15,000 (at most) were battle type tanks of all kinds.
    Opposed to the U.S. who made 25,000 of the Sherman tanks alone, finishing at 49,000 Shermans just after the war.
    The Russians built 84,000 T-34's before they were through, shortly after WW2.

And in the Korean war several years later, the Pershing peformed so bad that they got replaced by the M4 Sherman(How ironic, the thing you're replacing is the one that replaced you) In my opinion the Pershing is overrated for what it is, it's definitely not a bad tank but definitely not as good as people would often say

    One BIG thing missed on the panther, and also to remove remove to slow down a myth which could be sustained through this video.
    The improvements on the transmission a whole the Ausf. G had better alterations of the transmission which made them far more reliable as a whole, from there on breakdown on the transmission result mainly due to the design flaws and and quality parts due to lack of resources. But even then quality varies, design flaw is constant. I'd also like this to get likes so information like this is seen.
    The design flaws being the final drive gear.
    The problem with the panther's final drive is that it's made up of straight-cut spur gears that are too small. The design of the gear had to distribute a lot of force upon a small area which was quite bad, if the quality was low the gear was likely to shatter from to much stress.
    The Panther Ausf. D-F had weak final drives. It used straight cut spur gear made from steel of varying quality that was designed for a 35 ton tank in which ended up being a 45 ton tank, where a sturdier type of helical cut gear from high quality steel would've been far more preferable. (Though more time consuming and expensive to make)
    The Ausf. G variant made some improvements to the final drive. Most of the sources I've been able to find sources and technical documents stating that the housing for the final drives was stiffened up, which reduces some of the stress and flexing thus improving reliability overall, but if didn't solve the fundamental problem of the final drive gear itself.
    Overall the transmissions reliability was improved but the final drive itself was not, thus is this a flaw for all panther to this day as if they are able to run, might just break from the badly chosen gears.
    So finally reliability was not really much of a problem for the transmission anymore, it was now all placed on a design flaw, a problem of the vehicle.
    Another thing, I noticed, there was a ball turret on the Late Panther D in the video, that should not be there, it should happen in later on yes, but on the Panther A variants
    Basically I'm tryna state the transmission problem was mostly solved.
    Now second I'm lost, why would the J variant use the wire mesh. Wire mesh is more difficult and expensive to produce which would be rather counterproductive than a simple sheet steel. Wire meshed needed to be layered out and individually attatched/welded to the frame, schürzen was a simple rolled steel plate, more resource used but cheaper and faster to make.
    I don't research wire mesh often so this threw me off completely.
    Also I have no reliable source for this right now, isn't sheet steel just as good as the wire mesh in stopping the Soviet antitank gun, after all the purpose of the schürzen was to stop the Soviet anti-tank round not really HEAT munitions.

      The Leopard 1 had relatively thin armor, even less than WW2 medium and heavy tanks, as the designers thought that HEAT rounds would nullify any benefits of heavy armor. However, when the Leopard 2 was developed, composite armors allowed for protections against APFSDS and powerful HEAT rounds, while not being Ludicrously heavy. Tiger II is heavier than M1A2C and Leopard 2A7, but the newer tanks have far better armor.
