"...like a burden too heavy" is a reflection on the struggles and limitations we face as humans. Some refer to the "human condition," others may speak of "sin." But at some point, we all feel weighed down by our inadequacies and shortcomings, by our often futile strivings.
The title of the piece comes from Psalm 38, in which the writer laments,
"My guilt has overwhelmed me
like a burden too heavy to bear."
And later he writes,
"I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you."
My hope is that the performer senses and reflects some of this weariness and weight in the music. However, it is up to the performer and audience alike to decide what it is that causes this heaviness, personally.
My high school band has asked the whole percussion section to learn and play a marimba solo and I chose this song to play. Wish me luck!

This was well over a year ago at this point, but you were a judge at one of my indoor percussion competitions. Wish I had the chance to say hi. This was my 9 weeks exam for band yesterday. I really love this solo! 😊
I am playing this for an Individual & Ensemble competition for indoor drumline in April. I somehow (I don't know how) managed to maneuver my way through it on vibe. Overall, I can't wait to perform it and it is an amazing piece!!!
