La Campanella - Solo marimba version!

- Danish marimbist Anders Elten presents his new solo marimba arrangement of F. Liszt's concert etude for piano "La Campanella" - the third etude in the "Grandes Études de Paganini" series (S. 141).
The thematic material of the etude derives from N. Paganini's 2nd violin concerto - Liszt ingeniously combines the simple material with numerous virtuoso piano techniques designed to dazzle the audience. The piece ebbs and flows with contrasting A/B sections - playful, yet somehow restrained, "A" sections give way to joyful "B" sections that charge ever forward, gradually building momentum.
The technical challenges of the etude are amplified manifold on the marimba, but I tried to stay as faithful as possible to the "layout" of the original etude, preserving as many voices and techniques as possible. I had to transpose the entire etude in order to better preserve high/low contrast. The result is devilishly difficult, showcasing a wide variety of usual and unusual marimba techniques such as double octave skips, superfast triples, three/four note one-hand arpeggios, one-handed three-voice polyphony, octave + fifth intervals and "extreme wingspan" passages. I'll probably eventually tweak the arrangement slightly and then re-record it - however for now, please enjoy my first attempt at bringing "La Campanella" to life on solo marimba!
If you want to give this arrangement a go, it is now published by Edition Svitzer! Please find it through the following link: www.editionsvitzer.com/catalo...

socks on carpet to reduce step noise is genius
It also reduces reflection of sound into mics!
@@anderseltenmarimbareflection is cool though
@@zaccsonofjohn1132 That could be! The tonemeister for this recording, however, preferred to avoid it.
En ymmärrä vastausta.
What that mean's?
imagine playing so beautifully you make the piece sound like it was meant to be played on marimba
Dude, this is pure insanity! I cannot believe my eyes and ears. Probably the best I've seen anyone play the marimba, including my amateur self. The technique, range within and between hands, dynamics, you're too much man! Haha keep it up!!
Maikel
Thanks for the kind words man!
Beautiful
I just came from watching someone play Fantasie Impromptu on a marimba now THIS! The percussionists deserve way more spotlight than they get cuz yall are absolutely winning out here!👏🏽👏🏽
I barely understand the pure clarity and accuracy he has. Amazing job
Incredible arrangement. So technically expressive, with such a high level of musicality. Bravo~
Thank you very much!
I love how you stepped back on that last note but kept your right foot in place- it's like you are playing a vibraphone and you want the last chord to resonate. Andres, that chord resonated with me and I'm sure it did with everyone watching this. Truly masterful playing!
I didn't even notice that - but I see your point now! Thanks for your kind comment.
I like his mixtechnique: Stevens on left, traditional on right
Burton grip also gets an honorable mention towards the end of the piece!@@jumisanfe
That ... was ... UN .. BELIEVABLE! Bravo x 1000 ! Amazing. Not sure if most folks know that the keys on a marimba are graduated in width so playing octaves etc. requires constant adjustment of the 2 mallets. Not to mention the suberb recording of that excellent sounding marimba .. wow. Mallet selection perfect. Fantastic one-handed rolls/trills with .. modified Burton/Musser grip in right hand and Stevens in left? So great. Thank you so much for sharing.
This is insane. how is it even possible on a marimba
Hi! Just finished listening and i have to say, other than the transcription being really, really astonishing, what really swept me off the chair was your technique, being still a student i find this extremely eye-widening to what the so called "skill ceiling" of our instrument is, and wanted to say that even given the extreme difficulty of the piece, your voicing is sublime.
Hi, thanks for your kind comment! Yes this piece seems quite difficult now - however, I'm sure that future generations of marimbists will be eating this for breakfast eventually :)
Agreed! All the technique in the world would have limited interest without phrasing and musicality and this has it all
Always loved hearing this piece on piano. I didn't expect a marimba version to be just as full. Amazing work!
the way he plays so relaxed is magnificent!!
Those right hand chops are INSANE!!!!
I don't think I'm overstating it when I say that you are changing the language of the instrument. I'm amazed by every video you post. I wish I were a kid again seeing something like this for the first time. It redefines what's possible. Apparently, everything is. Thanks so much for posting!
Thanks so much for your very kind comment!
This is incredible ! I'm always amazed to see people pushing the limits of their instrument 🤯🤩
WOW those one handed chromatic runs are incredible!!!
it's like mallets are controlling him and he's just going with it that's so cool
for the tremolo at the top i found that you can put mallet 3 on top of B but mallet 4 below C and move your arm up and down rapidly for a louder and more clear tremolo.
Hmm, a mandolin roll - that's actually a great idea. Adds an extra little theatrical element, too. Nice catch!
That’s amazing! Didn’t know the marimba could be used to play difficult pieces like this one.
Thanks! To be honest, for a long time I didn't think so either :) takes a bit of effort, but its doable!
@@anderseltenmarimba you are very humble, and that makes it double admirable. You are the best, man!
Wow! Superb.
After a stressful day this was just what I needed. I feel wonderful.
Extraordinary.
Crazy good Anders - your playing is something else!!
Thanks Filip, that means a lot especially coming from you!
@@anderseltenmarimba Oh, you are too kind! :) Hope to see you soon!
You are a magician. I love this piece. I can play some Liszt on the piano, but this is still out of my reach.
The piano version is one of those uncommon pieces that can bring tears to my eyes.
Your performance and feeling did the same.
Thanks, that means a lot to me! Truly happy that you enjoyed the piece, even on the marimba!
@@anderseltenmarimba 🥲👍
those one handed chromatic runs are ridiculous. thank you for sharing
Woe! What just happened here?! I’d say arguably the finest marimba performance ever! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That truly sent shivers down my spine! The piece is difficult enough on piano... but on marimba it would surely be ridiculously impossible?!? Wow, what virtuosity!
Bravo.
Bravissimo!!
This is incredible. Simply epic.
Amazing as always!
This is SO GREAT ! ! !
You are amazing, that's just the definition of perfection, you are inspirator, thank you for share such an incredible performance
Thanks for the very kind words!!
absolutely outstanding.

Absolutely insane man!
¡Que barbaridad!
OMG that is amazing!!super good omg!!!!!
Wow, I’m impressed 😮❤
Incredible❤❤❤
Simply stunning. Incredible talent.
Magnifique performance !
Magnificent performance!
Fantastic ❤
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!
amazing❤❤❤
Unbelievable technique !
Wonderful acoustic giving the same effect of piano pedal. The arrangement is very clever, transposed to f minor, keeping the essential of the music while playing at most 4 notes at the same time on an instrument with less notes. I also really like the added ornaments not written in the original, Liszt would like it for sure! The use of the wooden part of the stick gives a clearer sound, I wasn’t expecting this possibility. And the interpretation is also incredible, you are a true musician, not only someone who has good technique!
Thanks a lot for your very kind comment 🙏 glad you enjoyed the ornamentation, haha!
Those diddles are insane. Nice job!
Thanks a lot!!
Phenomenal Phenomenal performance 👏 Bravo Bravo 👏
Brilliant
Most splendid and magnificent interpretation, sensibility and technique. Super bravo!!

Gold medal for you! 🎉

superb sound in my HT-
"busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger" . .
I just know those one handed chromatics with 3 & 4 were near impossible to do, oh my god... That takes some seriously insane skill. Absolutely amazing.
Crazy virtuosismo!!
Браво 👏👏👏👏
BRAVISSIMO ANDERSSSS!!!! BRAVISSIMOOOO!!!!
Best piece ever
Amazing! Really love your playing :)
I'm very happy to hear that, thanks a lot! =)
Nice play! Is that Steven's grip on the left and cross grip on the right?
fantastico
Astonishing performance, didn't know the marimba could support such difficult pieces like a Liszt-Paganini etude. You absolutely nailed the chromatics and the coda, it sounds so good! You can be proud of this performance 🎉
Thanks a lot! Yes I was kind of surprised that it could work out, too!
Insane
How do you even improve from this? This is absolutely peak marimba performance- it's crazy!
wow
This is beautiful man hats off to you!!! I’m only confused on the shaft on the bars for just for a couple seconds… bur truly an outstanding job on this I mean it!
Those one handed chromatic runs kinda blew my mind 😅😅
El mejor marimbista del mundo 💯
Inspiring. The embodiment of whoI'd wish to become as a Marimbist.
Wow
Hello Anders, what was the thought process behind using different grips?
Hi Sebastien, it's a good question - basically, the left hand has pretty huge intervals at times, so Musser/Stevens was a good choice for that. In the right hand it comes down to preference, there are a lot of elbow shifts that are awkward with Stevens, so I decided simply to go with traditional. In the end I switch to Burton grip, as I feel it's just somewhat easier to play the fast octaves with that, and I needed all the help I could get =)
How do you read sheet music while playing marimba?
One like on TH-cam is too little. I wish I could see you in a live concert!

👏👏👏
What a frustration! No way to applaud! A performance like thjaat should ber met with uproarious applause.
It's such a good performance! I'd like to get a sheet music, can I get it?
Definitely, I will make it available soon - if you can't wait, send me an email at Anderskannelten@gmail.com and we figure something out
great performance, by any chance do you have sheets for this arrangement?
Thanks a lot! Yep I did finish and write down the arrangement - shoot me a message here on TH-cam or Facebook and we'll get in touch about it!
It's the perfect arrangement as i dreamed of writing for so long for Marimba. Do you sell this arrangement?
Hey! Thanks a lot for your comment! Actually, it turns out that it will be published very soon by Edition Svitzer - I'll share the information here once it happens =)
Estás muy perro carnal , te alquilo esas manos .
SUUUUUPEEEEERRRR
Ahh this just makes me smile. May I ask what mallets you’re using? May need to pick myself up a pair. :)
Very happy to have contributed to a smile :) sure - it’s mallets from Resta-Jay, France: 3x Johan Bridger series orange mallets in top and 1x Jean Geoffroy series green mallet in the bass. Really nice and versatile mallets!
👏👏👏🎉
❤
Is there any sheet music online available on this one?
Hi Arthur, the sheet music is available through Edition Svitzer. It’s quite a challenge - go for it! 💪
i wish i could follow the melody more so i could enjoy it MORE wow...
Genius and incredible musician!
Wait a second...are you performing this with the left hand in Stevens grip and the right hand on Traditional grip??
(Maybe I'm wrong... but your hands are just so accurate and fast🎶)
Yea, I remember in I think his Paganini 24 video comments section he explains why. I think it was something about traditional feeling better doing the super closed intervals for him whereas Stevens is better for the constant leaping and interval changing you'll see in the left hand? If you want even more of something to think about, watch his Right hand at 3:58, he switches between Traditional and Burton - which I'd imagine is for the locking octaves you see later on.
Hah, good catch! Yes, that’s pretty much correct - traditional for the fast “one-handed” stuff, Burton for locking in the final octaves and Stevens for the large intervals in LH. There’s certainly more to it than that, but that’s the essence. However, any grip/combination of grips could probably work here :)
This is incredible!! Do you give private lessons?
Thanks a lot! Sure, I have a pretty decent Zoom setup for online lessons (physical is always preferable, though). Feel free to shoot me a message on Facebook or send me an email.
TRADITIONAL AND STEVENS??!! so coolll!!
