  • 403 Oldsmobile V8 - Purchased on August 25th 2018. Nothing says father of the year like a full size station wagon. More to come.

2:24...........great to see a video of it with the key chime still working. And I LOVE that beautiful chord chime that came with the Driver Reminder Package. It sounds just like either a grandfather clock or a slot machine at a casino.

I have a ‘90 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon like this, with the later version of the Oldsmobile 307 4bbl V-8.
It has the same aluminum wheels.

    A beautiful car
I’ve had many Oldses: 3 1985 Delta 88s, 83 98 Regency, 83 Custom Cruiser, 77 Cutlass Supreme, 78 Delta 88, 65 Dynamic and Jetstar 88. Miss those cars. Only the 94 Ciera left. Just got it running well again after two years of challenge. Fried wiring harness from
the ICM to the 2nd Cam Position Sensor was
The culprit. That’s an rocking car.

Yes, they sold a bunch of those in the US. I had an '87 which was identical other than being light brown with a tan interior. They are SLOWWWWW with a 307. Your car has Buick Estate wagon wheels on it. I'd check the engine numbers if you haven't already. Block casting number is between the water pump and intake, head ID number is in the lower left corner below(NOT INSIDE) the valve cover. 403's have 4A heads and nothing else. The valve cover color looks like 1974-6 Olds 350 metallic blue. 403 engines are all originally Corporate blue. Knock may not be serious. That vinyl woodgrain is called Di-Noc.

Originally a 307, Now a 403 out of a '79 Firebird. I checked cause I thought otherwise with the engine, but it is the same as my '78 Buick

You can raise the compression ratio of a 403 by swappimg 350 heads on it. Just in case a hop up is in order.

I am glad to see your purchase. You can fix that and get it running correctly. I really enjoyed seeing it because those are quite nice. The last of the true rear drive Oldsmobiles. I know they moved the power seat controls to the door as that is where they should be. Someone swapped the 307 V8 out. I appreciated your other video where you fixed the Cadillac Deville with the vehicle speed sensor / transmission sensor problem. I have the same issue on my 1995 Oldsmobile 98. I took the bad sensor out and I am waiting on the new one to arrive. I have a 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado as well. The seats are the same one the used in the Eighty Eight and Custom Cruiser for years. Thank you for sharing.

Ooh....i like that it has the factory full gauge package.
Olds had a 403...most likely was that since it literally would bolt right in in place of the 307. Its definitely an olds engine.
Check your alternator fan it could be loose and it will sound just like a lower end knock.
Also...it could be the crank hitting the oil pan. It doesnt take much of a dent to make that happen. I know this, because I had that happen to me with a buick 455. I knew it wasnt a bearing because it didnt knock when i test ran it...but it did once installed in the car. I fixed it by welding a nut to the oil pan and pulling the dent out with a slide hammer.

That is a beautiful find! The color is similar to my 88 Cadillac Deville. So nice to see the wood grain intact and the turbine wheels. Definitely get that one running right. Lots of room for furries in the cargo area! 🐺

Swap in a chevy 350. The trans is a 2004r and it has the multi bolt pattern so it will bolt to a chevy motor. Just change the mounts and the location of the mounts. The holes are already in the frame for the chevy motor change over .More dependable and parts are way cheaper and easier to get.

      Don’t put a Chevy engine!
      Keep it Oldsmobile.

@@patrickflohe7427 Why .... do you think its a valuable collector car? If you want a good dependable car put the chevy engine in it.

Olds engines are at least as dependable, more really, than a Chevy.
That’s what I’d build, if I needed to swap an engine in.
In my garage, I have an Olds 350, an Olds 403, and an Olds 455 on stands.
      I also have a Buick 455 & a Chevy 454.
      A Chevy 250 6 cylinder, and a ruined Chevy 307.

    • @suewatson1912
      @suewatson1912 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@patrickflohe7427 Are you sure the ruined motor you have isn't an olds 307 because if it was a chevy motor it would be 50 years old, since chevy hasn't built one since 1971.

      Definitely sure.
      I’m absolutely positive.
Olds V-8s are markedly & obviously different than a Chevy.
It was an old ‘78 Chevy 307 that someone had put into a Chevy p/u that I had bought, & they had told the previous owner that it was a 350.
Outwardly, a Chevy 307 looks a lot like a Chevy 350, just as an Olds 307 looks a lot like an Olds 350.
They have nothing in common, however, with the other brand.
-They just happened to have the same displacement.

  • @patrickflohe7427

    That’s an Oldsmobile V-8.
    Might even be a 403.
It almost sounds like it could be a smog pump noise.

I’ve had three station wagons and one was a 1978 Olds Custom Cruiser. It’s unbelievable how similar that 1978 is compared to your 1990. My Olds had a 350 in it and after owning some cars with the 307, my recommendation is to go with at least a 350 in a car as heavy as that wagon. If you want a 403, find out if that’s what is currently in the car. You may end up rebuilding that one, as good 403’s are relatively rare being manufactured only three years. Good luck on your latest project!!

So jealous of how clean this thing is. I picked up one of these that was modified to look like a purple hearse for what I now know was too much money. Shes real ugly and not running right now but I want to see it through.

  • @twoeightythreez
    @twoeightythreez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

That is definitely an olds motor. Before you swap it, check to make sure the oil pan isnt slightly dented from the engine swap. They were very thin stamped steel and there wasnt much room between the crank throws and the pan at the front of the engine (where the weight will sit if someone isnt careful when setting engine on shop floor).
It will sound like a knock on the lower end. You can verify by feeling the pan while engine is running. A rod knock wont make the oil pan vibrate, but a dented pan WILL vibrate.

    Chevrolet Caprice (1990)
    Buick Estate (1990)
    Pontiac Grand Safari (1989)
    Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (1990)
