I have been teaching piano for over 20 years, and have played a lot of New Orleans piano, and have even played in New Orleans, and I can say this is one of, if not THE, best instructional video I have ever watched on this style of piano! Well done.
Hey Johnny, I started two years ago after. 55 break. It is very difficult because still working( surgeon).Try to. have more fun and change and perhaps remind on my youth. With classics easy peace’s slowly my tension is less but I love blues and in my youth time in Poland there were good jazz and blues. The west songs were not played. So it’s my favourite and now I. found you learning in. easy style .I am excited and start today with New Orleans blues lessons and after. 1 month write you Thanks very much!!
Really want to become a good blues and jazz style player as well as boogie woogie and dr.John style of gospel blues….please make some more of those type of lessons thanks 😊
This is the lesson I’ve been yearning for since I first started playing! Dr. John is the very inspiration behind my desire to learn piano in the first place. Never thought I could ever get close to playing like him but this lesson gives me a glimmer of hope. Thanks Johnny! Or should I say “ Dr. Johnny”? 😎🙌🏻
I always liked his line "I'm only the greatest piano player because I lost a finger, otherwise I'd be the greatest guitarist too" or something along those lines. Great musician, love his sound.
This was one of your most intriguing lessons. Really hooked me! Just might show my appreciation and reward your effort by signing up for a course or two. Thank you!
dude you are the best piano teacher in the known universe. i've played guitar for 40 years, bluegrass band for 15, studied classical and jazz, well, every style pretty much. started playing piano almost a year ago, and it's coming along nicely. your approach, sense of humor, knowledge, and ability to really simplify things is a collective gift to any aspiring keyboardists or pianists out there. i have pianos and keyboards and organs and synthesizers in every room in two houses now. the wife literally dares me to drag another one home. i have gotten more out of your youtube channel than anything else. you are incredible player, too. god bless you. there's nothing more noble than bringing the joy of music to the world, especially with such user friendliness and exuberance. piano is the most amazing instrument out there, i only wish i would have given it a try earlier in life, but thanks for the good work. its not so scary after all.
Love the lesson, thank you! Do you have records to recommend to listen in particular for this style? So we can pick up some blueeesy lines from it? Thanks again! ❤
Where's the video on the how to make your blues playing faces!?!? LoL👌 😜😜🤗👍 I love you Jonny. You really are a gifted and fun teacher. 🎶Ohh, Teacher I need you.🎶👍😘❤️💕
I just came across your TH-cam page and I'm so glad to have discovered it ! Very interesting, informative, enriching ! I'll spend much time on it and I found yet many answers regarding chords, techniques, skills...Congratulations for being such a fine pianist and pedagogue. And incidentally for your good humor and smile. A very big thank you from France.
Good morning Mr. 🎹 WIZARD🎹 Jonny! Thanks a lot for this awesome tutorial. OUTSTANDING. So nicely and transparently presented. I am a 🎹 beginner and it's so incouraging your explanations. Now I need to practice what you are teaching and dig deep into it. Again thank you so much. You are so inspiring.😍 Greetings from Spain. 🙏OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADME SIDDHI HUM🙏
I enjoyed the video! Any ideas for a deeper dive into New Orleans Blues Piano? I'm a member at Piano with Jonny, but sadly there are no more courses in this exact direction (of course, there are many other great videos, but I'd love to get more knowledge to this topic)
This is your first video I have seen thus far and I'm a new subscriber now and think it's safe to say you are definitely gifted in knowing how to teach piano without the lesson becoming dreary or lulling, so thanks so much. Gonna be seeing if you have any on Professor Longhair as well, since I know Dr. John based a lot of his technique off of him and I love Dr. John so much. Love the style and trying to improv etc. with it so much, and you just helped me learn how to grow those attempts. 🙏😎👍
I don't really play piano, but this is VERY good, spending some time today starting the left hand. Maybe Jonny covered it, but my problem the 7th measure octave turnaround when I forgot we're still swinging this. E octave (bar 7) begins on the 'and' of 1 and accentuates (swings) the down beats thru the measure ending with the 8th bar the same swing pattern as bars 1-6. I must be getting old taking a while to see this ;-)
Another amazing lesson, Jonny! But, I don't think this is MY left hand. I don't know why it is on the end of MY arm, because it is obviously doing someone else's bidding. Any offers? (Hey, it's laugh or cry!)

Thanks for this lesson! If you do I full comprehensive course about traditional New Orleans piano, I'm SURE suscribing to Piano With Jonny!
Why do you write dotted quarternotes in the left hand, while you play staccato-quarternotes? You should better write staccato on beat one in every measure. BTW: Staccato dotted quarternotes are uncommon.

20 years of listening and trying to discover the roll and chromatic and you decided it in 10 minutes!!! Love this most of all the Johnny lessons
Awesome, thank you!

Arthur migliazza gives some awesome New Orleans similar lesson but many more variations and awesome basslines
Would love to hear others from this genre: Little Feat, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc. I've seen very little about how to sound like those pianists.
Little Feat forever!!!
Yah let’s hear Skynryd how
This is the sound that made me want to play piano in the first place.
