Malin, Johan & Vera
OMG, Nothing melts this old grandfather's heart quite like a gruff-looking Viking lovingly watching his little daughter work on his ship.
I have been gardening with only a shovel for turning the soil too.
I wouldn't even know where to begin with a project like this. You guys are an inspiration! And how awesome that your great-great-grandkids will be able to look back and witness every step of their ancestors' lives' work!
Oh that's easy you begin with your cheque book.
@@FrankLowe1949 You can't pay your way to the craftsmanship abilities that these two are exhibiting.
Well said!
Who needs sailing when you’ve got dad and Vera getting some quality time together! The boat work is bonus material!
Johan's an amazingly skilled woodworker and sailor, while also being a great father. Such an awesome family.
When I had a similar project, where I needed to build a template/ mold, I used lightweight self-leveling cement and added a lot of fiber strand and a layer of flexible mesh into the cement. The result was perfect. It was rigid, light, and strong. The company that I contracted to build my project said it was the best template they had ever been given and that it allowed for exact scanning and molding.
Good thing you have Vera helping to speed things along. 👍
"Toad Break" LOL That's awesome!
Every workday needs a toad break. Well - maybe only every 2nd day.
14:36 The look on Vera's face. Discovering the world and showing it to Papa. No price. 💖 She just naturally loves the minute.
I have missed many episodes of your story, and I would like to catch up. I last saw you as you entered British Columbia. Where can I find details of your new ship? I would like to know all about her.
From the comfort of my home in Iowa I have been watching RAN Sailing for almost 8 years now. This family has brought so much to me. It was my good fortune to find them. Go RAN go. The sailboat is beautiful.
Thanks for watching for so long! 😀
Good to see Vera helping. She brings back lots of memories for me with my girls at her age wanting to help. I had to laugh at her sanding, that didn't last long but they are fun to have around. Cheers Ian
Vera is the best. I’m glad that you are teaching her not to be afraid of worms and toads. I like Vera helps dad.
That view of the hull looking into the barn through the open doors -- wow! That hull is a work of art!
Thanks! 😊
Your attention to the smallest detail is unmatched. 👏
Thanks for sharing.
Fascinating details and attention to so many variables. Vera is growing so fast and is a beautiful little girl. As I've stated several times, I am in awe of your perfect, native speaking English and how you explain the process using difficult technical terms in the English language.
Guess I have to wait till next Friday for my favorite show. But you both deserve a week or two off. The three of you are incredible
It was really sweet seeing Vera working with Johan at the end. When she started sanding and 10 seconds later, she’s drawing, and then she’s sliding her whole body down the sheet of plywood to put the guide strips on, that was cute.
My goodness Vera has had another growth spurt since Easter. What a lovely lady!
It is wonderful to see you encouraging Vera to explore the creatures in your environment, without fear, but with her natural curiosity.
Consider building an enclosed box onto the keel template and not just plywood sides. An enclosed box will ensure torsional (twisting) rigidity. :)
Nothing better than daddys helper in the shop. I sure do miss those days with my daughter's.
Vera: '(boat) Finished' ❤
A beautiful hull. So nicely done. Thank you Vera, I have never seen a Swedish toad before!
Unbelievebal, that one day little Vera will be the chief skipper on board Ran III, giving sailing commands to her parents. :D
Is there nothing Johan to which Johan cannot turn his hand!? Amazingly skilled man!
Vera is the best. I’m glad that you are teaching her not to be afraid of worms and toads. 🐸
Thank You Guys, I really enjoy your movies, and seeing your build progress. I look forward to 7pm each Friday, suppa-tae in hand, for my weekly fix. Please keep up the good work………Ray in Dublin
Hi, Ray! Not the only Irishman happy to be watching this channel!
😅 Awesome! He said the word joint again! I would watch these videos only for that.
😂
It's a good job that you have Vera helping you out otherwise you would have been way behind. The best template you are using on your boat is the parenting one. The two of you are great parents. Keep up the good work. All the best from Wales/UK. 😀
Vera getting into the boat build is adorable. Great work she is coming to life episode by episode. Greg 🇬🇧
Vera reminds me of my boys on jobsites. Husb and I were general contractors, and my sons started out loading 2x4s on the framed floor at 5 cents ea. By the time they were 5 and 8 years, they were helping to pour and finish foundations and pads. As teenagers, they were fairly proficient at elec, plumbing, roofing, framing, siding and more. Neither is a builder; one a machinist and the other a heavy equip mechanic. But, both built their own houses. Vera can learn skills that will help her for a lifetime.
A suggestion for your keel pocket template. You could add a baton or 2 on the upper surface to stiffen the final composite shape. Wouldn’t add too much weight but would make the cross section a bit thicker and help maintain the curved shape.
Great work and thanks for sharing your project.
Toad Break - haha! Vera is so cute, wanting to help out, and very curious.
The work you've done so far, is amazing. Great job.
Your hard work and attention to detail makes many Proud 👏 .
Thanks for the Great Videos 🎉
Oh my lord. Vera is just growing up so fast. Watching her grow is like watching my grandgirls., So sweet and funny and precious and way too fast. Sadly, you realize this when you are old just how quickly the time goes by. Hopefully the same growing speed will also work on your vines. They look very good!
👍🏻❤😂 TOAD BREAK❗️👍🏻
She's a good girl! You two must be proud! 😺
of all the sailboats being built on the Net, I believe this one is the best in use of current technology and workmanship. Fairing a hull is no simple matter. This one looks great, My shoulder ache just watching.
Right now Johan is as strong and muscular as he's ever going to be. I can't imagine a more grueling workout than sanding/planing a ship for 500 hours
I would enter a psychosis after 12 hours
I love how Vera is so eager to help! 🤗💞
The hull looks so good!! I am getting so excited, I cant wait to see her upright!! Then, to me the really fun part begins!!
God bless you Johan. You will look back at all this effort years from now and wonder where you found the stamina and endurance.
Vera made the episode this week. Helping daddy with the boat project. I enjoy her thoughts and interactions with Johan. Malin the raspberries will be a nice treat when they produce. Wishing you all a great week!
You are wonderful parents.
Remarkable work on the cradle box, Johan. I do remember seeing you using that guide-tape process to line up your cuts, but I still find the function of the calibrator incomprehensible -- the geometry of just how it works. You are an extraordinary carpenter! I did chuckle along with everyone else watching this video to see you present Vera's "toad break". You and Malin are wonderful parents.
watching your constant progress is very cool, thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Vera is such a great helper!!
What a great helper Vera is! She's also getting so tall. Another wonderful update and progress. ☺
Man, that hull looks good. All your faring work has paid off. Good luck, I'm enjoying watching your huge project.
Hello. I watch your patience, love and enthusiasm with which you continue to build your ship. I'm looking forward to finally being on the water! Crossing fingers! To all of you🤞❤
Agreed, the strong back added to the template is the perfect solution and scribing it from the hull is the perfect practice.
Excellent video especially of Vera growing quickly!
living the dream vicariously through youtube. Happy Friday.
It is so nice to see Vera included in all your doings. That way she will learn and learn and learn w/o feeling any effort. A wonderful way into life.
That smooth snd shiny hull 👌
A few injections of air along the edge of a template like that can really help pop it loose without resorting to prying. You got it done so your good to go now.
What a great Team / Family everything about RAN's amazing project is to like ! Vera helping Mom & Dad has to be the cutiest she's going to be an amazing person with parents like you .
Exceptional Work and OUTSTANDING Music choice...Vera is Adorable!!!!! what a Great Helper!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏😍😍😍😍
I loved your garden section of the show. You did a great job!! And Vera was looking so cute and growing up fast. Great job editing. Loved it all, thank you so much.
Vera is getting so big. Dads helper it seams. Thanks and best wishes to you all.
Vera's a good helper, I noticed the part where she operated the camera in the lumber yard!
Talent and persistence and patience a good combination...
Vera is more and more great help😅
What a nice helping daugther you have❤
Wow ,that Alaskan baby is getting to be quite the helper
Admiring your perseverance, technical attention to details, your overall mindset on the work you do yourself, and thorougly learning the shipbuilding craftsmanship without taking shortcuts. Amazing effort!
I only comment every once in a while on videos. Your daughter is adorable in the way she helps you in the garden. Anyway, she was helping your husband I couldn't believe it. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing she's so cute. She grabs the sandpaper and starts sanding. And the way she helped with the plywood in the lumber yard.
Worms for Papa 😊 and Toads too!! Precious 😊
Vera is the best helper! What kind of toad is Toad? Love her adventurous spirit.
As usual top job. To stiffen the keel template, you could use styrophene strips/runners on edge, like strakes, fibreglassed in situ to the template you have. Stiffen in place instead of the plywood. All the best
Lovely episode, and nice to see you getting plenty of assistance from your little helper. Raspberries are my favourite fruit for making pies..
Thanks for the upload. Take care...
I like the way you anticipate how the parts will behave during the different production steps and how you come up with decisions, what to do. The thought about the Kerl pocket and the vacuum is brilliant.
Looking forward to your interior build.
Yes, can’t wait for the kitchen cabinets!
Maybe have Vera help with the Shapeoko alignment scan as well as the tape? Easy enough to redo it if she goes too crazy. But, the slow reveal of the plywood on the little screen might be a way to show her why her father has spent all this time going over all of those surfaces.
The hull looks great. That keel is going to come out excellent. Waiting to see you roll her over.
This is a very interesting project. You are doing a great job.
Vacuum bagging only exerts force between the two layers of the bag. It shouldn't deform what it's resting on since the hull won't be in the bag. A vacuum doesn't make the bag magically heavier.
Thats right of corse
Yes of course, that goes without saying, but there’s other variables at play when using vacuum on a thin laminate. Cheers!
Saknar er - hoppas att allt är ok
Missed you yesterday!
Spring time in Sweden is an inspiration to us all.
From a lifetime of glass work I always leave an article a min of 48 hours or more there is curing contractions for a. Long time. No rush.
VERA is the best helper.
Thankyou👍 coming on really well now😀
I would not use plywood to stiffen the template; wood changes it’s dimensions when humidity changes, and when coupled with glassfibre that does not, the curvature of the whole piece changes. I’d glue a thick styrofoam plate vertically on the templete and laminate glass over it.
Excited for you growing your own foods!
Beautiful looking boat from the front even if it is upside down!
Could use the extra strips of foam to create beams running the length and glass those in. Should be strong enough to hold its form.
With a 3D laser scanner you get a very precise model of your keel pocket. Have a look if you can rent one in your neighborhood.
Gosh your both doing a wonderful job on building your new boat. It’s looking great
Wow, looking at the hull from the end with the doors open outlines the beauty of the work that you have accomplished.
Thank you for sharing this, you’re both so inspirational!
packing tape is a brilliant release agent. the only drawback would be, imo, that it might take a bit of time to apply specially if you dont want any defects like the ridges it can create if you would applying it quickly, if you dont mind any of those "scratches" let say, then tape is the way to go, cheap and easy
Good call with the stiffening web on the template. You might consider fitting two with a few cross braces. If you make all the upper edges level and flat the template will sit true when placed on a flat floor, this might help your fabricator make a good fitting keel plate. 👍
Nice job guys looks good...😊
Cheers guys! 😊. Nice work Vera!
The amount of possible warping due to vacuum, is less than the shrinkage and warping due to any exothermic reaction in the subsequent hardening.
Anyway, the keel will (hopefully) be bedded in bedding compound, eradicating or ignoring any warping/shrinkage of the vacuum/exothermic reaction.
IE: You can't make it perfect, so stop trying. Get is at good as it can get, with what you got - and move on!
you have the Little one trained well !!
Hi, small correction. Vacuum actually does cause much less deformation of the hull than using weights. By evacuating the area under the keel template you end up with 1 atmospheric pressure pressing down on it but also 1 atmospheric pressure pressing from the inside of the hull. So in the end you are clamping it equally from both sides and produce no deformation. While when you use weight you are pressing much more from the top then from the inside of the hull and create quite a deformation.
Teacher than a builder !!!😂
I wonder if you can ask the machine shop to cut the keel plate out of wood/plywood first to see if it matches the pocket and then make adjustments if needed, before cutting it out of steel. Just to lower the cost of a mistake. I guess you'd need some back ribs on that wooden part as well, just like the ones you plan to glue onto styrofoam.
Looking at how you're building it, for the most part, single-handedly is nothing short of a feat. Really impressive!
What a sight to see! Who would have thought that one day a large sailboat would find it's way out of this barn???
