Saw is a Dewalt 18 Volt. Manifold Tee is 1" Slip X Slip X MIPT Thread. Slip Tee is 1" PVC Slip X Slip X Slip. No pipe dope on valve connections because the Rain Bird 100DVFUU valve has O-rings on the valve that seal when the nut on the valve is tightened.
Your galvanized pipe probably has flat spots that won't allow the dresser coupling to work. I would try and thread the pipe end. This is one of the problems of galvanized pipe, the older it gets the harder to work on it is.

I've seen galvanized pipe so bad that it gets almost paper thin and you can't even thread it. At this point you have to bite the bullet and replace it. I hope your pipe isn't that far gone.

Thanks for the video. I have a somewhat small manual sprinkler system with three individual valves to turn. Can you estimate what you think a fair price would be for me to have someone install an automatic unit on the timer? I live in the Los Angeles area.

Hard to estimate without seeing what you have. Conversion valves run $30-40 each. Often the tricky part is getting a timer wire from the conversion valves to the timer. Also you would need 3 open stations at the timer. I would get a couple of estimates from sprinkler contractors in your area.

I know this video is old, but how much does a cost to hire out for a job like this?

A guess would be 50-75 dollars.

how old were the old valves?

I would guess the manual valves were installed in the 1960s or 1970s.
