After watching your videos I can't help but think that becoming a financial controller is much easier in Europe than in America. Well, at least in my country. I have seen 25 year olds becoming junior financial controllers in some smaller companies after only working as an auditor in big 4 for maybe ~4 years.

    Hey Bill,
I work in accounts payable right now, but I do not want to be stuck here forever. What actions can I take to move up the ladder? Degrees? Other positions?

First step get a bachelors degree in accounting . With a Bach you can get get entry to staff accountant position. It is the first professional accounting position . Yeah climbs to Staff 2 ,and senior , asst cont and then controller etc. I would recommend getting your masters to complete 150 credit hours and become eligible to sit for the CPA exam . Don’t go for certificate of accounting or something like that . The only way to become a competent accountant is to understand and have. Solid foundation of GAAP . Generally accepted accounting principles. If you do get go for your masters I recommend taking courses in taxation . Knowing both makes you a solid accountant with a lot of potential .

I was a senior accountant but I hadn't had much forecasting/budgeting experience so I am getting a Financial Analyst role (focusing on budgeting and forecasting) probably next week, am I going backwards according to your metric? or am I still on the right track to be a finance manager in a couple of years?
