Ketchy Shuby is a cricket game we played as kids where there is one batsman one bowler and every fielder plays to get the ball with a chance of bowling, with the intention of bowling out the batsman and getting a chance to bat. It was a popular game at recess for us in primary school where there is one bat, one ball and as many kids playing together. We played this well before Peter Tosh's song was released. Your friends as boys could call you to say, "we going to the ball grung to go play some Ketchy Shuby." This was Westmoreland, mid sixties to early seventies for me. Remember Peter Tosh was from Westmoreland, so he would be familiar with the term from there.
I can understand some people not familiar with the term from way back then may consider it to have a sexual connotation. Ketchy Shuby was released in 1976 on Tosh's Legalize It album, so it came popularized into the vernacular nationally then. But before that, I knew the term from our boyhood cricket game which allowed as many players to participate at one time.

This is so interesting.. this is only my observation that the two pictures used to illustrate the teggereg are vastly different- the second black and white picture with the female screaming her jugulars while the other color picture illustrates 3 people having a casual conversation. Thank you for this channel. My daughter who is born in the US is absolutely fascinated with the language - I enjoy watching you

‘Sugar’ - diabetes: simple medical origin of the term: uncontrolled blood sugar levels, often (not always) from overconsumption of carbohydrates; broken down as glucose/ sugar in the body via digestion.

Hooligan and helter-skelter were originally British, I believe, but are now used elsewhere.
It appears that some of these expressions are regional
The older Jamaicans from Kingston use to say "blouse and skirt!" indicating surprise or shock at something, usually good.
"Back-a-wall woman" is an argumentative woman who curses, drinks and will fight in the streets (maybe from the word Bacchanal.
You would shrug your shoulder and say "Cho!!" meaning get off me, or to express impatience ( 😄my mum's favorite).

Permit me to comment again on ‘Gumption’. This too is an English word, though used informally. Meaning: shrewd; spirited initiative/ resourcefulness.

Kakka faat is a kind of metaphor/ onomatopoeia. In the Jamaican lingo context, it is describing the sound of the sudden(uncontrolled) emission of wind through the ‘back exit of the body’ - aka kakka). The term alludes to both the sound and suddenness/ spontaneity of the action.

‘Trenton’, Jamaican pseudonym for pig originated from the ; (now rarely used) English word ‘trencherman’ meaning pig- hog. Also used to describe an over eater / glutton.

Catch it bowl it meaning its not an organised game of cricket once you have the ball you bowl to get the single batsman out to replace him at the batting crease...
Downside of it older boys would pressure a younger boy if he got the ball but would not share the bat...
Positive it developed great bowlers especially pacemen as you had to earn your place at the batting crease..

Pyah-Pyah refers to much more that "class or status"
It refers to a person or object of high quality or pedigree
For example, someones clothes or dress can be said to be made from "no pyah-pyah" material.

Helter Skelter is an authentic English term; not uniquely Jamaican. It means disorder or disorderly haste but has more to do with state of mind or behaviour- in a word, confusion- doing things in a disorderly/ confused way or in a confused state of mind.

How I understand it, it's like running around like a chicken without a head.

Funny, kitchen subie was always use in a disorganized cricket game. If get the ball you bowl. If you get the batter out you bat, if the batter hit the ball and you catch it, he is out, you get to bat.we sometimes work in pairs so my partner can bat. If the bowler is good we would switch to the partner who is the better batter. Don't ask me how all of that becomes kitchen shubie

Ketchy shuby refers to a fun game of cricket where each individual is on his own during the course of the game. It is not a team game, as each individual represents himself.
One person is batting and another person bowls "(shub = shove =toss =fling)" the ball to him. He hits the ball and I catch "(ketch)" the ball. Now I have possession of the ball and I will now "shub" the ball to the batsman to get him out, so that I can get my chance to bat.
So the irony of the whole thing is to ketch the ball and shub it to get out the batsman. (Ketchy = catch it and shuby=shove it = bowl it)
