    Great safety tips. One other one I didn’t see was to adjust the height of the blade to only cut the thickness of the material thus saving the blade wear.

    Your safety tips are good as gold. Especially because you don't just tell what to avoid, but you present a solution for very typical situations.
    One little bonus tip, that works wonders: Make your work bench heavy. It will stand more stable, it will not wander off when pushing with the circular saw. Even folding work stands can be weighed down with some bricks on a board.

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Shane, one of the best things I ever did when it came to a circular saw was buy a 165mm 18v Makita. The smaller size does about 80% of what my 235mm Hitachi saw would do, so I only need that on special occasions. But the best thing about the 18v cordless, is the brake on it. Release the trigger and the saw stops in only a few seconds, and it has the added benefit of no cord, which means no tripping hazard and no fluffing around with the cord accidentally getting caught.
    Just my 2 cents

      I just bought the DeWalt Atomic series 4 1/2" 20V saw. Because of where I am and the light cutting I do it's much more practical than my standard 7 1/4" circ.

    • @SoldattoHD
      @SoldattoHD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the brake also stops it from kicking back as it stops when the pressure gets too high

  • @rey11able
    @rey11able ปีที่แล้ว +85

    Perfect for small projects. Not got a lot of power so if the wood starts to flex it stops the saw pretty easy. Use it for small tasks and you will be happy. Safety system Works great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c .lose your grip on the saw it shuts off and the sheath closes over exposed saw.

    Thanks for this important video. Not only for newbies like myself, but also as a wake up/freshen up video for all the experienced people who might even be more at risk than us ‘still a bit intimidated starters’.
    Because inattention is always just around the corner…
    There are SO many videos online with ‘hacks’ and stuff and all to often I see people with their fingers RIGHT NEXT to the spinning blade!!

    Wise advice and funny as always. This is a great reference for circs. One of the clearest remaining memories from my childhood is my dad coming close to taking his arm off with a circular saw. Early 90s, im out the backyard with him and hes cutting on saw horses, it kicks back and he gets a scratch from one end of his forearm to the other. He said some words, put the saw down, sat down and chain smoked while staring at the ground/sky/ his arm!! *Cue The Wonder Years opening credits*

    thanks for the advice! Just made some safe cuts for some fence boards today that folks were gonna charge $2k for 😂
    Electrical eng here with electricians apprentice training so lmk if you ever have any electrical questions!
    also -- one thing that I learned on my first cut today was to run the saw a few inches past the end of the piece, if the guard is set to make a minimum depth cut. I stopped before going a couple inches past the end of the board (given my view from above) and the cut wasn't perfect as it left a tiny chip at the end which I had to flake off.

I probably did all the things you said not to do and I'm amazed I didn't end up hurting myself. Such a great video. There's a lot I didn't know there and you may have saved me an accident. It seems that so far I've been extremely lucky. When cutting sheet material I've been using polystyrene sheet behind it and cutting it on the floor. And on normal lengths of wood I've only had to cut end pieces, so only support one side. I can now see why this has stopped things from binding on me. If I didn't have polystyrene sheets to hand for sheet material, or if I needed to cut a piece of wood in the middle then I may have done the ways that you showed me can cause binding.
    BTW I do like your celebratory jazz "SKI-BOP". I do this occasionally at home and my wife hates it 😄

    This video came across my feed at the perfect time as I'm finding that I've been using my circular saw more often. As a beginner, this is life saving information. e.g I did not know about the clamping situation as my dad always just did the yoga poses to hold things down so that's where I learned. Gotta go buy some clamps. What's a good size clamp to get for a beginner that would be good for most household applications?

It's powerful enough to get the job done, but very easy to mandarin control of at all times, even in sketchy situations. And the blade stops very quickly upon release of the trigger.
