Our Dentist Said There is NOTHING He Can Do for Our Autistic Daughter's Teeth | Ep 3

  • Hey Gentle Fam!
    In short, Dr. Johnson said there was nothing that could be done with Mikko at this point because she uses her thumb to self soothe and her mental heath is more important. As a parent, there will be things we miss and have to compromise in life. He did suggest that as she grows with more understanding, we help her find other methods to self-regulate her emotions, as it is a different battle with an Autistic child.
    What we do know is that braces can fix her teeth when she is the appropriate age.
    We’d like to thank you for voicing your concerns about Mikko's teeth, as we have shared the same concerns, and wanted to share with you all what we are doing to help her. Hope you enjoy the video and if you have any questions make sure to comment them below.

    Awesome dentist! Hang in there y'all. My 16 year old niece is non-verbal autistic. (She's also my goddaughter.🥰) Between just regular old genetics, thumb-sucking and tongue thrusting, her teeth were severe. Obviously because of her autism the logistics of getting braces was a nightmare. Her parents actually had several Orthodontists refuse to take her on as a patient unless they agreed to HIGHLY sedate her for every visit. (My niece obviously has her issues but a calm, patient and gentle approach with her has always worked.)
    Anyhoo, they had been turned away by so many orthodontists that they had resigned to the thought that my poor niece was going to have to just live with her dental situation. I live out of state from them but I'm a nurse and was adamant about her getting proper dental procedures and treatment. I mean, her teeth were SEVERELY misaligned and not only did she have an overbite, she had a severe crossbite. It was starting to affect her quality of life. Plus, dental health is so important to overall body health.
    After a crap-ton of research, we finally found an orthodontist who specializes with neurodivergent kiddos. They have to drive about 80 minutes to the Orthodontists but it's worth it. My niece's dental health has improved tremendously and she's got a million dollar smile now. She goes back next month for a visit and if everything goes as planned, the braces get to come off. 😁😎(She's had them on since late 2020!) Just in time for her first Junior Prom in the Spring.🥰💃👸

    This dentist was definitely spot on. I used to work in a homeless shelter so a lot of the two and three year olds had very poor hygiene due to neglect. There's a real issue that comes into play when milk, juice, etc. sit on teeth. Also I used to suck my thumb, so I had the retainer/thumb pricker thing installed in the roof of my mouth. TOTALLY PAIN AND TRAUMA FREE. From what I remember the thumb sucking was resolved so quickly, and never needed braces afterward. I got the retainer installed around 2nd grade and completely stopped sucking my thumb by 3rd grade after sucking my thumb for YEARS. So for me this solution was very effective. Also I had loads of cavities as a child from not flossing and brushing effectively. SO PARENTS check on your kids, help them out, go over what they did and save some money on medical bills. I got my first root canal around age 12/13 and my second one about ten years later. I made so mistakes with my teeth as a young person and now I try my best to inform others not to make the same mistake.

      Thanks for the info. I have a 3month old that uses a binky. And women are arguing with me on Facebook about her teeth and speech being messed up due to it. She has no teeth yet and also she breastfeeds. I would rather let her use the binky verses her hands. But I will be more aware of the food residue on her teeth as she gets older.

    • @b_isfor_bethany
      @b_isfor_bethany ปีที่แล้ว +7

      12:41 You have a similar story to me regarding thumb sucking. I sucked my thumb since birth. My mother said she tried to get me to use a pacifier, but I never would take it. I liked my thumb. So my parents had the thumb pricker retainer put on about second grade as well. Within six months, the habit was broken. And I didn’t need braces when all on my adult teeth came in. I did eventually get braces in my early 20s. That was due to my wisdom teeth. They were impacted and pushed all my teeth forwards since my teeth are really close together anyway. So if your teeth are close together, it is very important to floss. I know firsthand. No matter how annoying it is.

    • @taleyajohnson1867
      @taleyajohnson1867 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@b_isfor_bethany absolutely. My teeth are so close together and that always gave me problems are far as cavities but my brothers not so much because they have more gaps

    • @K.Mac.
      @K.Mac. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same device in my mouth. I sucked my thumb until 4th grade then got the retainer and stopped within about 6 months. My mom had tried everything from hot sauce to tape to hot peppers...nothing stopped me until that darn retainer. Luckily I never had to have braces & am in my 40s now. I never met another person who knew what I was talking about when I would describe the retainer. This is my first time hearing or seeing someone else talk about it. Definitely worked!

    I am a 32 year Old Autistic Adult and I Understand I Self Soothe this may sound weird but my Dentist had me use a Binkie when I was younger because it wouldn't have the same effect on my teeth well my teeth are fine now and I still use self soothing Binkie only in my home when I need a sensory break or at night or bedtime I know I will get hate for this but it helps rather than pinching or hurting myself

    My son was miserable from sucking his thumb up to the age of ten. He couldn’t spend the night at friends houses because he would suck his thumb in his sleep. We tried everything to help him stop, because he wanted to but finally opted to get him the thing attached to his upper teeth so he couldn’t suck his thumb. He was pretty stressed at first, like he had a hard time sleeping for a couple nights but within a week he was totally broken of it and so happy. Best thing for him.

    My daughter is 32; 33 this December. She has always soothed with her thumb. People would tell me I should MAKE her stop sucking it. I knew I would NEVER make her stop or ask her, to. As she got older she cut down on the sucking to only stressful situations and tiredness. These days I rarely see her suck it but she will if she needs to. BTW, she got braces at 12 or 13, it was so long ago I don't really remember. She didn't mind the braces. She had them for about 3.5 years. She has beautiful teeth but she could care less! LOL. I am so happy I encouraged her to suck her thumb if she needs it. If that's the worst thing she could pick to deal with her life than more power to her. Please don't take that away from Mikko. She may taper off or stop on her own. And if she doesn't.....so what. Life is to short to sweat the small stuff! Good luck with that and it will be interesting to see where that journey takes you.

    My autistic son used to suck his thumb and rub a towel. He had special soft towels. One night (while he was asleep) I threw them out. He was non verbal then so he couldn’t ask for them but I saw him looking. It didn’t feel right to him to suck his finger without his special towels so he stopped cold turkey. His teeth are already damaged tho so braces will be coming when he’s around 13. I wish I had a dentist for my son like Dr. Johnny 😢 he seems very patient and nice.

    You have such a beautiful family. I love your videos and the way you share your life experiences with everyone. You have taught me a lot about raising a child with autism. Thank you so much and I pray nothing but the best for you and your family God bless ❤️

    My daughter sucked her thumb and her dentist made an appliance for her upper mouth. It was like a retainer made of metal she couldn’t suck her thumb and it straightened her teeth. She had it in for a few months and it was the best things we could’ve done to correct her teeth.

    Mikko is wonderful. She is a great 2 yr old. My autistic child at that age was way different because I didn't know he was autistic and was always trying to get him better with his communication. She did better than the average 2yr old. She live those glasses.

    I brush my son's teeth as I KNOW he's not getting everything. I'm a stress case about not having the money to fix things my parents fixed for me. My parents spent a TON on my teeth. I'm so lucky. But, not endowed with the same insurance.
