It’s a lie though. He didn’t complete this feat in 48 hours. I saw him on my flight from ABQ to Atlanta. He pieced together the driving portion from another video to make it look like he faced adversity. Pretty lame
been here since the beginning mike--you genuinely have one of the most entertaining channels for a transit nerd like i am, but the fact that you can also appeal to a wider audience with your videos i think is your real talent. keep it up bro!
I used to live in Palm Springs. I did the tram once in the 2000s. For those of you who are thinking of taking the tram, there is a nice visitor center at the top with a couple of restaurants and a bar. A nice place to go and enjoy the views of the valley below.
Thank you for the nod to “Reasonably wheelchair accessible” that was awesome! I am so thankful for your channel because you are taking me through video to places I will never get to see because of being in a wheelchair. This tram ride I could do!!! Keep up the amazing work.
@0:44 me and my grandparents had to be helicopter lifted off the palm springs tram when I was young. I believe it was in the late 80tys we went for a day trip to the tram we made it halfway up and got stuck because of a flash flood at the base. I don't know why it stopped the trams going up but the local search and rescue had to send out a helicopter to save our butts that were stuck on the put side...
Brilliant video, as always. I've only done the Palm Springs one about ten years ago on a road trip but the thing that excited me most was seeing chipmonks for the first time at the top. I'm British and a wildlife nut so the Americans couldn't understand why I was so overjoyed at seeing their cute pest. I'll never forget.
@@boston_octopus they're also kinda dumb. They'll run out in front of a car, with a minimal amount of time to even recognize them. I've ended a few chipmunks that way. 🙁
Love this video - I was in the original TWA building in 1974 and it was beautiful then as it is 😮 a hotel today. Brought back a lot of memories to see it as I was with my 3 small children flying to Tunisia to see my husband after being separated for one year as he was on a 1 year unassigned military assignment.
I used to ride the Roosevelt tram when I lived in NY. I did not realize its history. Thank you Mike - this is one of reasons I watch your videos. Love from Israel.
My mom and grandpa used to hike from the bottom of the Sandia tram to the second tower. They would go almost every day before his health started to go downhill. I live close to the tram and it's fun to watch it go up and down. Also, one of the buildings at the top you could have gotten some food from which is really cool.
Mike! I do hope that you know (and now you will) how much pleasure you give to us your subscribers. This post is very unique! I live only across the river from NYC in Union County, NJ. I have never used the Roosevelt Island (pronounced “rose” like the flower by the way), now I will mosey over and cross off another bucket list item. You inspire me! Thank you!🚠
I was visiting Albuquerque for the first time in late 2021, and while driving around I saw a billboard for the Sandia Tramway and decided to stop by. Spectacular ride and the views were stunning, but you need to stay hydrated if you aren't used to the elevation (like me) or you can get a headache almost immediately once you reach the summit. There was even one brave soul who had brought his parachute to the top then proceeded to float down (base jumping). Pretty cool to see.
It’s been a while since I commented, Mike, but I need to tell you how wonderful this and every episode is! Love your enthusiasm and creativity! Each episode is a fun and entertaining adventure!
Itching to see your take on the Space Needle elevator next week. That was part of my honeymoon experience nearly 45 years ago. It's still a great ride today! Loved seeing 5he Roosevelt Island tram. Never Never rode it, but saw it from the 59th street bridge when we were in New York for our 2nd anniversary. You're bringing back the memories!
In the summer you should go to the Cannon mountain tramway in New Hampshire. It's the 1st in the Us, built in 1938. Plus you can see Canada and if you visit the ski museum nextdoor you can stand in an original tramcar. We've had a fantastic time enjoying your channel and sharing it with our kids.
Mike , Thank you I grew up in New Joisey, as they say: But never rode the Roosevelt Tram, now I'm in Ferndale,Wa., right around the corner, so to speak, from Vancouver, an awesome city. You've got to stop and smell the roses my frantic friend.😁 Cheers, Rik
Hi Mike. Well I learnt something today. For me, a tram runs on the ground, with tracks for it's wheels.... Not through the air !🤣 Transport that go through the air, I have called gondolas, chairlifts, or skylifts ! So thanks for opening my eyes and brain, to this new term
I didn’t know that there was a state park at the top of the Palm Springs Tram. I just cared about the temperature difference. It was 120 degrees F in Palm Springs at the time and (I think) less than 70F at the top. Possible to breath without scorching your lungs.
It was worth watching Mike to answer your question. I am not a heights person, so I'm glad it was you up there and not me. I'll do the trains, but not aerial trams. Keep up the great videos and content.
Glad you did the Sandia team! Folks should know that it closes in wind....so call first! How did you like Albuquerque airport? Your shows are so creative....it's a treat in my day!
I only rode the Roosevelt Island Tramway once, and it happened to be on the day of the NYC Marathon. We could see the runners on the adjacent Queensboro Bridge. The views are certainly better than in the subway, but you still have to transfer to a subway or bus to go anyplace beyond E. 59 St. That balloon ride was scary, out in the open air with just a waist-high railing to keep you in the basket. Great scenery throughout your travels - thanks.
How did I not know there was a tram in NYC??? Legit had no clue that even existed. Excited to see the next episode. I saw some modular thing with WV on the side and as WV native, its going to be cool to see you there. Also saw something going up the side of a mountain that looked suspiciously familiar, maybe from my days in Pittsburgh in the 90s?
Then i take it you never went to Universal Orlando in the 1990s and rode "Kongfrontation", as the first generation of the tram was the attraction's ride vehicle. th-cam.com/video/unPekMefhig/w-d-xo.html
Hello! Up north in Rochester, we were expecting a lot of snow, only to get a minimum amount. Boulder got something of snow. They have a reason to prepare, buuuut, it rarely happens the way humans expected it to. I'm glad you made your trip in the 48 hours though!
Loved the views from the trams and the balloon! I never knew about the TWA hotel. I see a trip to NYC to stay there and check out the tram. Mike, thanks for bringing us along.
So glad you went to the TWA Hotel! I spent a lot of time there in the 60s and 70 when it was an active terminal and I was a little kid. I remember literally running (as little kids are prone to do) through those arched tunnel concourse connectors having the time of my life knowing I was going someplace awesome. My dad flew for TWA back in the day when family members could fly for free, and we departed that terminal many times for some epic trips! Thanks for the memories Mike!
Love seeing the PS tram in a video! I went on the old cars when I was a kid in the 90s, and ob the new ones several years ago. It’s time to get back. Fun fact to, the PCT goes right by up there too..
WOW! Hot air balloon is something I want to ride in, even at 68. Loving this series. I have been on the old tram in Palm Springs, many years ago. Went on the tram in Christchurch New Zealand.... might be a bit far for a quick jaunt Mike!
Your videos are always so amazing. The places you go, stunning quality , simple brilliant transitions, your personality, the dash of history. Bravo keep it up!!! It's good to see you happily enjoying your life! Not to mention letting us learn and live through you.
Wow! Lot's of variety here! I had no idea that Palm Springs California had an aerial tram to a mountain park, nor was I aware of one in Albuquerque. I was aware of the Roosevelt Island one but never got to ride it when I was there in 1995. And the TWA Hotel at JFK - Wow! My airport visit was at Newark, NJ, so I missed out there. You certainly know how to entertain us from week to week. Oh, and I noticed during your Surfshark promotion that you can access information about my hometown Melbourne. And I see you could be in Seattle for next weeks video - Could be a sneak preview of Melbourne's historic tram as they operate along the waterfront adjacent to the BNSF rail corridor (Yes, I do have a photo amongst my collection of a Melbourne tram beside Amtrak's Empire Builder taken back in 1989). Looking forward to seeing what surprises you have in store for us next. Cheers from Michael.😀
In the 1960’s my dad worked for TIA, Trans International Airlines in Oakland. TWA, aka Tinny Weenie Airlines was next door. My dad had many friends who worked at TWA. He was impressed with the TWA Hotel you shared. Thanks!
I've been in the trams at Jackson Hole in Wyoming (the original and the new one) and Snowbird in Utah, both during ski season. Of course they were crammed with skiers at the time, so if one was not lucky enough to be by the windows the views were just of what kinds of skis and jackets other people had.
I've ridden the other commuter aerial tramway you referred to, the tram in Portland, Oregon up to the Oregon Health and Science University. I rode it as a tourist for the views but since the lower station is right next to a light rail station and the lower campus of OHSU, it's a great way for patients, visitors, staff, and students to get up the hill.
We rode the Portland tram as tourists, too - was hoping it might be in this video! The public transit in Portland was great and the tram was a fun ride, but it was so cool that some people were actually taking it to work!
I love this. We New Yorkers just consider the tramway as part of the transit system. The TWA Hotel is fab. In the 80s I did many shows for I❤NY tourism and TWA was the partner airline. We "sold" NY travel to foreign travel agents. I flew many times from this terminal. Thanks, Mike for this and everything you do.
I rode the NYC tram a couple of years ago. We rode it over during the day, then came back at night. Amazing views! I can't lie though, that moment when you look down and realize you are above the bridge, it can be a little scary. Still, a great experience that I would do again if I am ever in NYC. Thanks for the video.
Ahh! I just rode the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in February! We did it at night and goodness WHAT an experience. The overview effect is real looking down at the Coachella Valley.
I rode the Palm Springs tramway in I believe 1989 for a school field trip. Definitely need to do it again. Also the Palm Springs airport is the best! Definitely a different feel.
The last time I rode the tram in Palm Springs, it was the old cars, back in the mid 1990's. What a difference now. By the way, you can take a great balloon ride in Palm Springs too. When I did it, we soared over "date palm" orchards just a few feet above the trees. It was a Champagne breakfast flight...epic! Nice job as usual Michael. Thanks for taking us along.
Well, that certainly was something different!! Being an Australian our highest mountain come no where near the height you climbed. I don't know that I would like to travel on one of those now that I am in my 70s as I seem to have become a little less adventurous than I was in my youth. Height was never an issue back then but just climbing onto the bottom step of a ladder makes me feel dizzy these days. So enjoy it while you are still young & agile. I had never heard that New York had an aerial tram but it would be popular when trying to move around a very busy city. We used to have a monorail in Sydney but they pulled it down & now we just have the light rail. (Modern trams) & as I am a lover of train travel especially the old steam train travel, then I enjoyed the light rail when I used to go into the city. Looking forward to your next adventures which I enjoy watching on Sunday afternoons.
Consider Eureka, CA and Northern coastal California. Redwoods Skywalk. Madaket harbor cruise. Kayak in Trinidad, CA, and the SkyTrail at Trees of Mystery.
I was in Palm Springs in December of 2016 and we thought about doing the tram but, it was pretty cold so we opted not to. Never even thought about the Roosevelt Island tram before but, next visit to NYC it's on my list! Thanks for that!
I did not know that New York had a Tram. This has been fascinating! I rode a Tram out at South Park, at the Alleghany Fairgrounds. That was 52 years ago. It was known as a Skybus/People Mover. It was neat. Looking forward to next week.I hope you have a good week!
I live very close to Sandia Peak. That tram has been there forever! Moved to NM at the age of 2 in 2012 (11 years ago) and my first ride was almost a year later. The ski resort lost their scenic chairlift (Chair 1) in 2017 after problems like maintenance and part unavailability and stuff like that including the summit restaurant seen in many sections. The restaurant is in a new location from the old one. In the way of Chair 1's top terminal. The old one was out of the way of the top.. Chair 3 has the most lift towers in the world having 41. Not the most chairs (although it has 240). The ski area hasn't opened for 2 seasons straight now!
Thanks for doing this, the past 4 months I’ve been driving up and down the 10th passing Palm Springs through my windows. Somebody had told me about the tramway but never believed it. Thanks
Thanks for posting this! I happened to be in Albuquerque a few weeks after you posted this, and because of your video I rode the Sandia Peak Tramway. Totally worth it, I loved it, and I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for this video. Keep up the good work!
All of these aerial trams look awesome. I lived near NYC for 8 years and still have family up there yet I never visited Roosevelt Island. It's now on my list.
Hard to believe that you had never been to New Mexico. You must go back and ride the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama. It is truly a step back in time. Late September is the best time of year to go for crisp fall weather and beautiful colors in the trees. The docents are a treasure trove of wonderful information about the history of everything around you. Be sure to engage them.
Thanks for highlighting the beauty of Albuquerque! Your balloon launched right across the street from my house. Sandia Peak is a must-see, so I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Mike. I lOVE Albuquerque. It's a well kept secret. The Art Museum, the friendly people, the wineries, the food, the history, the historic central square and old town, the art, the diverse culture, the churches, the architecture, it's all so unique and it's in a beautiful spot geographically! I love the airport there too. It was the first time I saw fine art and live music in an airport! There's so much more to Albuquerque than Breaking Bad. Thanks for featuring this wonderful place.
Love the series. I have done everything featured in this series except the Roosevelt Tram in New York City! You're teaching me new places to visit and new things to do!!!
Awesome video as usual. Next time you’re in New York, please check out the transit museum in Brooklyn. It would make a great video. It has a Station underneath where you can walk on all the old subway trains dating back to the early 1900s.
Just a word on translation. In Europe an aerial tramway is a cable car. A tram in Europe is what you would call a streetcar . Different languages differ slightly in translation . Good channel you always earn a thumbs up .
This was so much fun, and the views were spectacular! I thought the NYC tram just went from one side of the river to the other. I didn't realize you go flying through NYC among the buildings!
😍 everything about your videos for both my couch and actual journeys. Your energy and positivity is exhilarating. Although I stayed in PSP to hike Joshua Tree, you have now inspired me to go back to ride the tramway and hike the trails at the top. Great choice of hotel at JFK too. It's so much fun! On a side note, also want to go to the PanAm Experience in Santa Clarita CA but it is still temporarily closed.
I've been on the Palm Springs one since I live only about 90 minutes away. What I didn't realize, as a recent survivor of a pulmonary embolism, the height up there is not conducive to even walking casually. But, it was super awesome! I'm not afraid of heights, so this was a whole bunch of fun....until I couldn't breathe. LOL The turning floor will take you by surprise. I have always wanted to take the hot air balloon ride experience. Maybe someday! New Mexico is beyond description, loved it!
Another awesome one. Loved your quote, "traveling for interesting things, makes for interesting travel." The trams are an awesome way to experience the journey. We want to stay at the TWA hotel too. It looks so awesome. Did you know the music video, "Way Less Sad," by AJR was shot there? We've been to NYC years ago and had no idea that there was an aerial tram. Can't wait for the next one. I love exploring and learning right along with you.
The Roosevelt Island Tram used to be like the one in New Mexico, when one left 2nd Avenue, the other left the island… until a bunch of faults and malfunctions left BOTH stranded over the river, which was a nightmare for the fire department’s rescue teams. Now they run independently with massive electric motors running the cables on the island side. The tram is good if something goes wrong on the subway, because there is a station on the island (which is technically car free, aside from maintenance and emergency vehicles, oh and the bus that goes around. There is a bridge into Queens that goes into a parking structure on the island, in case do you own a car and live there.
If you're around SW Colorado I highly recommend the Telluride Gondola. It's free. And there's a restaurant at the halfway point. And then a 4 wheel drive jeep tour of the mountains ⛰️ Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton too
Cool! I’ve done the Sandra Peak Tram, as well as a few others, especially if smaller Gondolas count. From Banff Sulphur Mountain, to Teton Village to a short one in St Thomas VI!
Another wonderful adventure Michael! Love the hot air balloon ride! Never been on one but would love to one day! That TWA Hotel was awesome! Thanks for taking us along on the breathtaking tram rides!
Great video, Mike. I've only ridden one tram in my life, that being the tram from Teton Village near Jackson Hole Wyoming to a mountain top for skiing down the Tetons. I went in the summer so it was just for the views. It was fun but I find trams to also be a little scary especially when you get close to a cliff face and lift you right over it.
Arial trams are such a unique experience - the funnest way to scale mountains and hills. I never knew about these arial trams until just now! Putting these on my travel list. I've always dreamed of having breakfast on one of those hot air balloons. Thanks Mike!
Look forward to all the videos, brother! You've become a part of my weekend routine. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventures! Cheers to safe travels!
Nothing better then watching a DownieLive video on a saturday morning
Morning? It's evening here in The Netherlands
Or in bed and going to sleep with a smile on my face.
Agreed

Lol @6:00 was literally warned he would fall on his ass 😂
As a citizen of North America’s southern country aka America. I love the way Downie reminds us of all that is good in the world.

It is beautiful up there we were up there before Covid. Worth the trip
When I was there it was 60 degrees at the bottom, then 30 degrees with 18 inches of snow at the top
Some of us enjoy the behind the scenes of traveling. I would love to see more of how you get to where your going. 🙂
Thanks Mike. I enjoyed riding the Sandia Peak Tramway some years ago for Sunset and Dinner in the restaurant at the top. Magnificent!

Gatlinburg Aerial Tram is also nice, not that big but have some good views. Thanks for another great journey ! Best !
I love watching your channel. Your series on the canal boats in England was my favorite so far

Thanks for sharing!
And don't forget Skunk Train/bikes or Avenue of the Giants.
Thanks
Glad to help!
Definitely awesome to see New Mexico and it’s beauty shared with people. It is definitely underrated when it comes to its nature.
I love these unique travel excursions!! More please!
You should do it!
This is certainly a most innovative and spectacular adventure, Mike, and one observation - you do not have acrophobia!
I never knew I had such an interest in transit until stumbling upon your channel! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Oh cool!
7:45 I love a good hot air balloon moment! There’s nothing quite like it.
Loving the more casual content! You’re the best! Keep doing what you’re doing. ❤
Thanks for featuring this wonderful place.
my parents live in palm springs during the winter. i love going up the tram when i go down to visit them.
Love the series. I have done everything featured in this series except the Roosevelt Tram in New York City! You're teaching me new places to visit and new things to do!!!
14:02 this is awesome! I think this is a location on Marvelous Mrs. Maisel!
7:25 that clean transition😂👌🏼
The hundred times I have been to NYC, I have never even seen the aerial tram!! What a great way to reduce traffic in big cities.
Awesome video as usual. Next time you’re in New York, please check out the transit museum in Brooklyn. It would make a great video. It has a Station underneath where you can walk on all the old subway trains dating back to the early 1900s.
Going up Palm Springs tram and the connected National park is one of my favorite memories! -That TWA hotel is so much fun -so mod
Just a word on translation. In Europe an aerial tramway is a cable car. A tram in Europe is what you would call a streetcar . Different languages differ slightly in translation . Good channel you always earn a thumbs up .
YES PERFECT! idk if you remember me in your last video complaining about the vid length but this is PERFECT!! thumbs up, thank you for the experience!
Glad to hear that.
Thanks for giving me ideas. I will do the NYC tram end of June and then the Mt Washington Cogway a couple of days later.
I never knew about the Palm Springs tram. Awesome to see these videos. 😊 Thanks
The Roosevelt Island one was great. The island is a nice walk as well - a great break from the noise of the city.
This was so much fun, and the views were spectacular! I thought the NYC tram just went from one side of the river to the other. I didn't realize you go flying through NYC among the buildings!
Man, I really love your content! It's inspired me to take a shot at travel vlogging when I go to Mexico in a month!
Loved your quote, "traveling for interesting things, makes for interesting travel."
The trams are an awesome way to experience the journey.
What a unique and fun trip. I'm glad you take us along, thank you for your great outlook on travel and life.
If you're around SW Colorado I highly recommend the Telluride Gondola. It's free. And there's a restaurant at the halfway point. And then a 4 wheel drive jeep tour of the mountains ⛰️ Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton too
Transit is a way of connecting people with each other
2:45 snow is a way to connect people with the ground 😂😂😂
This has been a really cool series, Mike! Thanks for understanding us fellow transit nerds’ need for wish fulfillment
You bet!
My fear of heights could never.... and so thanks for letting me live vicariously through you
You are so welcome!
