Today I learned the Arduino Analog pins can actually be used as digital outputs. I saw the wiring diagram with the LED in A0 and thought "that's not right" but after a quick google apparently, yes, you can in fact use them as digital output pins. That's incredibly useful for non-railway arduino stuff.

Great video! I love this series and also the fact that you will be adding stuff as we go along. I have also fancied building an accessory decoder using the arduino but still a newbie and still learning. The one function I would like to see added is a switch being added to it, as many old skool modellers still prefer a control panel. By adding a switch to operate each output would make it easier for visitors, as they may struggle trying to remember decoder numbers, which isn't always practical especially if the layout was exhibiting at a show. All the best Tony.

Thanks Tony. You could use an Opto module and have switches that feed DCC commands back into the system. Best of both worlds then. I did a previous video on this. “Use Infrared….”I am a beginner/novice too. We all can learn together. Thanks for watching. Cheers Daz

I am in the process of building a DCC controlled turntable. I currently have a Nema 17 hollow shaft stepper motor mounted on the turntable central shaft. 2048 steps per revolution, although I am considering gearing it for more precision. I am using a Nano clone mounted on a custom pcb, with a similar dcc code stripper circuit to the one you describe and a relay for reversing the polarity of the turntable feed depending on relative position to road 0. It is my aim to have the turntable remember its position when powered down to do away with power up seeking of home position, however I have an option in the software to do just that when required.
I already have the home position circuit and code working using a slotted opto switch and disc, but am having trouble coding the decoding of a dcc signal and selecting the correct road. I also need to make the direction relay work. Manual road selection by use of a rotary switch and homing on demand would be good to.
I use JMRI to control my DCC-EX command station and also need a pointer or two there as it appears to produce 4 outputs for each address!
Any pointers you could give would be appreciated.

thank you for your reply. You appear to be well in advance of me. Do you have Facebook? There is a great Arduino for model railroaders group with lots of talented modelers there.

Taz, where is the code that you said you would point us to at Rudys hobby Channel? This is interesting but like you I need to look at someone else code to actually be able
    to use this stationay decoder

You have accessory[4] twice in your code, so you’re overwriting the PIN number. This is in the last of the list of accessories in your setup().

Thanks for watching. A question or 3!!
    1. Would you make a decoder like this?
    2. If so what sort of tweaks would you make to it??
    3. How could I make it better??
