I met Denis Villeneuve on Sicario while working as a stand-in for Victor Garber. The friendliest Director I've met, even gave me a personal monitor and headset to watch a scene we were working. I've seen BR2049 twice, and will see it at least a third time in theaters. It is gorgeous and now my favorite movie ever. You read that correctly.
Couldn't disagree more. The main theme of the film is an adaptation of the start of "Tears In Rain", a theme that is also heard at the intro to the original. However, Zimmer doesn't go anywhere beyond that. No new tunes and there was zero incorporation of "Blade Runner Blues": Vangelis' best and most iconic piece from the original. The choral tone created for Niander Wallace was listenable on album but any composer can create the right tone. Vangelis' score was a synthetic and multicultural marvel just like his "Alexander". This one was either slow nothingness or literally painful to the ears. Yet another diminished successor score from Zimmer. Thinking it's "gorgeous" is simply because you associate it with the gorgeous film.
I was most impressed by one aspect.....near the end when K is reclining on the steps we can hear the sound of snow falling. Yes, snow makes a sound when it falls. I think that is the first time I have ever heard snowfall in a movie.
Forget about music and think about what the word soundtrack actually means. SOUND-TRACK. Not music-track, not melody-track... It's just sounds that are meant to enhance the intensity of a scene and this score did just that, blurring the line between SFX and music. If you want melody that you can listen to without context of the film you're beside the point here. And yes it is gorgeous precisely because it is associated to the gorgeous film its enhancing otherwise it's like taking the mags off a beautiful car and saying they're ugly cause they wouldn't fit on your living room's wall. Or even watching the film on mute and say it doesn't convey emotion.

My conclusion was that the interviewer asked several personal questions/ or demanding questions and then he said a complex word as "cells interlinked" directly afterwards which K was supposed to repeat as fast as possible. Just to show he was still a replicant and that the questions meant nothing to him. That's why later in the film he had trouble answering since (*SPOILERS*) he was questioning his own being, as he thought himself to be human at that time.

The bee's are the Sun's foot soldiers, they seek life, united in their grand design Man seeks power - seperate, isolated and divided in a wasteland of the own making, sucking the marrow from the bones of drones as their king's and queen's starve to death surrounded by gold
Replicant bees could. There's also the possibility the bees aren't real. Denis said in the video he "wanted the frontier of reality and dreams to be blurred' in the scene. I think the bees could be another memory implant? or a hallucination from being exposed to the toxic environment in the abandoned city. edit. Denis also directly points out the artificial feeders in this video
SPOILER When Luv comes with her henchmen to the city and abduct Deckard, they were all wearing masks bc I assume they're human. So does that mean Deckard is a replicant? The only ones without masks in that scene were replicants.... or if the ones wearing masks were replicants why would they wear masks and not Luv?
up to you i suppose , if the story works better for you with deckard being a rep or human then thats what he is . or it could simply be a mistake or an unwillingness to cover up the "stars" face .
Outstanding film; everything that it needed to be. But the first film was visually and sonically better. A+ for Original Blade Runner, A-/B+ for Blade Runner 2049
HEARD A LOT OF PEOPLE WALKED OUT OF THE MOVIE WHILE IN SHOW THERES SO MUCH OPINION IN THIS ONE AND 1982 FLIK HAUER AND HANNAH HAD IT POWERFULL IN 82-- THIS ONE??????
I will never understand why the director did not do more with the vangelis inpsired music. There was so much dead time with no music in the movie. The vangelis inspired soundtrack was barely used through most of the movie. A real shame. Vangelis' music was such a major factor to the beauty of the first movie. A real disappointment it wasn't used more. It wasn't until the very last scene that we even hear a clearly inspired vangelis track. Alas it was the best track since it was Batty's death scene music. Why couldn't he have done more like that throughout the movie. SMH.
I assume Zimmer and Wallfisch didn't want to just completely replicate (ahem) Vangelis's score. They undoubtedly drew inspiration from Vangelis though. The Tears in Rain piece in the very end of the film was definite proof of that.
It wasn't about replicating it was about using the phenomenal original score and re-envisioning it for the new film. Had they done this and had used the new music throughout the film they could have truly captured the spirit of the original movie. The director clearly didn't understand the impact the original score had on the film else he would have had hans zimmer re-interpret the entire original score add lots of new enhancement and original pieces for effect and sprinkled it throughout the visual scenes of the movie. Instead we have a collection of visual scenes devoid of the essence that made the original the cult classic that it is today. Sure there were maybe two or 3 scenes that did have good impactful music pieces towards the end but is was so scant considering how long the movie was. Hopefully the director will come to his senses have a new cut for the future digital release with musical score throughout. Sigh, I doubt it.
There was another composer who was attached to the project (who did the score in Arrival) but dropped out in august, according to IMDb, because he couldn't stay more faithful to the original score, so that would leave Zimmer and Wallfisch around a month's work of time to deliver the end result. I thought it was very good, even if it was not a re-creation, it did elevated the scenes, for me.
I guess it's supposed to be tension, dennis previous works also didn't utilizing music to get cheap thrills, especially sicario. There is a lot of silent moment in it
The busy bees, indistinct from each other, could partly be suggestive of all those child labourers creating the honey, the gold, the money, for the beekeepers (the capitalists across the world and, indeed, the 'everyday' Westerner saving a bit of money by buying child-made goods from people working long hours) suggesting China and Japan. Do we ever truly feel these labourers pain? No - we are like replicants who can dip our hand wholesale in to another culture and possibly not even be stung by any protest, let alone feel pain. The stilettoed statues an example of what future generations will think was , rightly or wrongly, worshipped - consumerism and pointy heeled capitalism. Bladerunner's always been about filling in the spaces yourself. There's always some grand, mostly empty, imperialist type building. Ideology remains as art but becomes decayed by grubby, opportunistic, greed. I'm disappointed when people just think that the 'what is real? Is what is artificial sometimes more real?" metaphors are purely about the characters. Ridley Scott's neo noir original is still a better film overall. All that thrashing about underwater at the end was not the poetic tears in rain that I think the director was hoping for. Walking slowly around a grand set feels cheapened to me by the fan service crash through wall employed so early on in the film. If Ana de Armas hadn't been in it, it really would have been a desert. She's the heart of the movie.
Picnicl interesting point of view liked reading this thank you :) I did think this movie was amazing visually yes I agree there could be no equal to the original but I did enjoy this movie a great deal :)))

Man seeks power - seperate, isolated and divided in a wasteland of the own making, sucking the marrow from the bones of drones as their king's and queen's starve to death surrounded by gold
They took out the thunder sounds... 😢
This is like asmr
This would have been better if AO Scott narrated this.
amazing movie! thank you!!!!!
Easily better than the original. Not even close.
The original is slightly better. It's obviously subjective.
“two thousand forty nine”
The bees can survive without flowers?
Replicant bees could. There's also the possibility the bees aren't real. Denis said in the video he "wanted the frontier of reality and dreams to be blurred' in the scene. I think the bees could be another memory implant? or a hallucination from being exposed to the toxic environment in the abandoned city.
edit. Denis also directly points out the artificial feeders in this video
My god, I can't wait to watch this movie tonight.
Don't bother you'll fall asleep
Simon Scott or maybe there's not enough splosions for your taste
SPOILER When Luv comes with her henchmen to the city and abduct Deckard, they were all wearing masks bc I assume they're human. So does that mean Deckard is a replicant? The only ones without masks in that scene were replicants.... or if the ones wearing masks were replicants why would they wear masks and not Luv?
up to you i suppose , if the story works better for you with deckard being a rep or human then thats what he is . or it could simply be a mistake or an unwillingness to cover up the "stars" face .
I LOVE YOU DENIS
Nooo. Not the bees. Not the bees
James Grey first thing I thought of when they appeared lol
Outstanding film; everything that it needed to be.
But the first film was visually and sonically better. A+ for Original Blade Runner, A-/B+ for Blade Runner 2049
Can Denis please explain what the one eye statue means. Hahaha
Nice

Shouldn't bees be extinct in Blade Runner? In the story most animals are extinct. They are dyeing out now anyway.

Well I haven't seen it yet but I look forward to doing so. This short clip is astonishing.
Decent film, but the original is better IMO and I saw the first one back in 1982 when it first came out.
I'm insanely jealous.
My all time favorite director

For honey bees to produce honey, they consume pollen and nectar from a variety of flowers. Where is the flowers? Is this a possible plot hole?
Didn't you listen to the video? At 1:15 Denis talks about the FEEDERS that the bees were eating from
Sorry. My mistake. His english can be a bit hard to follow sometimes.

HAUER AND HANNAH HAD IT POWERFULL IN 82--
THIS ONE??????
erratic or erotic?
Erotic, he does have a heavy accent lol but I like that about him
I will never understand why the director did not do more with the vangelis inpsired music.
Completely agree! Finally someone else. I found the 2049 score to be lacking severely.
There is a lot of silent moment in it
speak loudly , please
This dude is awesome
Why are you whispering like that.
Yan Amorim maybe this is supposed to be an asmr
To annoy us.
Dennis villeneuve like to whisper
He just seems to speak like that because of his native language
Yan Amorim he's not that's just how he talks also that's how director commentaries are they have to talk softly so you can still hear the audio from the film

I wrote an evaluation about this movie (not exactly) though still BLADE RUNNER. Evaluations--------my least favourite part of taking a composition class.
not this one, the original
Looks pretty cool.👶
