      No one in 2020 has less than an hour of screen time a day... The only examples that come to my mind are older people who don't have a tv and babies whose parents are really strict with screen time... If you go to school or have a job your screen time can't be less than 3-6 hours

    • @LunaWitcher
      @LunaWitcher 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I'm here on a screen literally every moment of every day. I play games and work on my final project for college on my computer, I watch TH-cam for leisure and news -everywhere-, I wake up and watch my classes through my phone, I go to sleep listening to sudoku videos... I'm the embodiment of the problem.

    This shows my age lol, but I remember when I was in high school, pre-modern smart phone takeover, my favorite English teacher was super into Henry David Thoreau. She was very adamant that we as a society spent too long on screens, connected to technology, and so gave us a yearlong assignment where we were supposed to periodically go sit outside somewhere nice for 15-20 min, unplugged, and journal about the experience.
    And it's funny, because a lot of people thought she was nutty back then, especially because the journal was such a significant part of the final grade and well, teenagers, but now that my screen time's exploded and I've stuck inside for too long, first thing I wanna do when we get out is find a goddamn tree to sit under!

Now I'm back on my phone and boy, drawing got way, way harder and also if I put my drawings chronologically there's visable regress. I noticed that I'm more inpatient, because I rush to get back on my phone. I also started looking around and noticed how it affects ability to focus of people among me, this is honestly kinda scary. And yes, I type this comment on my phone 😭😭 help

    LOVE THIS. I suffer from screen and content addiction, too. I am always listening to something, and I'm often getting content from 2 sources at once (TH-cam or Netflix in one tab, Reddit in another). It's awful for me. My head feels so cluttered. My goal for spring break was to do a digital detox, but the first day of spring break coincided with the first day of COVID-19 lockdown, so that kind of fell to shit. Thanks for talking about this Tiffany!

    I’ve moved all of my productivity to paper, I just get sucked in whenever I open the phone up. That’s one of the things I’ve noticed about myself. So I have a book journal, and a catch all type of thing where I have my budget and write down all of my purchases, by the end of each month I make a little circle diagram of it. A have a to do list in my kitchen and goals in my monthly view in my planner. I’ve been working on my way to use planners and paper like this for years and it’s also a creative outlet. So win win, less screen time and more creative time!
    Noticed the other day how powerful the writing stuff down really is, I’ve deviated a bit from writing to do lists while working at home and the other day I just had to empty my brain out. And it really made me more focused and on task. It sounds really stupid but it just got so much clearer. Plus I had a new fun pen that felt amazing to write with so I wanted to cross things off 🤓

    I started being more mindful with my screen time by making "youtube days". I give myself three days per week where I can watch youtube however much I want, and the other four days I simply have to find something else to do. They're not set days; I just decide whether or not I feel like watching youtube today. At first I didn't know what else to do when I would normally watch a video, like while eating lunch, but then I realized that eating and reading is entirely possible and still entertaining. So is eating outside. I also listen to music in the shower now instead of always watching/listening to videos. I put on spa music and practice mindfulness, carefully considering everything I'm thinking and feeling rather than shoving it down with media so I don't have to hear myself think. This one small change has made a huge difference in my daily life, and I would never want to go back.

And I have a blocker in my browser that blocks sites per periods of time so I do other off-screen things like sewing some clothes that need a fix, water our garden, go and help with the dishes, etc.

    11:50 if you love Spotify wrapped, I recommend getting a last.fm account and connecting it to your Spotify! It's similar to Spotify wrapped, you get weekly (as well as yearly) updates. It tells you what songs, albums, and artists you listened to the most, how many songs you listened to each week/year, and what genres you listen to, etc. I love it lol.

    The thing that got me was when I checked my "last 7 days" record in Screen Time and saw that I had spent 23 hours on social media this last week. (That's almost a whole day straight. Ouch.)
    I'm okay with using my Spotify, Kindle Cloud, LingoDeer/Duolingo, Libby/Overdrive, and Forest Timer apps as often or long as necessary, especially during this time of staying at home. These types of apps help me spend time (grow my brain), whereas on Facebook/Instagram/Tumblr/Reddit/TH-cam/Netflix I waste time (stagnate my brain) more often than not. (I'm all for social media and entertainment in healthy capacities, but 23 hours is way too much of my life per week for mindless scrolling+posting.) My goal: stop being a mental couch potato :)

    Great video! I'm not so much addicted to "screen time" but to youtube (which is on screen but by screen addiction I include social media and other many apps). Honestly it really makes me very sad. I've lost the count on the number of times that I told myself I would start reading more or that I would pick up this movie to watch and then I end up falling back on this black hole of TH-cam. I've decided that I'm only going to watch 3 videos per day because I was getting really fed up about the fact that since this whole quarantine began I've wasted my days away going from video to video. Some days I manage to pick up only 3 videos, but other days it's SOOO hard. It makes me feel very weak and like I don't have any control over my life. I would like to add that, please, be compassionate with yourself. These technologies are designed to be addictive! Hell, they literally spy on us in order to understand what our potential interest fields are and give them to us. Creepy as hell. So I can't share the mindset "technology isn't bad, it's us that don't know how to use it". No, technology definitely takes advantage of our human psyche to keep us hooked and to profit, which is always their main goal. So, technology is evil, at least how I see it. And it's not because it gives us some amazing features that it stops being evil.

    My favorite app to help cut down on screen time is an app called Forest! You plant a cute lil tree and it locks you out of the rest of your phone until that tree grows. If you interrupt it to go to another app, the tree will die and it's so sad because then there's a dead tree in your forest. I've also been using it to track how much time I spend doing things I actually want to reward, like reading, playing guitar, and other non-screen-related hobbies (you can add tags and notes to each tree so you can look back and see how your time was split). It's kept me off my phone and given me a snapshot of how much time I've spent on things that actually enrich me. It's super cute and I highly recommend!

    I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking out bullet journaling. I struggle so much with trying to keep myself accountable for things, but find that if I use my phone to keep track of anything, I immediately get distracted and start looking at social media or other random stuff. The basic idea of bullet journaling is very simple and unfussy, but you can make habit trackers, lists, and creative flourishes etc that suit your personal needs and goals. It has allowed me to have a better understanding of how I use my time, without the uncomfortable granularity that digital forms sometimes encourage. It has allowed me to be able to set my phone aside much more easily when I know it will be just a distraction, without worrying about losing track of things that I need to be keeping track of.

    Thank you for mentioning how taking care of our responsibilities IS a way to take care of ourselves. It's been hard hearing every day that it's okay to use this time to rest when as a student (or an essential worker or someone working from home), I cannot afford to rest like that right now! It's finals season and pushing things off is just making me feel worse and more anxious soooo. I guess my point is that everyone should just be doing what they need to to feel okay right now, and that won't look the same for everyone.
