- Recording outtakes from ''A Star Is Born'' (1954). Judy records ''Swanee'', the finale of the famous 'Born In A Trunk' sequence in the film. Judy goes through some false starts and a laughing fit, but bursts out in utter glory.

Tarvin Lit Most? All. It would be interesting to hear this auto tuned. Might break the speakers from the power. I heard a handsome young man who couldn’t sing listen to himself without auto tune, and to his credit, admit it was terrible. At least he was cute.....but what is Taylor Swift’s excuse?

@@michaelheath5615 If she wrote any good songs, I would agree with you. I’ve mostly heard schoolyard playground sing-song, chanting songs. To be fair, I’ve only heard a smattering of her work, so maybe it’s just the bad songs that became popular? Maybe there are some hidden gems there? Also on the positive side, I’ve heard heard of some nice things she has done, so she may be a very nice person? ….and finally on the positive side, I’m guessing you are a Judy fan, too, so we can agree on what a great singer Judy was. 🙂
This sounds more like an actual recording session than a rehearsal. So Judy's bad takes are better than many singers' good takes.
In case anyone ever has to ask why she is a legend....
I'm sure everyone knows that this was when she was filming A.S.I.B.. She was so good at laughing at herself. 4'11" and a voice as powerful as an earthquake. She died 51 years ago, and her admirers continue to grow.
She was born gifted. Her small height and long legs allowed for a compressed rib cage that gave her the force to sing in a way that has YET to be matched. There’s no doubt she was born to be the best singer in the world!!!!
The world has never been quite the same since she left us on that Sunday, June 22, 1969. I miss her voice, her laughter and her gifted repartee.
Zoltan Korda I happen to live just about 15 minutes away from where she was buried outside NYC and I left some flowers in 2014, 45 years to the day since she passed. I got all emotional because she is in a mausoleum and it made me think of my grandmother's grave, and it was she who introduced me to Judy and the old standards. I had no idea she was buried in the NYC Tri-State Area.

Greatest belter around that never lost quality because of the sheer strength of her vocal power. Some people who call themselves singers today think because they can hit a higher note. But can they sing entire songs in that high of an octave? Judy at times, might not be in great voice but she was always on pitch and in tune. Garland had God given talent. She still moves and astonishes listeners from all age groups.

Wow!!! That laugh! These powerful take after takes! That last long note is legendary! ZING went the strings of my heart for Miss Judy Garland! Miss Electricity! Wow. I just can't stop marveling how dynamic this woman's voice is. To hear her laughter is pure heaven.

It means a great deal to us die hard Garland fans. We can never get enough of her. Keep them coming. With today's music the way it is, we need as much Judy Garland as we can get. ***** 1922 was great if you were wealthy, WASPY and healthy. Fraud and government control was rampant, ex. Prohibition, a great chunk of politicians were KKK members, and if you were black you weren't considered worthy of human respect. How about all the money made by chemical companies to create poison gas for WWI. This is all factual, im not just giving my opinion aside from what I learned from oral histories from the people who lived in pre-war America.

I don't think this was done at Capitol. This sounds more like the original prerecording soundtrack sessions at MGM. But your point about the lively ambience is well taken. Nowadays vocals are far too often done in a tiny, dead booth with the mic 1" away. Yuck.

the second take is very good - not sure why the third one was stopped - love the laughing. The recording mikes give Judy a rougher sound - that's Warner Bros. for you. Only on "It's a new world" do you hear a softer focus - Garland was stunning in the movie - but if you want to hear superior film recording check out "Friendly Star" or any other song from MGM's "Summer Stock"
Yes, as big and as great as this “mid-1950s” voice was, Friendly Star is in my TOP 10 list of her recordings.

What a voice!
Yeah, it's a big, beautiful voice. Huge, rich and satisfying. But that's just for starters. It's somehow also deeply interestning. There are strange anomalous things going on in it that capture the imagination somehow. I can never get over the fascination of her sound. And then there's the musicality , the theatracality, the mastery of the art form known as popular song. She had it ALL!

Micheline Lalonde what did you mean a “miss”? She was laughing pretty hard.. I heard they used to put “fart” sounds in her music because it would make her laugh hysterically.
I think she was expecting Ray Heindorf to give her a cue to come in and he didn’t and she missed it and just totally lost it.
Just a fact, this was recorded on June 14, 1954, She also recorded “Black Bottom” From the movie the same day.
