  • The 2024 Met Gala took place last night, on Monday, May 6, in New York City at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The official dress code was “The Garden of Time.” The exhibit will feature approximately 250 rare items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection. Spanning over 400 years of fashion history, the pieces will include designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more. Some garments that are too fragile to ever be worn again-such as a Charles Frederick Worth ball gown from 1877-will also be displayed via video animation, light projection, AI, CGI, and other forms of sensory stimulation.
This year’s 2024 Met Gala dress code was “The Garden of Time.” Inspired by J.G. Ballard's short story of the same title, written in 1962, it was interpreted in a myriad of ways. We certainly saw many a floral and botanical looks grace the famed Met Gala red carpet.
Today I talk about looks from Tyla (wearing Balmain by Olivier Rousteing), Bad Bunny (wearing Maison Margiela by John Galliano), Gwendoline Christie (wearing Maison Margiela by John Galliano), Zendaya (Wearing Maison Margiela & Givenchy by John Galliano), Jennifer Lopez (wearing Schiaparelli by Daniel Roseberry), Anna Wintour (Wearing Loewe by J.W Anderson), Emma Chamberlain (wearing Jean Paul Gaultier) & Ben Simmons (wearing Thom Browne).

Olivier had a interview yesterday talking about his face sand sculpture and talked about the fragility of the fabric and Tyla fabric, he said "is possible that the dress become unweareable after leave the body" so is even more tied up with sleeping beauty theme

I did like Lana Del Rey's look at first, I recognized it the moment I saw it. However, seeing the recreation and reinterpreted piece next to a photo of the actual McQueen Widows of Culloden piece made me...sad, for lack of a better word. It could have been so much better, and I feel like that's a summary of how Seán McGirr's time at McQueen has been.

I didn’t know it was a remake…but when I saw the original picture and Lana’s something was incredibly underwhelming and I didn’t understand why…it’s because it was a reinterpretation. And then Sean was there by her side…embarrassing lol

i think it might be a reference to the original tale of sleeping beauty. In the story she pricks her finger with a needle and falls asleep for 100 years. Thorny twines grow all around the castle making it impossible to enter and a lot of princes that want to find the beautiful princess die. After exactly 100 years another prince tried and finally got through and reawakened her with a kiss

I was all in for Tyla's look. Not boring, actually digging deeper into the theme (unlike 99% of attendees...) and feeling somewhat cohesive to her style and personality imho.
As for Zendaya...I think Margiela look was perfect for the occasion AND for her. It had just right amount of pizzas, volume, reference and styling to stand out, but not feel outlandish for me. The second look could feel like miss because for me the volume overwhelmed the statue and there was no strong counterpoint on the top (face, make-up) aside of that headpiece to balance the overwhelming sea of black. Shall the giant skirt had more dimension to be reflected on photos, it could register better I think.
My biggest question was: who exactly chose Chris Hemsworth was co-chair..? His look was a no-look, referencing more of wannabe playboy for 80s than anything vaguely connected with the actual theme, his wife's look was underwhelming...

I won't lie I'd love to see a back to back Galliano exhibit... all the Margiela podcast stuff was so interesting, that I feel small clips of him speaking here and there interspersing the outfits would make for a fascinationg show. The man is interesting and educated. and has a lot of influences.
on a different note Olivier's outfit and Tyla's were very good reference to the stone statues in the original story and the sands of time. Not the obvious flowers.

I would've brought something from Loewe SS23, a reimagination of the anthurium dress, or from menswear with the grass coat. The grass coat would've been perfect for the garden theme and the growth of the actual grass as a representation of time.
I also thought of Virgil Abloh's LV skyscraper jacket, a new version of that would have been cool. Skyscrapers are representations of time periods in the urban environment. Each building are calcified versions of their zeitgeist.

It’s very hard for me to appreciate this kind of style. For women, there are 2-3 silhouettes all of which are conventionally flattering and attractive. For men, there are endless suit variations but most are no more interesting than what the women are wearing. I would love to see Carol Christian Powell designing for the Gala… maybe someday such a world could exist.

Very disappointing looks from some of the co-chairs. Overall, the looks this year lacked imagination, creativity, courage, playfulness.

    (Sigh)
I think I just saw Fairytopia.
Olivier stole the show - in fact the MEN stole the show: Barry Keoghan, Eddie Redmayne, Lil Nas X, Kieran (coat for the fit 😬) Damiano David, Alton Mason…No idea who their designers and stylists are.
Most people looked like they were going to the opera or Vegas (Jennifer Lopez) and I wish I had not seen any flowers or clocks.
The sand dress would have been interesting if she had moved in it and we were able to watch it fall apart.
While Kyla looked beautiful and her dress was fantastic, fascinating…unique. When I saw the aides lift her like a mannequin and place her stiff, vertical body from stair to stair - I was embarrassed since they might as well have paraded a literal plaster dummy.
I will not watch another Met Gala until they hire some on-air hosts who have some knowledge of Fashion although it 2024 was a step up from 2023’s “YOU LOOK SO AMAAAAAZING!”
