  • Clint McCance went on an anti-gay tirade on his Facebook page, indicating he likes it when gay people die of AIDS, that he would run his kids off if they were gay, and much more.

I strongly feel that David Pakman is the ONLY editorial on this issue that actually got to the root of the real issue. That being, this was NOT an apology for the offenses committed, it was merely a dodge and duck. I am frustrated with the manner in which anderson cooper left out so many important follow-ups. I think it was mis-handled by cooper and I am left wondering why, very curious.

I am a Korean-American immigrant who have grown up in this country and I had this bizarre experience in high school. The teacher asked my class about any immigrants that they knew and one girl said that the only person she knew who was an immigrant was her maid. I then said, "You know I'm an immigrant, right? " She replied, "Oh you know that you don't count as one of those people..." I was in disbelief over her ignorance.

Great job, David. I was bullied in elementary school by THE PRINCIPAL who seemed to pick up on the fact that I was gay before I had words for it. He was a monster so to have an overseer of an entire school board in Arkansas like that - and worse - is/was terrible!

It's important to remember that this was an interview of a man who is only known for his hate filled rant against homosexuals on Facebook and was conducted by a respected journalist who happens to be gay. I found Mr. Cooper's respectful interview style to be completely appropriate and demonstrates why he (Mr. Cooper) is an effective, though reluctant, ambassador for gay rights.

I have stopped watching CNN exactly for the reasons you pointed out. CNN, though the SAY they are a balanced news outlet, they take "balance" to mean 'we aren't going to make people uncomfortable, we aren't going to push the envelope in the direction of what is right, and we aren't going to confront idiots like this'.

He never once apologizes for his message, he simply apologizes repeatedly for his delivery of it. Hence, he feels no more need to apologize for his ignorance than he sees a reason to be embarrassed by it. Indeed, he is not apologizing for punching homosexuals in the face with his comments, but for his failure to throw a much better punch.

I agree with you on your opinion about Mr. McCance interview but I feel Anderson did a great job by asking him questions that would give McCance enough rope to hang himself with. I don't feel that it's an interviewers job to get into a debate but to show the people watching who is this person really about and does he really believe what he is saying.. IMO I agree with you McCance was only sorry that he got caught and not by what he said... and I believe Anderson got McCance to show the world that same thing.

The frightening thing is that he is not aware that one of his sons could actually be gay! For either of the children’s sake we can only hope that neither of them has been born gay, especially in that household! It is obvious that nothing really seems to have changed with Clint McCance! He is only sorry that he was caught, he is sorry that he used the wrong words, not his actual beliefs!

How can people say being gay is "a choice"? When did you choose whether to be straight, gay, bi, trans, ace...? Oh right, you didn't, did you? Realistically, nobody would choose to be homosexual with the world being the way it is. Nobody would choose to be bullied, taunted, discriminated... You're born the way you are and that's that.

Most homophobes do not believe that gay teens should be bullied into suicide, but that they should change their 'sinning unchristian and abnormal ways" He may well have sincerely changed his position towards the mainstream of anti-gay movement and away from the extreme vicious rhetoric.

When I originally heard he was going on AC360 for an actual interview, I expected him to apologize profusely and claim something like, "I was drinking the night I posted those hateful comments and, with some stresses in my personal life, I took my frustrations out on a group of people who have nothing to do with my problems.", or similar.
But, nope. Not drunk-posting... Sad. He should have just given a short, written statement of apology, including his intention to resign.

Mr. Pakman, This dude from "Arkansas" obviously still believes what he said. He is just apologizing about getting caught. I am a gay 63 yr.old male who still doesn't feel comfortable identifying himself as gay. I do not look or act effeminate as some of my gay brethren do. For that reason I have heard a lot of negative comments about gays in conversations around me in social situations and I get tired of always being the one who calls them out for their ignorance. I live in the deep South; the Bible belt South where no one wants to hear about positive comments from the Bible; just those that maim and mutilate or kill those that are different. Voila Clint McCance and so many more you just can't imagine.

He definitely pissed him off. I actually appreciate how Anderson manages to stay neutral and just lets the guests talk and doesn't interrup and shout them down but by now I have noticed that he starts to blink his eyes rapidly when he gets angry. It must be quite upsetting for him to talk to homophobes who think he is scum and would probably like to see him miserable or dead and still not become emotional.
I have a lot of respect for the guy.

I think you are right about the non-apology and about the lack of follow-up. I would would like to remind you that in addition to the anti-gay issues, he also has issues with suicide and parenting. He is a complete mess. I'm not sure how I feel about this interview. I think the last part with the photos of the child were very uncomfortable and almost opportunistic by the network.

FYI-The term "commit suicide" is no longer being used in suicide intervention as it denotes the judgement of religious sin, or criminal behaviour. Instead, the terms "kill oneself" or using suicide as a verb, (ie/suicided) are preferred. This helps reduce judgment, open the conversation and invite people with thoughts of suicide to reach out for help.

So, in conclusion.... A person that is homophobic has had some sort of event in his life that has made him irrationally reject and fear the lifestyle. It has been discussed by the psychiatric community that homophobia is due to repressed homosexual yearnings of the person, and that is extremely scary for them to accept it so they reject and fear it to rationalize themselves out of the homosexual feelings, which can lead to hatred, anger, and fear toward homosexuals.

What I found quite messed up is that McCance had this guy sitting right next to him that they didn't show in the video feed that I'm sure was feeding him answers. He was very hesitant on many of his answers until the guy next to him whispered a decent response. Alot of the things he said were not even his words or thoughts which I'm sure would have made him look even less serious about the situation..

The man who came to talk to him was a man who lost his kid to suicide which was not related to the kid being gay. I think he understood the pain maybe of a parent who could lose a child to suicide. But I wonder if the same words had come to him from a parent who had lost his gay child to suicide would have impacted him in the same way. I feel that he has realized certain things about suicide, and clearly has not changed his position on homosexuality. But would he have even listened to the words of that man if his son had committed suicide because of being gay??? That's what I'm wondering.

I guess we're dealing here with a guy who probably has never met any gay people, who's obviously not that bright, who maybe has never been anywhere except Arkansas and has grown up surrounded by people as ignorant as he is, who reinforce this bigotry. The only hope i saw was where he said that he wanted to participate in suicide prevention going forward (however vague that statement was), so let's hope he does and that his eyes have been opened, however dimly, and he continues to learn.

But again, he wasn't there to apologize for thinking homosexuality was wrong. He's entitled to that belief. He was there to admit that it was wrong of him to turn that belief into hate speech. I don't think the guy actually wants all gay kids to commit suicide, maybe I'm wrong, but I know people often say things they don't mean. And btw, I DO think this apology could have been way better, I'm just saying that David Pakman was mad at him for his beliefs themselves, which he IS entitled to

With your comments you nailed on every single sentence that Mr. McCannce's said and he never apologized for hurting people and families that have suffer with this kind of statements. He said that he "used some really strong language that wasn't correct", but what he means is correct - wrong words for meaning the same thing that he feels in his heart and wanted to expressed. It seems that he'll never change his mind about he likes when gay people get aids and die.

Classic example of the fallacy of composition. The CDC also says that the highest rates of new HIV infections are amongst heterosexual women. And since the government has never been wrong before, it must be true. If you're so worried about disease spreading your way, here's a tip: practice monogamy and don't share needles. The HIGH RISK statement is obviously a misquote, missing a few important (read: crucial) variables, conveniently left out to make it appear to support a particular agenda.

I laughed out loud when you said, you didn't know anyone even *could* bring honor to such a perspective. Good one.
His apology is damage control so his community will re-elect him. That's his audience. Obviously, from his "We all make remarks like that," he does not think the *sentiment* of his remarks was so wrong... just that it was a little over the top, unnecessarily harsh and hurtful. And maybe the people of his community see it the same way.

When certain individuals use religion and media/status to convey what is in fact merely personal opinions they indirectly become representatives of their religion. So if McCance is a Christian, some might be lead to believe that ignorance and intolerance toward homosexuals are justified by this religion. It is because of people like McCance that some homosexuals associate religion with prejudice.

actually irrational fear. hatred is a biproduct of the fear. a phobia is an irrational fear. not an irrational hatred.

I saw the original interview way back when. It sounded to me that he was back pedaling because he got caught and is facing shame and public outcry. No genuine apology ... he's a joke and a terrible person... I'm a gay christian, and I see someone who's afraid of the media not genuinely apilogetic.

What Immorality in first place? You have a valid point. Both sides should "watch for their language and actions" but once again this is not a choice. Do you think

You can tell he wasn't sorry by the way he was stuttering and looking around not knowing what to say or how to apologize. Even though they were just words you can just tell how someone means it just by the way people word and say things.

David Pak. He doesn't need to apologize for his ideas and his views. He only needs to apologize for using Words that are not acceptable to viewers of public television. Many people not just Christians wish that our society will be Gay free. You can't made people apologize for that belief. Unless they start calling to kill gay people, that's a different story.

@zerosum This As a straight person, did you make a decision to be turned on by females, or did you just get turned on when you saw women you thought were a turn on? I doubt it! Why can't you see that it is the same with people who are turned on by members of the same sex? They are playing out the hand that they were dealt, and they don't deserve to be hated for it!

This guy is a Schoolboard VP and he didn't say "themselves" as Dave reads it here. I saw it on CNN and he actually wrote "thereselves". No joke. Leave the homophobia aside, this guy should've been fired for his grammar fail alone. No wonder our schools suck, our administrators are deedeedees.

He did not change his position at all. My position wasn't that extreme but even my past anti LGBT position took time to change. The fact that I more and more affirm the theologian named James H. Cone I am now seeing that I was wrong. There were reasons why I was against it and it had nothing to do with the Bible, even though I'm Christian.
