Through your videos, I'm being reintroduced to the show. My mom watched it when I was a kid. She's passed on now so it makes me think of her and how she'd love your videos!
Eli Wallach was my favorite mr. Freeze because he was so cool and he was so much different than the 2 Actors who played mr. Freeze in the 1960's TV series batman
I think the helmet makes more sense and it would be much easier now to be mic-ed up successfully. Thanks Rick for another bit of fun knowledge and the trip down memory lane :) Stay safe!
I think every Mr. Freeze has his own good qualities. Sanders overall had the best episode and performance, but Preminger was fun as hell and Wallach looked amazing as the sub-zero villain.
I believe the truest performance was by Sanders. He brought an air of authenticity to his portrayal of Mr. Freeze. I could feel empathy for him. The others were playing a part, but just fell a little flat. Mr. Freeze was a truly pathetic character who was not a criminal by choice. He always felt like he could be redeemed if given the help he so desperately sought.
George was the best. In the First Season, it was mentioned that Dr. Art Schivel was a criminal before he became Mr. Freeze. In his first appearance "Instant Freeze", it is revealed that it was Batman who spilled the cryogenic chemicals on Schivel during an attempted arrest.
Fun Fact: Clint Eastwood would’ve played Two-Face if the show wasn’t cancelled in ‘68. I would’ve been him and Eli’s first reunion before Mystic River (2003).
Some fun facts. Otto Preminger's grandchildren were huge fans of "Batman" and begged him to take the role of Mister Freeze. According to Adam West's autobiography, Preminger was the worst guest star they had on the show. Knowing Preminger's reputation in the film industry - he was a director who was famous for NOT being popular with his actors - this makes sense. Adam reported that Preminger was nasty and uncooperative during the shoot. He recalled there was a scene where he had to carry Otto off the set. Adam explained that when this is required, the "unconscious" actor provides assistance to make the job much easier to person doing the carrying. Preminger did not so this, and West could not lift him. During the next take, Adam said, he stepped on Preminger's hand, and he got the message.
1960's Batman known for its campy nature, but undoubtedly one of the highest rated and highly popular shows of the time period in the 1960's. Alot of Hollywood A-list types wanted to be in the show, which is why such stars like; Vincent Price, Roddy McDowall, Shirley Winters and yes folks like George Sanders, Otto Preminger and Eli Wallach as Mr Freeze. Turned up in the show despite its ridiculous bright and colourful campy outlandish tone and overall look.
Sanders brought an air of sophistication...and class to the role.the others just seemed to miss the mark.sanders emphasised the agony of living like that...the others seemed far too superficial like they were just playing the part not really living it.
But, it's amazing the producers were able to attract such a high level of Hollywood heavyweights (the actors who played Mr. Freeze, among them) consistently. Sanders, Wallach, and Preminger (whose "g", by the way, is soft, as in a "j") were all top-notch film actors for decades.
@@bradsmack1 as it was the IN thing right after it first came out...many actors requested being on it.only a small fraction actually made the screen though.many big names were eager..i dont know why they never found a place for them..maybe the lack of budget...
@@pl5624 Coulda been budget shortfall, but I'd bet more on the "line" was longer than the show had plausible villainous roles to fill! Remember, the opportunities were limited to a weekly villain guest spot. The heroes were already taken, and stars were not gonna stand for "extra" or cameo roles!
(Tom here, not Sandra.) Otto was my favorite!! He looked the part more. I liked the "cold zones" in the Sanders double episode, though. I don't know why they didn't duplicate that special effect for the Otto and Eli episodes. WHAT A WASTE!!! Wiiiiiiilldd!!!
I prefer the Sanders version, myself. The others were all right - they were certainly both over the top enough to suit the show's mood - but the Sanders Freeze was the first, and the only one to tackle how genuinely lousy his life must be. He was perpetually trapped in a cold-suit or a refrigerated room; he literally couldn't survive without technology - you genuinely felt he had a reason to hate Batman, instead of the other two, who were just power-mad. Visually, the helmet is a little underwhelming, but it works well enough, and it's visually distinctive, anyway - plus, it's kept to a minimum; most of Freeze's scenes just had him in a sharp suit, which was kind of a nice touch - I like urbane, cultured Mr. Freeze; we should get more of that side of him.
Ah yes, Otto Preminger was, by far, my favorite actor in the portrayal of Mr. Freeze. His characterization of Mr. Freeze seemed so real, in my mind as a child, that it sent shivers through my spine. He was so life like, that I had apprehensions about going outside in the cold of a harsh Michigan winter. I thought he would be out there comfortable in a Polar Arctic air blast ready to freeze me to death. My revenge to Mr. Freeze was to somehow lure him outside in mid July on a scorching, sweltering hot & humid mostly sunny afternoon! Mr. Freeze is the only villain I can imagine who would be infatuated with outdoor temperatures ranging from sub zero, to his preference of absolute zero!
Otto Preminger's "Wild!" Mister Freeze fit the funny style of the Dozierverse Batman show better than the others and his is the most memorable and iconic. I heard Adam West and Alan Napier really hated Otto Preminger, and I think that made his Mister Freeze feel more believably villainous. I think George Sanders' Mister Freeze is the best Mister Freeze we got in live-action for a more serious version, since he wore a helmet and had the least silly looking suit and the least silly acting, but Otto Preminger's fit in with the zany style of Adam West's Batman best.
George Sanders was my favorite Mr. Freeze and I liked the full helmet better. I think they, the production company, did an excellent job dealing with the film technology of the day.
That everyone remembered Otto Preminger played Mr Freeze led to AAh-Nowld being given the role because the producers felt the character was Austrian anyway....
I liked Mr. Freeze portrayed by Otto Preminger. There was something that his German accent that added to his character and made it more ominous and threatening. The same with Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Mr. Freeze he portrayed in the Batman movie.
It makes sense why the helmet was ditched for the later renditions of the character due to the audio problems the first time when the character had the helmet, though a helmet of some kind would make sense for Mr. Freeze/Mr. Zero. This was a cool video Rick, keep up the great work!
I thought that when George Sanders was Mr. Freeze was wearing a 3 piece suit. I thought that was the best costume. He was supposed to be in 50 below environment.
They could have done something like they did on the original Star Trek and use what looks like plastic window screen on the helmet. I never cared for it on that show, but on Batman, it would have worked. Thanks for the videos and Stay Safe!
I thought Otto Preminger had the Mr Freeze look and performance of a comic book character pretty much down. But I loved the George Sanders episode best. It had that eerie darkness with that blue glow around his victims. And that big Batfight with all those Batmans. How could you NOT love that.
Otto Preminger, and can you blame them for losing the helmet? OTOH I wonder if they could have designed the helmet with a mic inside and a speaker outside. Even if it sounded weird that would make sense, as long as you could understand Mr. Freeze, since it was clearly something devised for the only guy on earth with this problem.
