My second go at it is curing right now. Everyone is fascinated by the first homemade scales. Thank you again for this. Now folks can have whatever colors they like.👍👍👍💥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I learned to use wooden spacers on the edges to make sure that it comes out the same thickness all the way around so if you want a quarter inch put four little quarter inch spacers around the edges so that when you clamp it down it’ll all stay at a quarter inch
Finished my press/box today. Thanks again!!! I'll be building a few of these box presses. thanks for the tip about taking the box to the disc sander to square everything. That really cleaned mine up better than any woodworking project I've done previously.👍👍👍 Marked my plates like you did too.
I wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't know that micarta was made like that, first of all. Second… this seems like the easiest way one would go about making the dang thing! Super simple. Thank you, for sharing!
Mixed color material within the Micarta can add nice sequence of lines to your scales. I won a knife from the UK and the scales were made with 501 Blue Jean Micarta, them scales sure turned out nice, oiling made them standout. If you are going to use different colors when making Micarta you should try and give the scales a palm swell and give it a divot at the bolster end for your thumb, doing this type of work will make your knife handle pop with contrast color lines.
I've been thinking about doing the 501 Jean micarta and some burlap ones. I cant wait to actually put this micarta on the neck knife that will be coming out soon.
First of your vids I've seen. Nicely done. I've worked with epoxy before in furniture and I would definitely recommend buying a clear epoxy. Then the color will always be whatever felt you're using.
I'm new to this channel. Curious about making knives and been searching for informative videos. The videos I've seen from you, is informative, relatively short and you show/tell us about your faults, so we can learn from them. Great!!! I'll be following you and will explore your channel.
This is a great video! Thanks mate. Trying to find micarta or G10 for knife scales in the UK is an expensive nightmare. But this is really going to be useful. Plan on making some carbon fibre scales now after watching this.
Thanks for the video. I am going to give it a try. How dose the cost of materials stack up to the cost of premade scales? Great channel. Glad I found it. Robert. Custom Gifts @One Good Turn
spray silocon and dawn dish soap as a serfactant // no more breaking the molds apart they will slide off like butter, a gel coat will make them shine like gems. them if its texture you want just add or router it into the mold you could all so get some checkering files and treat the molds to that, while getting a knew skill . better that way then trying to checker it out of the mold. poly scratches easy. wouldn't want to scate around on it with a file if you had another way .. give it a go.
Hey bud, i subscribe to DIY Easy Crafters also and he uses a press like what you made, but without the boards on the end. He sets it up on a 2×6 or something across the top of an open garbage can so that the resin runs out into the garbage can. Just something to think about. You did a good job man. Oh, think about doubling up each color of felt....like 2 grey and then 2 blue....so on and so forth. Might make the colors show up better
Hello Erick, just discovered your channel recently. you got it - good job, very well explained! Thank's for showing! Leave a subscription - keep it up! Holger

Appreciate the video. I would have liked to have seen the outcome of the felt micarta shaped and polished
Just finished my first slab of felt micarta today and it came out perfect!!!😃😃😃
Thanks again! I love having this new skill!!!
Heck yeah! That's awesome.
I've watched a lot of micarta making videos. I really like your process. Can't wait to try it! Many thanks.
Watched a bunch of videos, but I'll be using your method of box building. Thank You!!!!

@@theriversexperience9383 Looking forward to that build.
That was a very good build. I liked the take apart form very much
Very clear explained!!! Thanks a lot for all the tips and video.
I use a lot of "Scotch Brite", it makes excellent Micara and best of all you don't compress it, just let it soak up the resin and set.
This video is enormously helpful! Thanks Erick!
You did it again. Always very informative. Great job.
Thank you, explained well. Easy to understand.

Great point, thank you!

Greek continent and user notes. I appreciate you keep up the good work❤
great idea with the box. I wanted to see the final result, how the layers look.
simple and it worked for me! Thanks alot from Seward Alaska
Thank you, I've learned a lot from you, with you knife building

Cheap as chips to do it yourself.
by far the cleanest vid ive seen
Good job dude. Very clear
Thank you for watching. I agree with everything you said and it can get pretty messy.
Very detailed and specific tutorial.
Glad you think so!

Those are some great tips, Thanks.
Really cool! Thanks for sharing!
Maybe some weep holes somewhere? Love the shooting targets too!
That's actually a great idea. I'll try that.
Subbed thanks for the demonstration!👍
Awesome, thank you!
Great Job. Thanks for sharing
Something I learned about tinting your epoxy . Do not use food coloring ,it will fade back to clear . I found artist oil paint works the best.
Thanks for the tip! I actually haven't had the chance to tint my epoxy yet. Looking forward to experimenting.
Looks great man. Well done on that simple form. Any thoughts on using some better clamps that you can really torque down to get more of a press?
I’m thinking of how one might integrate bolts into the design for clamping.
Also need some tips on working with Micarta…

They turn out great
Nice works🙇♂️👏👏👏👏
I wonder if I cut up a canvas painters drop cloth. If it would look like the ivory linen micarta. Think I'll try n see.
Thanks for sharing😊
Thanks for watching!
Very good video. Thank-you.
tis' the season... to make micarta out of shiny wrapping paper and/or hologram wrapping paper.... please
Awesome job thanks !
You can wax your forms with beeswax you can get for cheap or just buy a WC wax flange and melt the wax into the wood or composite.
I'm wondering if this could be used for a bow handle.
Perfect video

Thank you!
❤
Maybe I missed it ..
How long was it clamped up for? Another channel said up to a month.
24 hours is all that I left it dry for.
Great tips, thanks!
Hello my friend, what is the exact gender of the fabric you used? Thank you for your educational videos
I used felt for these.
Suus 'nice videre quomodo sine negotio facis) Tibi gratias ago pro positivo. Ego quoque micarta facere coepi)
What kind of resin do you use , I’m goin to make some in a few days
This was just Fiberglass resin. I would probably use a Boat Resin moving forward.
Are there dyes you can use in the resin
Great video. 👍
Thanks for watching!
Thank you
hi,what brand epoxcy u use & how many hours can open after proses
Is felt micarta stiff or it bents?
It's very hard.
How did you decide on the size of your form?
I kind of just figured out what I needed length wise for handle scales and then went with those standard dimensions.
Rather than clamps, I have some lead bricks, each one weighs 40 lbs - 3 bricks on top will give you 120 lbs of even pressure. Could be worth a try
Is it cooking paper that you use in the box?
Yup, its parchment paper.
Comments for the algorithm
The video of making the handle material?
to make g10... its same process but with fiberglass correct?
Yup, pretty much the same process.
Are there any particular materials you can't make micarta from?
You pretty much only want to use materials that can be permeated by epoxy or resin. I say the more creative the better though.
The Rivers' Experience have you ever tried newspaper? I think it would have a cool visual
Hello, could you provide the dimensions of the box you made in the video?
Can u plz make terracotta micarta?
Editing tip: Remove the first 5 minutes and replace it with a screen note that says "build a wooden box". geezus
Thanks for watching.
What kind of resin and where is the link?
great video What kind of fabric used👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Just plain Felt for crafting.
Good video. Can u give a sizes in centimeters ?
What type of resin... just fiber glass resin
This time was just fiber glass resin. I use clear resin now.
Why not just leave the parchment paper?
What thickness is that at? looks like 1/2 inch
They are 3/8 of an inch thick.
Wait...you own a disc sander, and that’s the biggest clamp you own???
