  • 90 thousand original miles! This is actually a fairly clean example. Yes I know there are nicer ones out there. But for this one to end up in a junkyard, it’s in pretty dang good shape. No rust, not rot, and everything is held together for the most part. Put some lipstick on this pig and take it to the county fair ! Might win first prize !

I actually bought a brand new 1989 Sundance 2.5 turbo RS auto. It was black cherry paint with gun metal dark gray on the bottom portion. It had a burgundy cloth interior. It was a beautiful car, but the build quality was horrendous and more squeaks and rattles than you'd dare imagine. I used a lot of silicone glue to quiet the thing down. For its time it was a very fast little car. I managed to put about 80k miles on it. It was still very pretty and strong and made someone else a great car.

This car always holds a special place in my heart. My late mother drove a Black Cherry '92 Sundance America. She had gotten it brand new about 9 months before I was born, and it ran like a champ until I think I was almost 13 or 14 years old (I'm 26 now). The steering column fell apart and we didn't have the money or a handyman to repair it so it pretty much got junked. Despite being a kid I remember this car needed very little maintenence and was very dependable! It's a shame because these cars are becoming harder to find through the years.

My first car was a maroon 1986 Plymouth Turismo. I owned it from 1995-1998, and it was no Chick Magnet but it ran forever well over 100K that I put on it. I remember that I went through 3 set sets of outside door handles, because of the cheap ass plastic they kept breaking off during the freezing weather. I learned how to climb through the hatchback, because both door handles had broken off. At the time I was so glad to get rid of it, because I had just bought a Pontiac Formula. Looking back I actually miss that old Plymouth.

The dealership claimed they fixed it, but they never really did. Bought an extended warranty for it, which wasn't a bad idea since the AC needed repair every few years. Blew its head gasket at about 105k. Valve cover gasket needed service a couple times. Had it rustproofed but the bottom inside door panels developed rust anyway. Sold it after 13 years of ownership with about 120k on it.

That white smoke tells the story by itself🤣🤣 You can see that the radiator hoses had been recently replaced due to overheating along with the radiator and thermostat. It's still in remarkable condition for it's age however other than the head being warped. It's going to need a full head overhaul to put it back on the road, and most people looking at a car like this to drive can't afford to pay the bill to fix it right. So that's why it's in a salvage yard

Cars with a single exhaust just about always have the fuel filler on the opposite side from the exhaust. The 60s-70s Dart, very much the precursor to the Sundance, was a rare exception.

That car is in great condition, too great to be sitting in a junkyard, I hope it gets saved, especially with 98k original miles, two months ago, we finally had to scrap our 1992 Buick Century after the steering column was torn up by vandals, it had around 98k-99k miles on it when we bought it back in 2011, and it had about 130k-135k when it was scrapped, which some people consider low for a 1992 model vehicle, we were all sad to see her go, but at least she went under her own power. :'(

This brings back some memories,my Mom got a used 1992 Dodge Spirit in I think...'97? The car was tan,all season thin whitewalls, plastic hubcaps, column shift auto and a brown interior, I know when it wasn't road worthy anymore because I kept the plates, sticker dated May 2007,the reason it went off the road is because the block cracked, but still, fond memories of the same sort of interior, thanks for the video!

thanks for making this video. it really takes me back. my first car was a 90 sundance.

it was a piece of crap but i still miss it.

The white smoke out the tailpipe might be the headgasket going out, in typical Chrysler 2.2L fashion. That might explain why no one could sell it and it wound up in the scrapyard.

@@robsrandomness7824 Yeah I know 90's Chrysler and Dodge vehicles had a problem with the paint coming off. I believe the whole time she had the car it kept most of the original paint. That was from 1994-2001 I think. It was still running and driving when it was kind of side swiped by a truck causing some damage to the front quarter area. The insurance company totalled it though because of the age and mileage. It had 120k+ on it when it was totalled out though.

Most of those cars usually good for 125,000 miles in them before the engine has to be replaced.
After the motor is replaced the car is usually good for another 125,000 miles till the motor brakes down and ether it has to get a 3rd engine or it would have to go to the dump.

We had one of these; I got it in high school and then passed it onto my brother. It went through 6 years and 75K miles of two teenage boys and in all that time we had just two problems with it; the paint started chipping off and the eject button on the CD player crapped out. That's it. We might even still have it if my idiot brother hadn't crashed it into a guard rail - don't worry, he walked away without a scratch. Although when my dad got ahold of him...

To manually check if there are any codes on it without a computer, do not start the engine, turn the key to the on then off position 3 times, watch the check engine light blink. The amount of times it blinks will tell you the codes. To find what the codes mean buy a Haynes Sundance Manual repair guide.

Man, I'd buy that car in a heartbeat. Those cars were nowhere near as bad as (way too many) people made them out to be. They are actually very reliable and super easy to work on, and parts are dirt cheap. With routine maintenance they can easily get 300,000 miles when properly taken care of. I still see the odd one putting around...and that's here in Canada where the friggin' road salt eats cars way before they die. If this car was posted near me, I'd buy it no questions asked. Sold! 😁

Sister got a 93 Sundance Coupe in the burgundy metallic to replace the 87 Hyundai she got from mom that got badly totalled eventually. It had the 2.5 and it didn't even have the piston slap all of those had. It started out a great little car but quite a bit into its life with us it somehow ate its head gasket and that grooved the block. She ended up putting a good used engine in it for more than the car was worth and shortly afterwards the heater core plugged up and then both windows stopped working and even the air quit. Pretty frustrating so I gave up and eventually she replaced it with a 99 300m. We sold it to my coworker for 300 and he drove it till it yet again blew the head gasket on the new engine about a year after he got it. My step dad had a 87 Shadow and he put a ton of miles on it, piston slap and all. I think he finally got tired of it and they got a nicer, bigger, car but his was almost bullet proof and same 2.5 motor. I don't recall them ever being known for bad head gaskets but the piston slap was a known but non fatal issue for the bigger motor. If you like them the coupe 2 door was a much nicer and sporty looking car but aren't very common even when new.

My great uncle’s lesabre has 97,500 miles or so and the seats are like new just like this car. The lesabre overall is in great shape, but it doesn’t run because my sister was borrowing it like 5 years ago and she didn’t take care of it.

You forgot the most important feature which would surprise many people about the Shadow/Sundance. Most of these Gen-Z kids will be fascinated to discover that the trunk is not like a sedan. The Dodge Shadow/Sundance were actually hatchbacks, despite looking exactly the same as a sedan. Amazing engineering there. I have been searching TH-cam hoping someone would open the rear hatch in their review and demonstrate this feature.

Be careful on that engine. I had two and both the bolts on the water pump pulley came loose. You can guess what happened with the water pump not spinning correctly. So be sure to check the pulleys and belts periodically. The shadow with 2.5 was much nicer than the Sundance with 2.2 turbo. I enjoyed driving the heck out of both. Unfortunately the valve cover gasket is separate rubber and cork pieces. Where the pieces come together it will leak. Some permatex spray gasket cement helps. Anything else will just squeeze out when assembled. Cheers and nice ride. 😊

About 2 years ago, back when I was within my first year of using Craigslist, I found a lot of Plymouth Sundances and Pontiac Sunbirds for $300-$800, and because of that, and that I really like 1980s and 1990s cars that not many other people like, I have wanted one since then. Most of the Sunbirds I found were white coupes, and one Sunbird I remember was a red convertible that was $300.

Nice ride i would pay 500 dollars all day long for that for something to beat around locally, or for a possible flip. There is a TH-camr named Big Al's Bike And Auto that normally goes to auto auctions, and buys older cars like this for an average of 600 dollars out the door after fees. They may have minor stuff wrong with them, or may have nothing wrong depending on the history. Some were trade ins, or donations to charity. Some were just donated because the owners did not wanna deal with selling hassles which i do not blame them for. Some donations were from the elderly who stopped driving. Its amazing what that guy finds, and saves. If he did not save these vehicles they might of met their fates at the salvage yards because salvage yard people also bid on those vehicles. Its sad that people have to be so trendy when it comes to choosing a commuter vehicle nowadays.
