Another advantage of solar: With regular quartz watches you have to open the case to change the battery, and often times opening the case will significantly degrade the water resistance ability of the watch. To keep your watch as waterproof as it was when it left the factory, whenever you open the case you may have to replace and re-grease the gaskets and do a water pressure test. Solar avoids this, as there is no need to open the case ever, which means you get to keep the factory waterproofing.

You are right to replace the O-ring seal whenever you replace the battery. But rubber O-rings also lose their mechanical properties over the years.
Preventive maintenance of 3 dollars would be recommended to my opinion after 7-10 years to be sure to keep it’s water proofing (normal shelf life of O-rings).
      What do manufacturers advise?

You never know when you might need a function.
Some years ago, I was on a a business trip to France and decided to tour Paris on foot, intending to navigate by phone. My phone coverage went out, and I was essentially lost in a strange city with little understanding of French. By chance I had put on my Protrek, and with the compass function and a paper tourist map I was able to get around and make it successfully back to the hotel.

I belong to the large group of people who since many years have been using the mobile phone as watch instead of a wristwatch. And it's interesting that the mobile phone still has not totally replaced the wristwatch. But during long time I have thought: why in the world I have to pick up the phone every time I want to know the time?
I am enough dependent of the smartphone, and many times when I just want to check the time I end up at internet. Another thing worth to mention is that a good looking watch also is an ornament to a nice clothing!
I recently ordered a Seiko solar watch, and it will not be the last.

    • @TheTownWatch
      @TheTownWatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for watching! Yes, wristwatches are technically obsolete in the world we live in today with “computers” in our pockets that tell perfect time but there is something about owning and wearing wristwatches that I think brings a simplicity back to life that we miss sometimes. It is nice to simply look at your wrist to check the time and admire the art of a beautiful watch. I agree with you too, checking the time on a smartphone can often suck you in to other things on the phone!

No watch is without pros and cons. I have automatic, quartz and digital watches because they are exciting individually and for different occasions. But a watch was missing from my collection. So I bought a Casio Wave Ceptor (LCW-M100DSE-1AER) which has both solar and is radio controlled. It has a suitable size for me and features. However, I have put on a leather strap instead of the steel strap. Weight is 54 grams now, before 115 grams. I thought it was a good everyday watch. Good luck with the "time" in the future for all of you.

You should have also mentioned the KINETIC movement (quartz accuracy with electromechanically generated power, now somewhat out of favour) of which I have 4 (3 SEIKOS and a LORUS). However, my preference is now exclusively for SOLAR watches of which I own 1 SEIKO, 2 PULSARS (a SEIKO of sorts), 4 CITIZENS, 1 CASIO and 1 ESKEI. And that explains my love of solar: you can have a solid Diver, an Everyday, a fine Dress (that Stiletto is really thin!), a multifunction Sports and a really cheap (under £10!) multifunction Sports. All using the same reliable technology. But my main reason for loving Solars? They are all "ready to go" and require next to no adjustment, autowinding, etc, etc. I would (maybe) like a Rolex or Omega, but I just do not have the money - and they still would not be "always ready to wear.

Hi great video covered all the corners.
I have owned a Bering watch for 4 years and is ticking along perfect. Reason for going solar was that I only wear a watch very occasionally and didn't want to reach for one of the 4 I own to find I needed a battery change.
Bering make a range for all occasions and are very low profile on the wrist and in the case of my choice, fine mesh strap come with a safety catch on the strap.
Since my purchase they have become more competitive, I would heartily recommend 👌

    Very satisfied with them!
By the way: until recently I thought only Citizen and Seiko have light powered watches, but I see here there are some other brands as well. And I wonder why are the more expensive models not light powered?
Having that said, I am actually tempted to get some automatic watch. The backside window of Seiko 5s showing the mechanism is cool! The bad accuracy makes me still doubtful, though. I read somewhere about 30-45s deviation per DAY with automatics!

Good video. I have subscribed to your channel with the hope you will continue to produce quality videos about watches. There is another type of quartz watch that also is run by a battery that is chargeable, but not by light, instead by mechanical means. Namely kinetic, which I believe is only produced by Seiko. The rechargeable battery in a kinetic watch is charged by the movement of the arm just like an automatic. There is a rotor in the movement that when engaged, sends a charge to the battery to keep it powered, and it also does not require changing every 2 or 3 years. It's a combo mech/quartz style so to speak. I have 4 solar watches, 2 Citizens and 2 Casios, and one kinetic. Keep 'em coming.

@@TheTownWatch The Seiko Solar V175 movement have been around for quite a while. However their technology was vastly revamped recently thanks to the introduction of the V175-0EY0. You are correct in that nothing comes close for accuracy in a wristwatch UNLESS it is an internet connected Smart watch. These are tied to atomic time and are accurate to 1 second per 100 million years. The rubbish Apple iWatches have this accuracy however they are over priced mini wrist mounted computers that have nothing to do with what any sane person would call a true watch. Smart watches are over priced, glued shut, short battery life gimmicks that require a few hundred dollars for a technician to fit a very expensive "pouch" battery. Your claim of 20 years between a Seiko solar battery replacement is optimistic but then again most owners can perform this when required in under 5 minutes and for under US$15.00. GREAT channel! I can add that I have seen the T Touch Tissot and it looks nice but it is much more expensive that typical Casio solar watch. Rolex mentioned in this video does not produce quartz watches at all and is addressed to rich people. And last but not least you don't mention in this video smartwatches. This is a very popular type of watches in recent years.
