  • In today's video of Watch and Learn, we will discuss Solar and Kinetic watches. What makes these watches tick? How are they different from conventional battery watches, and what are their advantages.
You will find a Solar or Kinetic watch is quite simpler than you imagine, and they can provide months of trouble free use without requiring any charging source. And, because they still operate on quartz crystals, they are quite accurate!
Come check out the real "grab and go" technology.

I don't doubt the quality of Citizen watches. My wife gifted me a Citizen Quartz on our wedding day in 1980. The battery life seems to go on forever & the quality of the timepiece continues to be impeccable after all these years. Trouble is, I have yet to find a Citizen watch (except for my old Quartz) that speaks to me in terms of design and aesthetics.

    • @mrmagoo.3678

A little step up in quality..and price unfortunately.. But not by too much
      Tissot..or Seiko..maybe Phoibos or Helm
Between those 4 manufacturer.. They are amazing quality and great price for what you get..Citizen never really appeal ed to me either looks wise

@@mrmagoo.3678 I own 3 Citizens, I bought them strictly on cool factor and tech, they're definitely not great looking watches beyond their divers, which to me, all divers look about the same and Citizen to me, has the best value (I'd love to get my hands on that $400 titanium diver, but I have too many Citizens already). I'd love to see them put their tech, reduce the features and increase design and aesthetics. As a brand, them seem more concerned with pumping out product than art.

When Seiko came out with the “Kinetic” I thought another Self Winding Watch.... that is not new technology. I soon learned, it was not a Former “Self Winding” Movement I grew up with, but indeed a kinetic with a quartz Movement but Charged by the movement of your wrist! Thank You for explaining the difference. I have several Solar and Eco Drive Watches. My first Battery Operated Watch was a Bulova Accutron 214. It has a tuning fork and hums! Citizen has since purchased Bulova and has a new Movement a 262 kHz “Tri-tuning fork Movement.” Very Accurate. The Grand Seikos are introducing new watch Technologies and accuracy within seconds in a year! I’ve been blessed to observe changes in technology in Watchmaking over the years. I still love Mechanical Movements and with improvement in lubricants extended service periods. Thanks Marc for your videos and explaining the new technologies!

As mentioned in video it displays as fully charged at all times. Even being stored away from light. I had the watch running non-stop. I have a Casio eco drive world timer watch that I bought 8 years ago. It is my tool watch that I wear on all occasions especially when I go flying for the Airline. Amazing thing about it, I have not been using it for the past few months, but it still works extremely fine when I try to wear it a few days ago. It has been conserving energy and ticks to the exact time when I expose it to light.
I could say it is one piece of excellent engineering from Casio. I will cherish it and put it in my watch cabinet. Now my daily watch is an Omega Seamaster or a Seiko Presage. Great video by the way. Most probably I will buy another Citizen watch eco drive with perpetual calendar or a world timer with Radio controlled built in. Can't really decide about it. Cheers 😁

    Mark, great tutorial!
This may be a question a lot of you already know the answer to, that said what is the lifespan of a solar watch (not the battery life) the watch itself.
I don't know if it's true but I've been under the impression they don't last forever.
If you could shed some Light on the subject I would really appreciate it.
Also I'm thinking about 2 watches first is the Seiko SSC017 and the Tissot Seastar powermatic 80.
If you were to buy one which would you choose?

      About 10 years, or more.
Citizen did a few tests of their eco drives that had a second battery, and showed that the second battery would have about 80% of it's storage capacity in 20 years.
So while they do degrade, they degrade in a way that they store slightly less charge each year, so even when they're less effective as long as you wear them outdoors you're likely charging it up enough that you never have issues with power running out for at least 10 years.

I have a solar Seiko SSC019 and it's been rock-solid. Like all my solar watches, I put them outside for an hour each Saturday for a sun bath and they are all very happy.
Kinetics are a controversial subject in the watch forums and I don't know why, exactly. Other than the lack of hand-winding (a couple of Seiko models now do, called Direct Drive), they get their energy the same exact way an automatic does -- through wrist motion. I also have the Seiko SKA371 (nicknamed the "BFK" for Big Frickin' Kinetic on the forums) and wearing it for a day once every two weeks is enough to keep it charged at the six month reserve level. It is true that the early kinetics in the late 90s had capacitors and were prone to premature failure, but Seiko had been equipping all their kinetics with lithium ion rechargeable batteries for more than ten years now.
Great informative video as always, Marc. Greatly appreciated.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are correct; early kinetics ran on capacitors as the battery technology wasn't advanced enough; it is now.
The Seiko direct drive never really caught on (in my opinion). And I think the issue with the regular kinetic is the rotor has alot of resistance and needs to be moved heavier than an auto to keep it charged up.

Lee, just 2 days ago, I bought the Seiko charger for my kinetics. Wearing the watches would maintain the low level charges they had when I got them, but nothing I did would get them up to a full charge. They are great watches otherwise.

Good to hear, Michael! Those dedicated chargers do work very well.
PS. Shouldn't you be busy abstaining or something? :)

Hey Mark, two questions. (1) Is the Seiko Kinetic's rechargeable battery widely available or are these special order batteries? (2) Any news on Locman making any new Montecristo-style watches? They have some of the most beautiful crowns I've seen and I LOVE the blue Montecristo 200 but it's a bit bulky and I'd love to know if they'll have slimmer options in the future.

Not sure about Locman, I think they are pulling out of the USA market.
The rechargeable batteries are available from Seiko. When a watch goes out of production, even, they keep parts on hand for about 10 years usually.

Serious question, what would happen if you put a kinetic watch in paint shaker Would it damage the watch, or charge it just fine?

Thanks for your interesting clarification about kinetic and solar watches. Which type is best in your opinion?

I've noticed when opening the back of a watch many years ago, there seemed to be a lever which I believe is used to either speed up or slow down the watch. It was located right over the main spring. Do you recommend the user adjusting the speed or would it be advised to let a professional do it? As always a very informative presentation.

We did a video on this, regulating a watch. It is doable by the end user.

Thanks, appreciate the informative review. Do you have any experience/knowledge re: 'behavior' of ciitzen eco-drive battery? I've had mine for several years now of daily wear, lots of charge, good accuracy but lately I've developed a battery-sized and shaped rash on my wrist under the watch. Do emissions or chemical of some kind leak out of the battery over time?

More likely there's a foreign substance on the back of the watch that's irritating. Try cleaning off the back thoroughly. Some individuals after allergic to the metals used, like nickel.

I bought a Citizen BM 8180-03E secondhand in around 2004 and have only now replaced it with the same watch because it was no longer holding a reserve charge. That is 16 years or more use without ever opening the watch. It was still keeping time if it was worn but after 24 hours in a draw it stopped. Not even a Rolex will go that long without needing some attention, at least my brothers doesn't. He spends more than the cost of a good solar watch on servicing it every couple of years with the Rolex service agent.

Marc, was watching this video again and had a thought, if the solar watch recharges with light exposure would it be possible to have a sweeping second hand? The one click per second is a battery saving design to my understanding so is the battery is recharged with light then that would not be a concern. Maybe 2 months or even one month standby but that would be ok to get rid of the second hand bounce. Thought?
