This took me back to the late 90's to when i was a kid, going grocery shopping with my mother after school. When she was at the checkout, she'd hand me some loose change and I'd go to the gumball machine just near the exit. By the time we made it to the car the gum had always lost its flavour.
Hearing this song and seeing this photo just brought that memory back, along with a few others.

As someone who lived in a rural lower middle-class neighborhood, a lot of the local grocery stores and buildings still had decor from the 80's. Plus, many of the shop owners still had their music tastes from the 80's so they had a very nostalgic and older vibe. I remember going to the store after school with my dad as a kid to get food to make for dinner, so this brings back memories of my childhood even though I was born in 2002. There's also a local pharmacy that still has clocks/decor from the fifties and plays oldies as the original store owner opened the business in the 50's/60's. Then, Walmart, CVS and Walgreens and all those other chain businesses came in and took over. I still go to the local businesses though because they still have that nostalgic warm feeling of my childhood.

I was also born in 2002 and I had basically the same experience in rural Australia, there's only one Coles supermarket built in the early 80's that's left from that era but there's plenty of shops and small businesses that still have a nostalgic feeling, and I'm not too far from my mum's home city Canberra which has a huge amount of development from the 60's to the 90's so I get that feeling a lot there being in the shops and shopping centres and seeing the commercial and office buildings, I went there so many times as a kid but it was always so exciting that it'll always have that feeling, as well as nostalgia for the 2000's because that's when I went the most

It's 12 at night, can't sleep, you decide to walk over to the nearby gas station for a snack. As you approach the convenient store music can be heard playing over the tiny pump station speakers. It'll likely be hours before anyone comes by for gas, and by then the playlist or whatever will have moved on to another song which somehow emphasizes the tranquil loneliness of where you stand. You know you can't enjoy it long as it's only a matter of time until the tranquillity will be interrupted by someone needing either a cigarette or money, so you move on. Maybe after grabbing your coke and chips you stand outside the store for just a moment longer, you feel as if this darkness and emptiness should make you feel depressed, but for some reason you feel more contentment than you have felt in weeks. You almost wish you could carry this moment with you somehow, these emotions you feel at that exact moment are bland and a bit indescribable, but pleasant, the sort of contentment one could carry that would allow them to overcome any hardship. Once you arrive back at your apartment it'll all be over, you know you can't do this frequently as it screwed with your sleep schedule and you've already been late to work a few too many times to get a way with it again. That lingering contentment is just enough to lull you to sleep, maybe tomorrow won't be so bad.

It’s late at night and you and a few friends decide to grab something to eat. Everywhere else is closed, so you wind up at a local grocery store. Still dawning its retro regalia, it has a nostalgic feeling to it, whether or not you were alive back then. As it’s late at night, no one else is in the store, it’s just your friends and a tired cashier and janitor working the late shift. You wind up wandering the store, weirdly content, though overwhelmed with a sense of eeriness. As you walk through the aisles, this song starts to play. It feels lonely, but comforting. You eventually decide to get a frozen pizza and some Coke to share with your friends. As you walk up to the checkout, you catch a glimpse of a janitor who had paused his mopping to dance with his mop as though it was a microphone. It brings a smile to your face. He doesn’t notice you’ve seen him. When you make it up to the counter, the cashier checking you out is a middle-aged woman with curly blonde hair and blue eyeshadow. Nobody speaks as you check out, only the music and the quiet clacking of the number pad. You feel your mind start to drift, escaping into the nostalgic wonderland, and just basking in it. When you eventually have to leave, you and your friends sit down on the curb outside, taking candies and a couple bottles of Coke out of your brown paper bag. You enjoy your treasure as you look up to the glowing stars above.

You could have also had fake friends this is a thing it certainly happens and that would have been worse. 34 here, make sure when you are forthcoming with people that is reflected from them too. Words are easy to say. This isn't about doing favors and expecting something in return or being disappointed when favors are not given in return. Communication is not that hard. When people withhold things it's because they want to. Trust your gut. So many people worship celebrities and power, wealth, status...they will do whatever it takes to climb that ladder so to speak no matter what they have to step on. Seek balance, keep it lighthearted, don't be afraid to break a social norm here and there. Don't shy away from controversy. All feelings are valid. They will send you away from what's bad for you and toward what's good for you.

This song represents flowing through the sands of time on Earth. With very new era and century, human nature changes very little, our societies still entropy, and left in the power vacuum are snakes who always wish to rule to world. As kids we entertain that supervillains are funny to mock and laugh at, but don’t genuinely believe exist in real life, it isn’t until you’re finally paying attention to the real world that the very bitter truth hits you. That Saturday morning cartoon villains are very real, and they lead the world we live in. Even with this realization, we’re still here as human beings, we’ve been through worse eras before, seen war, chaos and destruction far greater than what we in the 21st century have ever encountered. And with that fact, center your soul, focus on what’s important to you, surrender to love, and chart your course in life. We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams.

I did the same thing with a local store in my town. When I was like, 7 or 8, me and my parents would shop there frequently. The freezer aisle looked just like the one in the video. Unfortunately, the store closed down and was abandoned about 8 or 9 years ago. But then, about 6 months ago, a new company came in and bought the building, and reopened the store under a new name about 4 months ago. I went in and checked it out. Other than modernized check outs, and updating the look of some things, the store was largely unchanged. It was surreal walking down the same aisles I did when I was a kid.

Songs like this hit different when the store's quiet. There's a certain energy to the PA speakers that you don't get listening to the music normally. It's almost nostalgic in a way? I couldn't say why. When I'm between customers, I sometimes just take the opportunity to lean back and reflect on stuff while listening to the PA.

There’s just something about this song I can’t really seem to explain.
Everyone keeps talking of hearing this in the 80s or 90s on their younger years. But with me having most of my childhood in the 2000s, there was a very slim chance of me having to discover this song. Not even grew up with it.
Yet when I heard it for the first time, it was quite an almost ethereal experience. Yes, I have heard 80's and older songs in the past. But nothing quite like this until a few years ago.
I felt like I’ve known it forever. That hearing it a couple of times later, made me felt like I was longing for memories of a time that wouldn’t have existed in my mind. It kind of spooked me, but not in a bad way at all.
I’d like to think of certain songs as ‘true’ time capsules. I believe this is one of them.

These days it's increasingly common to get a '90s or even early '00s classic. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" followed up by "A Thousand Miles" really hits with that "feel old now" mix. I mean it's not what plays on mexican grocery stores, but this one gave me a pretty cool flashback from when it was actually safer to go at 3 AM with friends trying to search for something to eat.
It was a little bit before Calderon's war with drug cartels, i had some friends over at home, i was like 14/15 years old, and My friends, a little bit older, it was 3 in the morning and we decided we were going to buy something to eat since we were playing zelda or something like that, there was still people outside, and stores open, the grocery store was 24hrs and alzo pizza places near my house, we end up.ñ buying pizza and ingredients for nachos, chips and some soda, now it weirdly feels surreal since it only went downhill after calderon's war, and now it's almost impossible to go out without a car after 8/9 pm where i live.
It's a beautiful, happy yet sad memory that makes me think about how fast times change.

i wish i was my mom. she was born in 1970, and got to go through all her teenage years in the 80s. i wish i was her so i could experience this in real life, being a teenager and the best songs of the summer playing over the speakers, my friends and i stealing shopping carts or going out for a drive in my friend’s flashy new car, maybe going to the mall and getting funky earrings and shorts with ugly patterns, pranking teachers and skipping school, leaving love letters is lockers, staying out as late as we wanted, dating boys in local rock bands, going to loud, loud concerts and screaming my head off, going to the movies with my annoying friends. i miss memories i never even had. i miss the music and the clothes and the bad movies and all of it. i miss the high school sweet hearts i never had, i miss the long nights spent at a friends house i never knew, i miss the music i sang in my room getting ready for a date i never went on. i just wish i wasn’t here, but that i was there. in a room, covered wall to wall with posters, and albums and cassettes all over my bed, my closet overflowing with loud colours, and my boyfriends picture on my bedside table. i hope time travel gets invented somehow, so i can go back and live my life how i want. how i dream. i just want to go home.
