"She'll go to her forever home in the woods". LOL - blew coffee all over my keyboard. Later, the 'new' dump bed went to it's 'forever home' in the weeds. What a great way to start a Saturday morning! Thanks Sam!
My brother probably built that truck, he worked there until they closed . our high school machine shop got a ton of tooling and materials from that plant. awesome find Matt..
Sam, I can confirm that truck has been in that garage for along time. My buddy and I didn’t know it even existed until the auction and we are both from Elizabeth, in the trucking business and in our late 40s. We looked at it and I said either Matt or Sam will buy it, glad to see it’s going to a good home close to us. 👍
Mack was always my favorite! They are one of the oldest and their trucks were running around before Pete or Kenworth! The only company that was around before was Autocar! They were founded in 1897. Mack was 1900, Pete was 1939, and Kenworth was 1923.
If it's going to see much road use, I'd swap to tubeless rims for practicality and safety while retaining the spoke hub look. Most of the tire guys I know hate dealing with tubes and split rims.
I just love seeing the smile on the face of a man who just bought a new toy. I haven't experienced that sensation in while BUT I sure as hell love when others experience it too. Good job, Sam ! 😆👍
That is just old school cool! Thanks for sharing the story behind it, I think that's always the best part of old things is knowing the history of them and the stories they can tell.
I’m in my 50’s now and must add live in the uk, my dad drove trucks all his life so I was always interested and watched all trucking films and shows etc, see that Mack brought back me back to my younger days. That is a beautiful example of how a truck should look. I’m really glad you managed to win the auction and can’t think of a more deserving person to own that truck 👍👍
I used to live outside West Alexander for 35 years and moved away over 4 years ago now and watching you guys drive around and seeing and recognizing the places around brings back such fond memories... thank you
Magnificent purchase Sam, what a glorious piece of American trucking history, simply gorgeous and for sure, you will be a fantastic steward of this truck, Denny will be smiling from a truck stop in heaven knowing it’s gone to you, just😅 so wrapped for you. First thing, a good cut and polish.
Love the Mack videos! Wife’s family has had a trucking company since 1920 and ran primarily Macks until the R models. Father in law still has his old cruise liner
What a beauty! I wish you could see something like this here in Germany. Keep the short wheelbase. I can't wait to see the conversion of the 50s Mack to a dump truck.
nice truck Scrappy please do not cut the frame behind the cab. unbolt your cross members and rear ends and add frame to end of your frame. P G Adams can make you frame rails to match your frame.
Cummins-engined Superliners were rare in the US but I can tell you all the ones we had in Israel back in the day had 855s, the V8 was never popular there. But one with a KT, well that's a unicorn, good catch.
I grew up on the Oregon coast in the 80's and 90's .The log trucks looked like this plus a lot of screaming jimmies.I love it .I just moved to the Pittsburgh area and will be a new sub following this build
I've never herd that the Superliner was designed by Brockway before, but it surely is the same "Mack type" cab that was used the last few years on brockway conventionals. Corse Brockway was owned by Mack motors since sometime in the 1950's anyway. I noticed the cab being the same as the last Brockways back when the superliner 1st came out. Funny the GMC General arrived looking along the same lines but didn't go on long like the Mack Superliner did. Really enjoyed the video! Great seeing that iron still being appreciated!
Thanks for letting me know that I wasn't having an hallucination when I saw the truck at the corner of 50 and 18, I thought I was seeing things. I wasn't aware of Denny's passing and the auction. The Mack definitely found a home that he would approve of.
God bless you, Sam! The photo of you with Dennis' sister and hearing of her appreciation that you're saving her brother's pride and joy was just simply heartwarming! Thank you for saving the old iron! 🙏🙏
Never was a Mack fan but will confess that is a beautiful truck, fine engine and I am very happy for you.Don't think you will ever regret spending a few more bucks to get it. Congratulations!
What a find! a Super Dawg with a boat motor, I have always wanted to build something with a KTA. I would stretch it and defiantly budds with float fronts.
That old girl is a beauty!!!!!!! I’d hate to change a thing on it, but a truck is a truck. Nothing lasts forever. LOVE the old beacon lights and daytons. Like being right in 79!
My dad bought 2 1979 superliners that my brother and I drove. They had NTC 400, 12-5-13 Trans, camel back with the deluxe interior. We pulled bellydumps and lowboy. We also had R700 with v8 and 2 R600s with ENDT 676
Hi Sam, back in the early 80's my dad and my brothers built several KW Glider Kits for local truck shows... in the 1980 project we used a KT 450 Cummins. Back then 450 HP was a big deal. 400 HP was the norm. The trucks were sold after the shows. Fun to see one run again! Ron from Sandy, UT.
Cool truck. I love how much of a time capsule it is. I can't imagine cutting it up and modernizing it when you have a fleet of capable trucks for hauling.
I always respected Mack for making their own drivetrain components, designed to work together. A more powerful, easier to drive and efficient truck that needed near half the # of gears for the transmission; less shifting and wider power band Mack engine. Brockway was usually Mack cab with other makers drivetrain components; same way the other makers made their trucks.
I’m not a truck driver but always loved heavy machinery and all things mechanical. What a beautiful Mack. It’s always sad to see something that was important, valued and loved by someone else left behind. However. I’m happy to see the Mack go to someone like you who will take good care of it and share it with all of us. I looked up the company and read the obituary for the previous owner and enjoyed reading the kind words.
Sam: Back in 1975 I drove a R model w/a 237 Mack and the Mack suspension it was a day cab . 5 speed main w/ 2 sp and rev. Even though it only was a 237 it would still pull the hills.
What amazing condition that Mack is in! Obviously you can do what you want with it but being so nice and original, I kind of hope you decide to leave her as is. I mean you've got two trucks more than capable of moving whatever you'd want to. Also think that short wheelbase just looks kinda tough too! Regardless glad it's with someone who will take care of it. Nice score!
Having a short wheelbase truck around could be handy for tighter areas, and really fits in with the classic vocational truck look. (edit, didn't notice his comment about the turning radius until my second watch-through, d'oh)
First thing i would do is convert that axle mounted steering box to something with a much better turning radius if possible then the short wheel base would be handy, the way it is it turns in the same diameter as the red truck and a shorter wheel base lol
I worked at the Fleet Maintenance Garage for Acme Markets, in the 70's 80's and 90's, we had B Model Macks, then R Model, then U Model tractors. When Mack left Allentown, and built CH Macks in South Carolina, they were such POS trucks, that the Company switched to buying Volvo Tracktors. Great Channel !!!
@@gregholmes3661, In 1990 it Renault Motors bought control of Mack, but they sold it to Volvo in 2000. Today Volvo is made in Dublin Virginia, and Mack is being made in Macungie PA Mack Plant. Which was a location that never closed, it made Mack Specialty heavy frame trucks.
@@gregholmes3661 yes they do !! Not sure if my 97 CH was a co-owned volvo/mack but since around 1997 sometime....maybe shortly after if I remember correctly ??
One of the 3408 cat powered early production models exists in a private museum in Exeter Tasmania. It was delivered to Cleary Brothers at Albion Park NSW when new. Spent most of it's life in heavy haul work. I believe Brambles Industries at Port Kembla had a couple with the 3408 also but I have no idea if they still exist.
Yeeee👍🏻😋perty cool Sam! The little chop at Matt about the utility body was/ crack up! Hope Matt gets a laugh out of it too! 😆 Keep ‘em comin’ man! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you ended up with it! There was a lot of usually low miles and low hour stuff at that auction. I couldn't believe how nice that truck was. That triaxle was pretty nice too.
I love watching you and Matt and seeing all kinda of familiar places because i'm from there too. I couldn't believe you made that turn on to South Main in that beast!
The smile and happiness when you on the bed was worth every bit of this video. I always glad to see your videos, but this one was special. Seeing your little boy was pretty cool too.
I love the older designs. They look like prime movers compared to today’s plastic fantastics. In Australia you still see a lot of the older trucks travelling through the north because they were built stronger and better in a lot of ways. Solid bodies and not hard to repair electronics as in today’s trucks. Great buy. 👏👏🇦🇺
i just love the look of those wheels and the short chassis. I know it might not be very practical for you to use it this way, but everyone stretches trucks these days and those short ones, especially classics are rare to see
I love your new mack project and I noticed a beautiful frieghtliner dump truck sitting aside, little mack is going to be awesome and amazing, see ya next time 😊
That is a very cool truck. Interesting with that super short wheelbase too. Think you could convince Matt to get around to the engine swap for Fat Allis? For as much as she gets used, I figure she deserves an engine that runs on more than 4 1/2 cylinders
You might be able to put the steering gearbox on the outside of the frame like on a Kenworth so you don't have to deal with putting it on the inside of the frame
That is one truck that should be in plenty of shows as it is very nice and original when you purchased it but not original when it was built and sold. Still sounds great and pulled very well. 👍😀😀
Truck was bought from D&M Mack on Wyoming st? You are correct sir would have been used for Michigan Doubles and so short for the Fruehauf Doubled that used to be pulled here in Michigan? Still a few around and still running. Used to be a lot of Mack’s that ran in the Detroit area, I probably even ran with that one but truthfully don’t remember if I did. I drove a F Model Mack with a 375 (turned up) Mack engine with a Mack 10 speed. Loved that truck and the old bulldog never let me down. Sorry for ranting but this just brought back a lot of memories for sure. Love the channel and can’t wait for more content. Thank you for making this old fart smile just about as much as you were. ❤❤

Nice find! That has to be a pretty rare truck. Good job!
