I'm 68 years old and these cartoons came on right as I walked in from after school. ( high school ). Thank you for reintroducing me to these memories. And for your verbal breaks keeping me informed. I remember the Thor theme song word-for-word. "Across the rainbow bridge to Azguard where the booming heavens roar, you'll behold in breathless wonder, the god of thunder Mighty Thor." (Over 50 years).
I can't wait to see the MCU's version of the Swordsman.
Beat for beat from the Avengers of the Kooky Quartet era. Eventually he became a companion for the Avengers before dying in the Celestial Madonna saga.

Steve generally wanted jobs where he either did the hero thing (like work with SHIELD or the Avengers), or had flexibility. He spent some time as an artist for Marvel Comics. At one point he got all of his back service pay (it was quite a bit, considering he'd either been a MIA or presumed KIA for decades), and later the government tried to force him to work for them (he turned in the costume and shield instead). In short, I think he'd be better off freelancing. He could pick his jobs, and the pay would be better.
The problem with the story is that it's a mess. Much of it is an excuse plot to have him fight (and get his ass handed to him) by the Avengers, and the Mandarin was shoehorned in to cut the fight short and give him some upgrades for the next one.
The ONLY excuse I'd accept for that kind of Deus Ex Mandarin is if it fit into a larger story, say, where Mandy was assembling his own group of costumed flunkies through this kind of audition or something. I don't think that was happening.
Regarding Swordsman, when "Solo Avengers" started it's run, half of it was a Hawkeye story, and the other half dedicated to a solo adventure of another Avenger. I think it started by introducing Trick Shot, the guy who really trained Hawkeye. I think it was his then-wife Mockingbird who asked why the Swordsman trained him in archery instead of a sword. He admitted the truth then his true mentor in the circus (Trick Shot was part of the show).
All of those panels with the Swordsman were used again, but with an expanded context with Trick Shot being his mentor, and introducing him to gimmicked arrows. He was also the villain at the start of the series.
Wanda embodies what happens when you overcompensate to make the teammates with the "useless power" and turn them into a cosmic deity level entity that could turn Superman to dust with a thought... And it dawns on you that might make telling stories with interesting conflicts a bit harder.
That voice on that Mandarin sounds like Bernie Sanders when he's on a podium

Stan and Jack were doing a lot back then. Some stories worked and some stories weren't the first priority
the solo avengers book, starred Hawkeye. most of this origin of Hawkeye was thrown out, with trick shot being his mentor. swordsman never caught on.
