I can't help regarding the insistence that Sonic needs a "fully 3D" game here to be a little arbitrary. I've always thought that altering the perspective and limiting the Z-access movement compliments the already linear modern Sonic gameplay pretty nicely, and, as you've stated here, the 2D stages in this game are actually really strong. They're all fast paced and kinetic and have gimmicks that justify the sidescroller perspective and limited movement, so I think there's really no reason to chuck them out entirely. They're a welcome bit of variety if you ask me, though I can respect that you just have your personal preferences.
Yeah, I'd like to keep them too. But I do like how they are explicitly different types of levels in this game so that I get the chance to play 3D stuff uninterrupted
I think what most people really want is it to be toned down, as recently there's been an imbalance with more 2d in a '3D' platformer. I think unleashed had a good balance.
I can't believe they made a full-fledged Shadow the Hedgehog sequel and decide to pair it with a Sonic Generations remaster like Sonic Team was cooking with this one 😭🔥🔥🔥🔥
I like to think Amy baked those cupcakes and is looking affirmation from Sonic like 'I baked these just for you. Please tell me you like them'. She's being affectionate without being too touchy feely
@ChannelPup Pretty sure they're also pink and blue cupcakes. Subtle for a Sonic game, but added with her high- I mean eager expression, one can reasonably assume this was not accidental.
The scene looks awkward. She is just standing there being completely ignored as she stares into the void. The changes were generally poorly made. Obviously, the budget didn't go to the cutscenes they changed...
@ no crying pup, take your wife Rouge the batpup, have a lovely Monday night, and we’ll try for a completely 3D game next time… maybe not… idk cross your paws
It's so weird because that mechanic is such a shoe in for those boring quickstep sections. If you added jumping and sliding to those sections they'd be way more diverse and interesting than how one note they are every time they pop up
Classic Sonic being silent to me is baffling, but I do wish they capitalized on that for his future projects after Generations. To me, Sonic Superstars should've been the PERFECT project to show that Sonic when he was younger really was about going from place to place, not really hanging around too long, while the other characters should speak and elaborate on the story in contrast. To me, Classic Sonic shows a different carefree attitude than his older counterpart. To which Classic Sonic really does embody the spirit of doing whatever he instinctively feels he is supposed to do and being free. Albeit a bit immature because Sonic when he was younger speaks as someone who wasn't completely ready to have sudden friendships with Tails, Knuckles, and Amy.
i'm so surprised, someone saying Sonic Superstars has good physics and not saying the game is completely trash because of the flaws of the game. The physics of Sonic Superstars are great for the game to me, it really fits the 3d visuals of the aesthetics and stages in the game. While Sonic Generations is good, but pretty weighty.
Sonic Generations: I'm really happy to see this game on modern platforms. I think it suffers a lot from immersion breaking pop-in like the reflections of Speed Highway or when the game level is still loading in during challenge gates (still waiting for that ranking), the drop dash felt poorly implemented with how it interacts with the world, and I feel like the script changing so drastically as opposed to just minor touch-ups like the Amy cupcake thing makes me wish they had either kept the story in tact or redid it entirely. As a game, I do think it could've benefited from an extra ranking past S to make the speedrun more challenging, but the base levels are still fun and the challenge gates offered plenty of extra fun and challenge. Shadow Generations: Might actually be one of my favorite Sonic games ever. They really polished up the open zone with less noticable pop-in, a more consistent artstyle, and more engaging collectibles and challenges. The levels also provide the difficulty I've been asking for for a while. The story was really bold for the inclusion of its legacy characters, though I do think it could've benefited from either more cutscenes or from scrapping Shadow's "reckless anger" arc in favor of solely focusing on him wanting to hang onto Maria and Gerald. The levels, bosses, and powers felt way more thrilling than base Generations, both on their own and when going for S ranks, though I wish we could've had some levels that mixed 2D and 3D. I do wish we could've gotten a level from Shadow the Hedgehog, and I wish finding the last couple open-zone collectibles was more convenient like if getting all S Ranks revealed all collectibles on your map. I also think certain aesthetic elements from Sonic Generations are more appealing than Shadow Generations, like the HUD, the automatic camera movement being smooth instead of sudden, the jump ball, the boost, etc., although the general fidelity and cutscenes and animations are definitely a a step up. Despite my criticisms, this has been the most fun I've had with a Sonic game since Unleashed, and more than ever, I'm looking forward to what Sonic Team have in store next. (Pup, don't read this.) 2D/3D HYBRID SUPREMACY
People consistenly always complain about 2D sections in 3D level. Just let people have their full 3D level for once! Still giving you entire 2D levels, which are frankly the best 2D level design since Mania, is a really nice compromise.
Sonic gens: the same thing where every change is either an improvement or unnecessary but still good in itself. 10/10 Shadow gens: I have nothing bad to say about this one except I want more stages. 10/10 Really hope we get dlc for this.
100% agree on the Mephiles fight thing, its SO refreshing to have a big bossfight actually be in a similar weight class as the player character for a change, its my favorite fight in the game, I REALLY hope Frontiers 2 has more of that.
Hey pup! The shadow glyphs are used to unlock the final boss. I know because I failed to hit the doom eye and didnt realize it until I was at the portal to the final boss and I got a waypoint that told me to go back to rail canyon.
I absolutely love your analyses of why the "controversy" about the Sonic Gens changes were completely inane and silly. The writing is so much better. In the first place this "controversy" was started by non-Sonic fans and it shows. You're pretty cool.
15:29 I personally never had that issue. Honestly provided these characters have "matured" for a while in all these stories, I can live with the change. I honestly found the whole fangirl thing a bit annoying at worst and sometimes funny at best. Like the Boom Cartoon showed it the best way I liked it: She still does like Sonic it's just more subtle, and her character is just more than a fangirl.
OH NO PUP IS STUCK IN WHITE SPACE wait pup already is white space so I guess he's at home lol love the review glad that shadow is finally being treated right ❤
This game is such a treat to play. I really do hope that Sonic Team is able to keep the talent that worked on _Shadow Gens_ for future games. Something that's really sad is Shun Nakamura, the producer of this game, has had people minimizing his role. He responded happily to IGN's review of this game, and some fans were saying he didn't contribute anything to the game, despite him being a co-producer for it. It's sad how some fans are so quick to judge individual developers when their name is attached to a bad game, but when they're part of a good one, some fans just either minimize that developer's contributions or just flat out ignore them. Responses like that are a cause of a lot of potential talent leaving a company or being fired. When you only call them out instead of also giving praise when they do good.
The reason why classic can’t use the drop dash in challenges, white space, or bosses, is because it’s considered an equipable skill (while for modern it’s just part of the normal moveset)
Interesting tidbit, during Metal Overlord, any time before the circling portion, if you try to use Chaos Control, Metal counters yours with his own. He's the only boss to do so in the game.
18:18 I love this change to be honest. Knuckles isn't treated like a doof. Instead he gives Amy a fond smile and makes their friendship more believable.
Don’t worry folks. If you don’t like the censorship thing with Rouge, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re a Rouge gooner and your opinions are equally as valid as those who feel the opposite. After all, if it doesn’t matter and you’d barely notice the difference, why do it? As for Amy, her adoration for Sonic isn’t her entire character but is heavily tied to the stem that branches off to her many other traits. And they cut the stem. Also it’s a huge factor in her DYNAMIC with characters like Sonic meaning it’s also a change in Sonic too. Although I do actually like the change with her shoving Knuckles because it DOES portray her differently. Shes less overall aggressive. It simultaneously means Knuckles isn’t the butt of a joke. The relationship between the 2 was altered making it a good change for both characters. I do think the drop dash is useless and the no-boost change on leaderboards is a cool idea. And yeah it’s a shame Mephiles doesn’t sound the same. His acting does but his voice doesn’t. I mean Roger actually sounds similar to Jason Griffith if you compare certain lines. Same with all the other characters. Mephiles just doesn’t sound like the same concept. It would be like if Roger Craig Smith’s Sonic voice was actually the voice replacing Dan Green as Knuckles. And to the Vegeta comment… it would be odd for them to openly admit other properties Shadow is inspired by, then proceed to not give Shadow any personality traits or backstory of Vegeta, and then be worried about being sued regarding Shadow supposedly being based on Vegeta. Different voice. Different attitude. The only thing based on Vegeta, and you can see it in the concept art notes, is his scowl. The only reason people compare Shadow to Vegeta is because he’s the anti-hero to Sonic and people look for as many comparisons as they can. Like the 7 emeralds and Dragonballs. (There were originally 6). Super Sonic is clearly homage to Super Saiyan (never officially stated though, however many seem to misremember that they did) and Silver being Trunks which they may have been open about being inspired by Trunks. Otherwise, Sonic is Michael Jackson, Santa Clause, Bill Clinton, Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat, Bugs Bunny, and freakin Mario. Fans have snowballed an exaggeration of a comparison. lol
Finally- somebody said it about how stalker Amy was just annoying and that her being toned down is just hypocritical. My only problem though is that the animations really look awkward for both of the changes to Amy’s cutscenes. Especially the cupcake one- it’s just so bad.
So about the drop dash point at 9:08 their's a reason even I missed at first but you can see when you customize your skill sets that the drop dash is considered a skill and skills can't be used in boss fights, rival fights, white space, or challenges. What makes the choice of making the drop dash a skill is that it's only a skill for classic and not modern which you can see by the fact that modern can you the drop dash whenever
Now that you actually went into detail about the amy cupcakes scene, I now respect it more (apart for the weird animation). Knuckles not flying into the tree anymore is still a shame though. It was funny.
I do agree it was funny but I understand that Sega is recently clearly trying to make Knuckles a much more serious character akin to Shadow (while still being goofy sometimes)
7:50 in my opinion, classics physics shine in precise Platforming. If we could get a mix of classic physics with generations sonics jump, i think it could be the perfect classic gameplay
Ian flynn's archie writing was ABSOLUTELY like that, so much of it was "remember scrimblo from 100 issues ago??" And going back to old plot points. Not as a criticism i loved it but sometimes it was crazy. Also he brought in sonic riders and tails adventure and such
That is classic comic book writing. Bring back some random plot point form 200 issues ago, because the writer had a new idea for it. Continuity is never a bad thing of course.
@@borederlands5387 It's Generations... the entire point of the game is corny callbacks to old stuff. I don't understand people's beef with that line. Due to 06 being erased the only experience Sonic has with time travel is Sonic CD and its time travel via time stones. Unless you count the Rivals spin-offs which have Silver time travel, but they barely interact in that.
@@borederlands5387 I mean considering they seemingly couldn't change the cutscene lengths or the dialogue timings, there were only so many places they could slot the time stones reference into. I think Ian's tendency to bring back stuff from the past can result in really cool stuff if they just let him do more with it. That part where he tied things together with Shadow having the yellow chaos emerald in Sonic Gens, finding the fake yellow chaos emerald from SA2 on the Ark at the start of Shadow Gens, and then giving Sonic the fake one when his plot-mandated loss against Sonic came up was brilliant. Who knows? Let him cook and the time stones might become more than "a random thing that's never brought up" in the future.
•It would've been nice to see Classic Amy and Classic Knuckles alongside their modern counterparts. •I really love the cupcake scene. It shows that Amy is still a silly little sweetheart. The original scene was never a problem... until people started weaponizing it. •I do appreciate that Knuckles isn't being one-shot by a hedgehog, whatever color they may be. •The implication that Classic Sonic ate Angel Island is still technically a fat joke. So, I don't see a problem here.
I think 2D sections, if done right, are great ways of adding a little diversity to the levels. Though yeah keep them FAR away from the open zone, PLEASE!!!
I agree that I'd like to just have a fully 3D Sonic game for once, but I appreciate the middle ground that Shadow Gens comes to. Yea we still have 2D levels, but now they're completely seperate from the 3D ones which don't have a single 2D section in any of them. Splitting them up like that is much appreciated for me personally.
I'm all for the rewrite personally, like, Pontac and Graff aren't artistes extraordinaire and it was corporate work for hire anyway. They did overdo it in places - like, Amy's line upon being saved is kind of girlbossy which doesn't quite gel with Amy and removing the reference to her feelings for Sonic from her bio was sus, but at the same time it's nice to see her with a little more to her again. Like, she was flanderized to hell and back into being a crazy stalker for Sonic while her main traits - her compassion and kindness - were forgotten so it's nice to see an attempt to rerail her personality back into being, well, a personality. One detail that flew right the hell over my head is the cupcakes being pink and blue, like, I just saw it as Amy holding two cupcakes with a dopey expression for no reason and now it all actually makes sense.
Tbh Amy knocking Knuckles into a tree is a better scene, because Knuckles can be knocked back every now and then, just don't make it a standard thing. Berserker strength Amy from Sonic X is still pretty dope to me XD But other than that, the changes to the cutscenes in Sonic Generations are all better to me.
Nah man. Knuckles is the frickin guardian of the master emerald, protector of the flora and fauna of Angel Island, one of the strongest characters in the series… anyone casually effortlessly smacking him around like a rag doll is an insult to his character. There’s way better ways to get comedy out of Knuckles (issue #3 of IDW being a good example) than reducing him to a slapstick doofus. Twas a good change in my book.
As much as I like the twist that Shadow let Sonic take the fake chaos emerald, I'm kinda disappointed we never got to see Shadow use it. Because it was always a bit if a mystery as to how Sonic used Chaos Control with it, and the second they brought it back, i was really hoping they'd dive into it a little more, maybe show that Shadow is capable of the same thing, or maybe even that because Shadow is so connected with Chaos Energy, that the fake emerald just works differently for him somehow?? Idk, I just wanted to get more into that thing, because it always fascinated me how it was even possible it was used the way it was, yet Shadow was extremely surprised that could be the case. Still an awesome moment, and i won't lose sleep over it. Just a little missed opportunity
When it comes to the story of Shadow Gens, at first I was underwhelmed, and the more I think about it I go to disappointed, to frustrated, to mad, and now I actively hate it. I could go into details, but to sum up my thoughts here the ideas. Gonna be going into what Shadow was in the past, what Dark Beginnings did, and what Shadow Gens did, there will be a tl;dr with my affirmations without explanations. Shadow in his history has had pretty much 2 characterizations (SA2 and Heroes onwards) which are natural build ups of each other, and Shadow' character was pretty much concluded. Dark Beginnings was a great prologue that at the same time reintroduce aspects of Shadow from SA2 into his current character, recontextualizing "Shadow has moved on from his past" into "Shadow tries to move on from his past," but also introduces 2 new apsects for his character: his shame in himself for what he is, a Black Arm, and being at failure at what he wants to do, saving Maria. Shadow has a character was always about the struggle of existence, and this creates for Shadow both an ideal and real self which he struggles with. And now I am mad at Shadow Gens, because it as many contradictions in general, some contradicting Dark Beginnings, which makes the canonicity of what it brought debatable, and in a time when Sonic Team/Sega wants consistency in lore and plot in Sonic, it honestly baffles me as to how it happened. But outside of that, the game present Shadow in ways that combine his 2 iterations in a way that doesn't make sense, especially with how prologue portrayed it, and in the end it feels like a character regression to his SA2 character, completely negating what he became in Shadow 05 and Sonic 06, and it didn't expand on the new ideas that were brought to the table tl;dr: Shadow has evolved to have 2 distincts versions since SA2, Dark Beginnings added nuance to this evolution while planting new seeds to his character, and the game both contradicts the prologue, and presents Shadow in weird blend of his 2 versions that doesn't make sense, to eventually reset him back to square one and negating his character growth, and not expending on the new aspects of his character Dark Beginnings had set up.
The reason why the Drop Dash isn't usable outside of main stages is because they made it a skill instead of a natural part of the moveset...on CLASSIC Sonic. On Modern Sonic it IS NOT a skill, it is actually added to the moveset. No idea why that is tbh.
I'd like to see a Rush style game that can take what works from Shadow's 2D stages and build on them. This is in addition to a separate FULLY 3D game and classic style 2D game. I think we have what could be a fun separate playstyle, but it just needs to be recontextualised.
I remember the exact moment I realized Shadow Generations was my new favorite Sonic game. After I beat the final boss, I was running around, wondering what else I could do, so I decided to check out my favorite level. That's when I saw the second ranking requirement for if you have the Doom Wings. If this were any other game, I would have sighed and just done it begrudgingly or potentially have become incredibly frustrated. When I saw that I had to play through these levels again to get a second S rank, I became EXCITED. I have an actual excuse to play these levels again, and I enjoyed every second of it.
Is anyone else still waiting for their sonic jam skin email? I signed up for the newsletter, but still haven’t gotten anything on my end. I suppose it’s not a big deal. I tend to play as modern sonic more often so I have the Dreamcast model, but still it would’ve been nice to have the variety.
Thank you for adressing the thing about Amy, just pointing out what they changed and whether you like it or not is fine but some people got waaay too angry about it i feel though i will say i personally do like amy as less "head empty" but thats just my taste (my fav amys is are the ones written by evan stanley and ian muchler (hope i didnt butcher that name)) fantastic overview of the game!! i expected a bit more of a zoom in on individual hub world dialogues between characters but that would be.. quite a lot to get into so i get it haha will probably come back to this video as just one of those things i put on in the background while drawing cuz it was a joy to listen to your thoughts
I am actively enjoying this game as I'm typing this, but for the collectibles and Chao I wish they had a skill you could equip to detect where they are.
I appreciate the defence on Ian Flynn and agree with a lot of the points made. I know his writing isn’t perfect, but he’s still doing great with characterisation across the board and you can tell really he’s trying to do right by this franchise. I don’t think a couple of references is really enough to override all the other good he’s been doing.
honestly it makes more sense for Rouge's "heart plate" to be more encompassing. she's a thief first and a temptress second and the last thing you want while being fast, agile and stealthy is two "Sacks of inertia" forcing you one way while you want to go the other, making the plate more encompassing helps with eliminating said inertia. Did i just spend 10 minutes thinking about the logistics of boobs? Yes. Does anything what i just said matter? No. Was it fun? Absolutely.
You earned a sub for this :) Came up on my feed and I gotta say, you perfectly summed up my own thoughts... even down to talking about Rouge's weak voice direction. Anyone reading this: just get the game. It's amazing. If this is the new golden standard, Sonic is officially better than Mario again.
I always liked the more bratty and teasing side of Rouge, I thought her “whatever” line delivery was a perfect gag and showed how Rouge, while frustrated with Shadow, knows he’ll pull through in the end
Sonic Generations having more references in the rewrite is so funny to me in the discussions because people arguing that Sonic and friends would just see Green Hill and Chemical Plant as places they just went to with no special recollection is just funny because I doubt the writers had a deep philosophy of showing that Sonic and friends have MANYYYY adventures we don't know. Nah it's because Sonic Generations was stuck in the meta era of treating Sonic as just a kids franchise
47:56 Colletcing them in stages, where you have an encounter with Black Doom, opens one of the Black Moon' eyes. If you dont't get them before going into the boss fight against Mephiles, you won't be able to unlock Doom Wings. The game then will tell you to go back to the stagres where you missed the glyphs. So these are essential to finish the main story😉
4:54 some changes from og gens vs the new one. 1. Sonic and classic have had their speed caps increased to let them run faster. 2. Sonic and classic have had their jump height increased. 3. The only changes are the lighting and all the character and enemy models being upgraded. 4. Story has been rewritten 5. Classics basic spindash as well as his quick spindash and drop dash have been given a boost in power. 6. Drop dash is a skill equippable for classic sonic. Modern sonic was coded with it. 7. New bugs got added. Oops. Lol 8. Water has been retextured. 9. Chao and red star rings have new ui. 10. No new skins in the base game besides those 3 skins. I did encounter 3 glitches related to oob that can't be forced... While playing. Kinda funny. 1. Turning into super sonic near a wall in chemical plant causes you to clip inside the wall and get softlocked. 2. On one of the grappling things... it launches you beyond what was the original path. Thankfully ya don't die. 3. Classic sonic can end up clipping through certain areas. None of these glitches are game breaking and are rather rare. If anything... their hilarious.
18:00 I feel you're missing another reason some people (including myself don't like this scene). I get maybe thinking the slapstick is a bit much but I don't see how this is disrespectful to or mocking Knuckles as a character. Sure Amy's actions are the same so her character isn't hurt but a fun aspect of Amy that still exists today is her being stronger than you'd think and this was a fun showcase of that. I just feel like it used to a more fun expression of her character which is now just a bit more plain for no real reason. 20:00 Also while I like Ian Flynn's writing on Archie I really don't think him loving his references is anything new. This has always been a thing with him but I just think due to the nature of Frontiers and Shadow generations there's been a good excuse for them.
For the first point, Knuckles is supposed to be this uber strong lone warrior, yet here he is getting treated like a punching bag ever since Sonic 06. It’s kiddy kid garbage slapstick that treats the characters as just boring Saturday morning cartoon characters.
@@Mojo1356 Remembers Sonic having Saturday Morning Cartoon shows in the past. Uh-huh. What punching bag in 06? I don't recall anything of the sort. And there's the Sonic Mania Adventures where they overblow his paranoid nature regarding to the Master Emerald. And it was ONE time in Sonic Generations in happened to him. But, for the most part this is fine. Knuckles is one of my favorite and I thought the scene was funny! I honestly think Sonic Boom didn't do him any favors in the game and the TV Show was alright with some jokes with him, but he was really made fun of a lot there.
@@viruschris3160 Mania Adventures wasn’t released until after Sonic Forces if memory serves, so I don’t count it. Even then, I’m talking strictly modern Knuckles. As for being a punching bag, it’s not like he’s good for anything in 06 other than slapstick with how inconsequential he is to the narrative of Sonic 06. As for the cartoons, even those were better than how poor Knuckles was until his course correction in Frontiers. This even extends to Frontiers in for a guy that is a commander of an entire army, all he does is boring talk with no charm or personality.
@@viruschris3160The problems are not obvious, but they had been steadily becoming trends in games. In Sonic 06, he can't catch the letter, but that was fine, and when they arrive in crisis city, they fall and knuckles and tails crash on the floor while they are they can fly/glide but sonic lands in a hero pose, and then in lost world and generations he is just disrespected. He became less of a solo warrior but more of a a weak guy and pretends to be tough. It was not significant, but noticeable enough to make him become a joke.
18:08 This was the only joke in all of Generations that made me laugh, it reminded me of when Amy was trying to get Knuckles out of the sewer. It doesn't ruin Amy, but I feel like it's too awkward due to the lack of slapstic, it feels more serious.
So with Classic's Drop Dash, you'll actually notice it doesn't work in challenges and bosses because it's a new SKILL, to be equipped from the Skill Menu like Super Sonic and the Instashield, as opposed to Modern who has actually had it bolted on to his base moveset.
I actually want more 2D levels like in Shadow Generations because right now SEGA isn't making stand-alone boost 2D games, only Classic styled ones. I do want them to continue making them separate like in Shadow Generations tho. Switching to 2D mid 3D stage is something I never liked
When I got the game today I started with Shadow despite never having played the original Generations - not that I wasn't tempted, I think the last time I considered buying it was about a week before SxS was announced - that's how hyped I was for it. 😅
Just Saw the Full Review and I am so glad that SXSG is I can confidently say it! THE SA2 FOR THE 2020'S THERE YOU GO PUP I SAID IT FOR YOU! Also I really enjoyed the live streams you did looking forward to more live streams and videos in the future!
With the financial success and critical acclaim Shadow Generations is receiving… ladies and gentlemen, the idea of an entire spinoff franchise starring Shadow and Team Dark is legitimate possibility now. Hell, if they keep it up, other well known characters could get their own spin offs. A character like Silver is definitely in need of one.
Classic Sonic's model change was immediately noticeable to me and honestly makes a huge difference for me. I have always hated how round and safe looking his 3d model was
It’s really hard to put into words just how much I love shadow generations, from the story to the gameplay I never ounce felt like I wasn’t having a good time. The soundtrack is awesome and although I do love the drum and bass electronic music, I will say there are better ways of doing and it’s even been done with unofficial Sonic music. As far as the rewrites for original gens, I’m not to upset at it. Although I do find it unfortunate that they did remove some of the slapstick in it, although the sonic characters do carry themselves with more sincerity they’re still cartoon characters and I really do want that element of them to be preserved. And one thing that this game did that I cannot praise enough, is showing that the boost has never been an issue in any of the games but it was just poor level design and implementation (like in forces and somewhat in frontiers), and that it absolutely can work in an open 3D space.
Great review! It’s too bad you didn’t talk about the decisions of which levels to put in the game (specifically the lack of StH levels in favor of Frontiers), but otherwise agree with pretty much everything! Although with 2D like this I could get used to it being a mainstay.
YES! Thank you for saying what you did about Amy and Rouge You've just gained a Patron supporter. I feel like all the complaints and criticisms that Amy has gotten as a character recently comes from people that either just dont understand the character and are being disingenuous, or are just parroting what they've heard others say without actually bothering to understand why the changes are happening in the first place. I know I personally got tired of the fangirl borderline stalker Amy gag, but I'm happy that she's matured and toned that down. She obviously still loves Sonic and is still the same happy loving girly girl we've known all these years and I think the additions to her character have been great honestly. As far as the "woke" stuff nothing has been funnier then watching the anti woke grifters try to infiltrate the Sonic community only for said community to kick them out on the curb and not tolerate their absolute drivel. *Insert the get out meme sound here* If people are really that upset about rouge pulling up her breastplate and covering her back a bit more and being "less sexy" that's what the internet is for I dont know what else to tell you. Also only true Rouge enjoyers know about her totally not a dominatrix bonus outfit in SA2 😏
Mmmm... I think being married to Rouge the Bat is probably like a Husbands of River Song situation She probably just wants to get something from you, and I'd bet you're not even the only one! ... The camera angles in the 2D stages reminded me a lot of Sonic Rivals on PSP, which I seem to remember having a lot of little cinematic movements during gameplay.
It really astonishes me that one of the main points the haters have about Amy getting ruined is that she doesn't clown on Knuckles, the OTHER character everyone was complaining was ruined in the 2010
I only have 3 issues with this game. Sonic gens didn’t change modern supersonic. And Shadow Gens didn’t explain squid enough and it locked a lot of bangers behind deluxe(I am… all of me Live and Learn This machine all of Kellin Quinn’s songs all hail shadow.)
Thank you for talking about how pointless the 2d section in shadow gens is, nobody enjoys those stages at all we would all be so much happier if they cut those and added even just 2 more 3d stages

Hard agree, criticism of 2D sections often comes off to me as "muh 3D" rather than than it actually being inferior gameplay.
Plus lots of official Sonic art has depicted Amy as someone who enjoys baking so I absolutely think those are her contribution to the catering.
That also reminds me of Sonic X where she made a bracelet for Sonic. It was just a really cute thing Amy did for Sonic
@ChannelPup Pretty sure they're also pink and blue cupcakes. Subtle for a Sonic game, but added with her high- I mean eager expression, one can reasonably assume this was not accidental.
Just passed the point where you reference this. Whoops
The scene looks awkward. She is just standing there being completely ignored as she stares into the void. The changes were generally poorly made. Obviously, the budget didn't go to the cutscenes they changed...
Pup: please no 2d in my 3D game
Sega: the people have spoken… more 2D in our 3D game
I must cry.
@ no crying pup, take your wife Rouge the batpup, have a lovely Monday night, and we’ll try for a completely 3D game next time… maybe not… idk cross your paws
@@ChannelPup On the bright side, THERE'S MORE 3D THAN 2D YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-
20:16 Honestly sanest take I've seen on the re-write
39:32 the slide is required in one particular hard mode challenge and literally nowhere else. It actually caught me off guard when I encountered it.
Well I'll be damned. 😂 I guess they remembered it's there.
It's so weird because that mechanic is such a shoe in for those boring quickstep sections. If you added jumping and sliding to those sections they'd be way more diverse and interesting than how one note they are every time they pop up
YES!!! I wholly agree with you on Rouge’s acting. That “Whatever” was the worst line from her in the game. But she was phenomenal in Dark Beginnings.
23:02 I'll never look at that scene the same, that's a hilariously accurate breakdown of the scene's pace
1:00:09 - “these two are flirting, and there’s no other way I can look at this.” I’m dead 😂
(Pup, don't read this.)
2D/3D HYBRID SUPREMACY
All good poi--
How dare you
People consistenly always complain about 2D sections in 3D level. Just let people have their full 3D level for once!
Still giving you entire 2D levels, which are frankly the best 2D level design since Mania, is a really nice compromise.
39:10 that background music and gameplay sync up felt so good
"What is this subgenre of human and how can I stay as far away as possible?"
Bars.
This is the fourth review where "masterpiece" was spoken. I love it.
Sonic gens: the same thing where every change is either an improvement or unnecessary but still good in itself. 10/10
Shadow gens: I have nothing bad to say about this one except I want more stages. 10/10
Really hope we get dlc for this.
Ah so I unlocked it without even realising. 😂 I appreciate the knowledge.
I absolutely love your analyses of why the "controversy" about the Sonic Gens changes were completely inane and silly. The writing is so much better.
In the first place this "controversy" was started by non-Sonic fans and it shows. You're pretty cool.
He said exactly what i said about the controversy its a kids game first and foremost if you want lewd theres plenty of websites for that 😂
15:29 I personally never had that issue. Honestly provided these characters have "matured" for a while in all these stories, I can live with the change. I honestly found the whole fangirl thing a bit annoying at worst and sometimes funny at best.
Like the Boom Cartoon showed it the best way I liked it:
She still does like Sonic it's just more subtle, and her character is just more than a fangirl.
57:13 It is accessible I found it in the play station store it’s free to download them it’s added to the menu
18:09 also he smirks, showing the less angry side of his character
@@yoursonisold8743 In the comics it's mostly really cool, just in these games it can be corny like sonic's "WITHOUT THE TIME STONES?"
@@yoursonisold8743 it's the delivery and comedic timing, and the time stones being such a random thing that's never brought up
@@borederlands5387 I mean considering they seemingly couldn't change the cutscene lengths or the dialogue timings, there were only so many places they could slot the time stones reference into.
3:15 wow that’s a really good comparison. This is a TH-camr opinion that I’m happy to steal
FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for this, Pup 😂
Great job Pup! Great review ❤
I can't wait to play it myself. And this was a really comprehensive and thought out review. Thanks man
After playing shadow generations i can tell you that frontiers 2 is gonna be epic ( if they don’t do another lost world and ditch the entire formula )
Splitting them up like that is much appreciated for me personally.
i cant belive it someone else who doesnt hate the rewrite of gens
52:17 Ain't no way he just called an eagle a pigeon 😭
Hell no. Knuckles being reduced to a punching bag at the hands of someone like “Amy” is embarrassing to his character. I’m glad it got removed
@@rickyronny4019 how do you feel about her the facepalm being removed in that case?
@ that’s exactly what I been saying. Knuckles getting smacked around like that by Amy of all people embarrassing and a stain on his reputation
@@snazzydrew it’s fine imo, it doesn’t paint Amy as an obsessive creep and Sonic as a dismissive jerk
Im so glad this game is out. It was so good!
The slide is actually required once in the harder purple challenge acts in the doom zone
That's what I've been saying
47:57 these symbols unlock the black moon’s eyes, so you can enter into the final boss
But outside of that, the game present Shadow in ways that combine his 2 iterations in a way that doesn't make sense, especially with how prologue portrayed it, and in the end it feels like a character regression to his SA2 character, completely negating what he became in Shadow 05 and Sonic 06, and it didn't expand on the new ideas that were brought to the table
tl;dr: Shadow has evolved to have 2 distincts versions since SA2, Dark Beginnings added nuance to this evolution while planting new seeds to his character, and the game both contradicts the prologue, and presents Shadow in weird blend of his 2 versions that doesn't make sense, to eventually reset him back to square one and negating his character growth, and not expending on the new aspects of his character Dark Beginnings had set up.
The reason why the Drop Dash isn't usable outside of main stages is because they made it a skill instead of a natural part of the moveset...on CLASSIC Sonic. On Modern Sonic it IS NOT a skill, it is actually added to the moveset. No idea why that is tbh.
Let's call it for what it is: Shadow Generations (and Sonic is also here).
I'd like to see a Rush style game that can take what works from Shadow's 2D stages and build on them. This is in addition to a separate FULLY 3D game and classic style 2D game.
I think we have what could be a fun separate playstyle, but it just needs to be recontextualised.

This is the only sonic game I haven't regretted buting day one. Then again I've only bought 4 but whatever.
7:12 actually you can use legacy controls for shadow generations as well

I love sonic x shadow generations it was really awesome and badass.
Thank you for adressing the thing about Amy, just pointing out what they changed and whether you like it or not is fine but some people got waaay too angry about it i feel
though i will say i personally do like amy as less "head empty" but thats just my taste (my fav amys is are the ones written by evan stanley and ian muchler (hope i didnt butcher that name))
fantastic overview of the game!! i expected a bit more of a zoom in on individual hub world dialogues between characters but that would be.. quite a lot to get into so i get it haha
will probably come back to this video as just one of those things i put on in the background while drawing cuz it was a joy to listen to your thoughts
Can’t believe I got a spoiler for Spider Man 2 in a Sonic video 😢😂great video anyway, first time viewer! Really in-depth.
I'm sorry!! I gotta get better with this. I accidentally spoiled Cowboy Bebop in my Dark Beginnings video.
It took about 4 hours to beat, and this review is 1/4 of that xD
But indeed, it is such a great game!
I personally do NOT think Karen did a bad job in Shadow, She sounds fine.
I always liked the more bratty and teasing side of Rouge, I thought her “whatever” line delivery was a perfect gag and showed how Rouge, while frustrated with Shadow, knows he’ll pull through in the end
"Wheres the rest of my island?"
Classic Sonic looking down at his tummy.
The worst of the chsnges in my opinion. I've gotten over Amy.
Great review sonic x shadow generations it’s fantastic
Sonic Generations having more references in the rewrite is so funny to me in the discussions because people arguing that Sonic and friends would just see Green Hill and Chemical Plant as places they just went to with no special recollection is just funny because I doubt the writers had a deep philosophy of showing that Sonic and friends have MANYYYY adventures we don't know. Nah it's because Sonic Generations was stuck in the meta era of treating Sonic as just a kids franchise
He didnt say this, but you can turn lives back on in generations
4. Story has been rewritten
5. Classics basic spindash as well as his quick spindash and drop dash have been given a boost in power.
6. Drop dash is a skill equippable for classic sonic. Modern sonic was coded with it.
7. New bugs got added. Oops. Lol
Robbie Daymond and Stephanie Sheh absolutely killed it! 🤩
Shadow Generations …. I was not prepared for hard they would cook with this title.
And one thing that this game did that I cannot praise enough, is showing that the boost has never been an issue in any of the games but it was just poor level design and implementation (like in forces and somewhat in frontiers), and that it absolutely can work in an open 3D space.
i heard that in sonic generation portion, you can switch to the kind of controls shadow's portion has, but that's just what i heard
26:13 The good part
Mmmm... I think being married to Rouge the Bat is probably like a Husbands of River Song situation
She probably just wants to get something from you, and I'd bet you're not even the only one!
...
The camera angles in the 2D stages reminded me a lot of Sonic Rivals on PSP, which I seem to remember having a lot of little cinematic movements during gameplay.
How dare you underestimate my marriage, and compare my wife to that mid Christmas special.
Pup do you wish you could still homing attack without jumping in shadow gens ? I really liked that in frontiers and miss it
It really astonishes me that one of the main points the haters have about Amy getting ruined is that she doesn't clown on Knuckles, the OTHER character everyone was complaining was ruined in the 2010
I only have 3 issues with this game.
With IDW being canon, it’s weird to think that because of this games time placement… shadow goes from this game to the Metal Virus arc and beyond.
