You should get into aged Armagnac(particularly cask strength) ! Such an underrated spirit with tons of complexity that rivals some of the best whiskeys you can find!
I wondered if this was going to be your highest rated bourbon, and was glad you stated that in the title.
Got to try this bottle when Bill was in Nashville and have never related to every. single. word. of a video more. It’s a masterpiece in the way that almost no other bourbons are. Dangit Bill and dangit Heaven Hill!

Matt I am in complete agreement with you on this one. I have had everything from BTAC to King of Kentucky to dusties and everything that's supposed to be the best. When I tried Heaven Hill 17 I was beyond belief at how good it was. It is by far the best thing I have ever had.
I've been wanting a bottle of this along with the 17-year BIB Old Fitzgerald. Those two would set me back well over $2,000. So yea, nope. Dammit. But a 9.7 makes me want to find a restaurant that might have it. Maybe I can get a 1-oz pour for $100. Glad you were able to try it. I love Heaven Hill products.
I've seen pours for less than that.
I was able to try it a while ago. It really was amazing and special beyond anything I've tried including the van winkles (20, 15, 12, 10)
You have fantastic reading retention. You remember all the candy wrappers of every candy you’ve ever tasted. So it’s an issue of motivation. And reward.

Cracked one open at a whiskey gathering we had a month ago. I must say it was stunning. One of our members provided a Russell's 13 and a blind was in order. Personally I picked the HH17 over the Russell's but it sure held its own. Need to do HH17 vs some BTAC or that Rare Hare 🤔
Kentucky Owl Batch 9 beat all the BTAC stuff and was undefeated.

A bar near me does a "break-even" bottle where they sell pours of rare spirits at-cost, and I waited for weeks for them to put the Heaven Hill 17 up... Then I got COVID and missed it. 😫

Just tried a pour at a bar, I thought it was very good, but to our surprise, we had ORVW 10 year following and we all agreed that while the heaven hill 17 was more unique and interesting, the ORVW 10 was overall better tasting and more enjoyable

I hide my bottle in a closet. It’s the only bottle I don’t openly share with friends and family. Glad you rated it so high, it deserves it. HH is ramping up to take on BTAC.

One of my favorite pours is Parkers Heritage 10 year heavy char.... I am assuming I would be a huge fan of this... I'll pay for a pour of this if I can find it.
To this day, best bourbon I've had. I've tasted it more than 1 bottle, excited to see what comes next.

I was lucky to get a bottle and reviewed it on my channel when it came out and it’s amazing it’s the best bourbon I’ve ever tasted hands down. I haven’t gotten anything else this year close so my 2022 bourbon of the year is going to be a contest for 2nd place haha

I was on Washington/Bedford (in Brooklyn) and they wanted $70 for Eagle Rare.
Some Brooklyn stores are even worse.

Puts me in mind of the time way back in 2011 when I saw two Old Rip "dumpies", a 10 and 15 year, at my local store. I didn't know a lot about bourbon then and passed them by 'cuz they seemed pricey, around $80-$100. O-my-God! I've been kicking myself (figuratively) ever since 😞.

Matt, when you reviewed the KO batch 9 it beat everything it went up against, but you didn’t have your scoring system in place at the time, so if you were to guess, does KO batch 9 make it into the 9s of your scoring?

I need to score Owl 9. I haven't had it in quite some time but I'd think it would be in the low 9's. Pretty sure the HH 17 is on a different level.

Part of me wants to say HH because of how amazing it is and recency bias. Plus I know that the bottle will be the same as the sample I had. The other part of me says King of Kentucky because it has been my #1 Unicorn since tasting it at your house and it is my favorite bourbon of all time.....buuuuut they are Single Barrels....what if I got one that wasn't as special?? I can't decide. That would be an amazing choice to have to make, lol.

What would you consider to be better bourbons from the past few years?
for me personally the Heaven Hill 24 yo that sold through single cask nation is my fave from past few years, even though the abv is significantly lower than this one. I'm also a Scotch guy that very much enjoys bourbon so I can't compare it to every allocated bourbon major release of the past few years, but for enjoyment it's pretty high up. It deserves high scores, but for me didn't offer anything completely unique to warrant a near perfect score. Again, just me and how I judge whiskies. Cheers!
