    I was pre diabetic, inflamed and overweight...I started fasting 6 months ago, a mix 16:8 and more recently OMAD together with a ketogenic diet...My latest blood tests show that I'm no longer at risk of diabetes, I've lost 42Ibs and 7% body fat, I feel better than I have in years and fit into clothes that I had planned to give to charity (I'll donate my XXXLs instead)

    Started fasting in 1979. Thanks for the science! I don't get sick; no colds or flu. No old people ailments. No pain anywhere. People say I look like I'm in my 40's. Wearing sizes I wore as a teen. I don't get tired. Keeping up with the 21 year old hiking. Blessed to have been raised on a farm and yes, I've eaten clean my whole life. Managed my life in a low stress way, haha, self employed; no job since 1978. Fasting is one of the most amazing tools for the human race.

    I mix it up, daily, alternate day, 72 hours once a year, it's all good!!

    Eliminating the munching in front of the TV after dinner, huge benefit. Eating real whole foods, just don't crave the carbage anymore. Made beef bone broth from neck bones and femur bones. The meat from the neck bones is tender and delicious. Made chicken broth as well. Making time for bone broth took a small effort at first, now it is routine. Having a cup of broth gives me plenty of salt and nutritional benefits.

    We were told fasting was bad for years telling us that "your metabolism will permanently slow down if you starve your body".

    • @annbrown3037
      @annbrown3037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do begin to get into diminishing returns re : metabolic rate at around the 20 day mark of a hard fast (nil by mouth or even just water) That's just your body adjusting to what it perceives as prolonged deprivation...trying to keep you alive a bit longer.
      Slowed metabolism might be desirable in some instances and prolonged fasts have shown beneficial results for some chronic conditions.
      But for most of us, intermittent or 3-5 day fasts are ample for every day maintenance.

    • @Frank087
      @Frank087 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. Metabolic rate is dynamic and actually adjusts to the given parameters. What can slow it down is when specific counter-regulatory hormones are unable to function properly do to a hormonal imbalance such as insulin resistance

      Mark Meyer : I'm afraid I don't remember precisely. But I can say that Dr Jason Fung (YT) speaks at length regards fasting, it's benefits and draw backs. I'm about 80% sure it same from him.
      Dr Fung also explains how to do extended fasts safely. I would recommend supervision/ advice for an extended fast. You can run into all sorts of problems (You're starving yourself after all) not least of which is 're-feeding' which cn be tricky.

    This is how I started and am progressing. If you are one of those who does 3 or 4 day fast, good for you. But I don't give a rat's rip. I started with LC for about 3 weeks eating 3 meals a day. Two or three snacks and was doing well. I started at 9 hours then moved up to 12 for 6 weeks. I was eating two meals with snacks. I have worked up to 18/6 and my progress began improving. Three weeks ago I stopped any snacks between meals. I have dropped 10 pounds in those 3 weeks. I did a 23 hour fast yesterday. Why not 24? Simple. My body, MY BODY, told me to eat. This morning my fasting BG was 91. This is the first time my fasting BG has been below 130 since I started testing regular 6 months ago.
    And one day does not a trend make, but its a start. My plan is to do this day fast twice a month and see the results.
    I Po-Pooed IF but am a firm believer. My waist has dropped from a tight 44 to a loose 42. But the biggest loss has come from the measurement at my belly button. That has gone from 55 to 45. That is 10 flipping inches! My goal is my waist and belly button measurement to be the same.
    But I recognize I did not get in this position overnight and it is going to take time to fix it. Maybe 2 years. But to ME, and I emphasize ME, the progression is working. I do not crave sweet and carbs. I do not have "Cheat" days. If there is a food I am unsure about, I burn BG strips until I know how MY body reacts to it. If the food makes my BG rise within 3 hours, no more.
    I have become a fasting acolyte. People I have talked to who tried and failed look at me in disbelief when I tell them I started with 9 hours. And to me, if that's what you can do, and are consistent with it, and then move up to 10, 11, then 12 its better than trying to start with 12, failing then giving up.
    Try 12. If it works for YOU, great. But if not, try 9.
    Thanks for this channel and the work you do.

    I moved up to 18 hours in stages , first be on your Keto or carnivore diet for about a month then do 12 hours then 14 16 then 18. I like 18 because I do an “ eating window “ of 6 hours say from 10 am to 4 pm. But adjust to your comfort level. Try out different routines to suit your daily work and rest . Since I am semi retired and work from home I can be flexible. Also don’t be hard on yourself if 16 hours is all you can do that’s fine, but I am betting you will feel soooo much better that you will be amazed at what fasting does for you !

    In August, I tested my blood sugar level and for the first time ever, my fasting blood sugar was over 120. I've been significantly overweight for the majority of my life but I believe good genetics protected me from many of the diseases attributed to obesity.......until now. I am not a fan of medication when there are nutritional ways to correct the problem. This requires a lifestyle change both in eating and activity level. The information in your videos has given me the knowledge, support and confidence I needed and I began implementing your suggestions regarding intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet. I am so grateful for your dedication to provide information to people who are truly looking for a means to improve their overall health. It's been almost two weeks and the biggest surprise is the achiness in my joints (my hands especially) has significantly decreased. My fasting blood sugar readings are now below 100 and I've lost 8 lbs.! I can't thank you enough. Please keep posting your videos. There are so many people that truly need this information.

    One thing that isn't mentioned with regard to intermittent fasting is activity level. I'm very physically active and must eat twice a day (12+/- hours apart), which is when when my body says to EAT. I have no weight left to lose. I'm about 170lbs and 6'2, strong and fit. If I'm not physically active on a given day, my body sends me signals to eat 16+/- hours apart. I eat a carnivore diet.

    I get up at 4 am and have for many years. I never ate anything before noon usually. I do drink coffee and I think that is why I just wasn’t hungry. So I have actually been fasting for years and didn’t realize it. But when I did eat I was eating a ton of carbs and from age 50 to 60 now I had gained 25 pounds and prediabetic with an a1c of 6.9 for a very long time. I finally had to start taking metformin. It only took my a1c to 6.5 for about two years. Now that I am eating keto my last a1c was down to 6.1. And that was only two months of being keto. I will be having it checked again in two months and I am hoping to see a bigger drop in my labs so I can stop the medication. Also have lost 18 pounds in two months. So I am so happy with those results. At 60 years old it is not easy to just diet and lose weight. But changing what I eat has been easy for me and I love it. Thanks for all your information because it has helped me figure this keto eating out.

    After regaining 25 Lbs due to recent stress from pandemic and layoff possibilities, I have come to terms and decided to restart my fasting and carnivore diet this week.
    I can not control the reasons why for pandemic, layoffs but, I CAN control my stress and stress eating.
    My inflammation has returned with vengeance, sleep issues and snoring because of stress eating.
    This past week, I began my carnivore diet of meat, fish and chicken with eggs and bacon...nothing else.
    So far, I dropped @5 Lbs. I need to cut out my diet coke and sweet-N-Low that I use for my morning cups of coffee.
    I'm still working on that. Cut back sodas to almost half of my normal consumption of 6 packs a day. Sweetner also cut in half.
    Wife and I both follow everything you suggest and had NO issues medically from them.
    In fact, only issue we had was having to buy/break out smaller fitting clothes! At our ages, that baggy pants looks aren't for us😁😎

    Fantastic video and information as always. I suggest however you emphasize that being in ketosis is paramount to sustain successful intermittent fasting. If you are not in ketosis, I don’t believe most people can do IR comfortably, especially for 16 or more hours.

    Intermittent fasting benefits👇
    Weight and body fat loss.
    Increased fat burning.
    Lowered blood insulin and sugar levels.
    Possibly reversal of type 2 diabetes.
    Possibly improved mental clarity and concentration.
    Possibly increased energy.
    Possibly increased growth hormone, at least in the short term.

    277lbs on 8/18/2020. Lowered carbs, started lifting heavy, and started fasting. 9/25/2020 I'm currently 253.5lbs. My last A1C (8/30/2020) was 6.2 and that scared me enough to not fall back into old habits. I'm sticking with this and interested in seeing what my A1C is next year.

    De. Berry. Thanks for these videos. As a veterinary microbiologist, there have been some recent developments with the boutique dog food brands that combine a high meat/grain free diet and association with dilated cardiomyopathy. There has been an association (No studies that I am aware of that prove cause and effect) but this has been such a concern that it has gotten attention from the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. While I realize that dogs are not people, I am also aware of the potential for these results to translate to humans. I would think that if you are on a keto diet and going grain free that may (emphasis on MAY) be a cardiac health risk. Thanks, Jeff

    Dr Berry ..I just watched your pod cast with Dr. Saladino and you mentioned that you haven't found a way to cook kidneys. I hope you or your wife see this comment or that it gets to you! As a kid growing up I would ask my mom to make me beef steak and kidney pie every year on my birthday!!! of course in the 60's nobody had heard of carnivore but my mom being English it was something she grew up on. I'll give you the original recipe as I have it and you can adapt it to no crust, no breading ( maybe crushed bacon rinds) and maybe cook it in an instant pot. RECIPE: a ratio of 1/3 prepared chopped kidneys to 2/3's beef steak - cubed. TO taste - onion chopped, salt & pepper, lea & perrin ( worshtershire sauce). Breading. Barely cover with water and simmer about 4 hrs on low. She made it in a pie crust and also after it had boiled it she cooled it then put it in the fridge overnight and took off the excess hardened fat (haha not any more!!). Enjoy as much as I enjoy watching you and your wife on you tube!!

    I’d love to hear Dr. Berry’s take on combining OMAD, periodic full day fasts (5:2) and carnivore. Getting enough carni calories in one sitting for a day is tough, and I’d love to hear thoughts on right timing for OMAD to get the most metabolic and autophagic benefit.
    Been adding raw egg yolks to meat to boost fat content (plus it’s delicious). Hearing other science backed ideas would be great

    I'm 74 hours into a 10 day fast right now! I feel great, I woke up this morning and felt almost high. I ran a mile just to burn off energy! I will say though make sure you are getting electrolytes if you fast more than 5 days. I usually supplement sodium and potassium, magnesium very rarely! If at any point you feel unwell please stop your fast! You can always start another one later :)

    Hi Doc,, im 57 yr male I follow you regularly and have high respect for your knowledge, thank you for posting all these things about our health. My question is I had a heart attack 4 years ago. I have 2 stents in my right artery because of a build-up of blood( to many red b cells from testosterone replacement therapy) not from much plaque. I had been on Cholesterol meds and have recently stop in the past 10 months , I now follow a Kito diet 10 months now and my total cholesterol 203 my LDL 150 and HDL 39. My doctors are screaming at me that my numbers are way too high and want me back on a statins,, I seem to disagree I need your professional opinion about where my numbers are ,, am I in the danger zone as they call.
    Thanks...

    When I was a teenager at one point I was drinking Coca Cola like it was water, and my addiction persisted into my 20s, although not as bad. I was wondering for some time why I didn’t become diabetic, until recently I realized that I wasn’t having breakfast, since I had to wake up early in the morning for high school, and my high school was close enough in distance that I woke up as late as I could (I wouldn’t shower before either). At the time I thought I was being unhealthy for not having breakfast, in fact, they told me this much in high school. Now I know that’s what probably saved me, since I wouldn’t eat from 8 at night to 12 or 1 pm the next day, burning all the unhealthy choices I made before.

    I fast and eat one meal a day but had no hunger but could not lose weight . I went to a calorie calculator counter that enters vitals and found my weight loss calorie amount and below it had a Zig Zag 2 plan approach and it worked. Now I am eating once but alter my calories different days of the week. I finally started to lose weight. It seemed to boost my metabolism fluctuating my intake.

    IF has been great for dropping calories and hence body fat... Appreciate the other benefits too. However, I've now stopped (although I intend to return to it) for a couple of months as I'm wanting to build more muscle... I'm finding that with IF I just can't eat enough, and want to spread my protein intake across a longer period. I love the easy to follow structure though, and will return to it when I want to enter maintenance again.

    • @abumnm
      @abumnm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally need friendly knowledgeable doctor since you are on med. Potentially can become hypo if you fasting. IF good for t2dm. Here's how, on IF day you monitor your bgl initially to see if you bgl goes to low....if it too low you need to break the fast. Next time you may need to lower down/adjust your dm med or insulin on fasting days and eventually even non fasting day till hopefully you can stop it all. Med time can be adjusted to pm if you want... The best is take the med same time everyday since it action is 24h for daily med.
