Every time there's an emotional scene involving children Adam immediately asks if Jay is OK, and that is the kind of healthy male friendship I love to see.
The little scooch over just in case he needs a hug is precious.
FUN FACT: Emily Rudd, who plays NAMI, said that she was extremely nervous about doing the 'Luffy, help me' scene. As a huge One Piece fan herself she knows what that moment means for the story, as well as the fans, thus she didn't want to mess it up. Series creator/author, Eiichiro Oda says it was perfect. 😊
And apparently she was SO relieved she got it on the first take because she was drained
@@DarthFurballI mean to be fair, if you're a one piece fan and you're the actor in one of the most IMPACTFUL scenes in the early series which makes so many people fall for OP? You're gonna put like 500% of your effort into that scene, and clearly it worked.
Her and Luffy's actor rehearsed the scene pretty extensively according to interviews
Jay's breakdown of how OP is immune to stupidity is so spot on. It's just like, "Yeah, this is the world. Deal with it."
You know one of the BEST things about Jay and Adam is the way they take care of each other and check on one another as they are watching stuff, when they know the other might very bothered by what they are watching. I love this little peach family.
Every time Jay is getting super excited and Adam looks at the camera like "He doesn't even know!"
He said 'Jinbei is a fool'. The fishman warlord they talked about is named Jinbei.
Jimbei, no Jinbei.
@@timothywalsh9637 Actually is Jinbe
I just want him ASAP, one of my favorite characters
@@timothywalsh9637 it can be spelled either way (Jimbei is more accurate to how it's pronounced, but Jinbe is a more literal transliteration of how it's spelled in Japanese)
@@LincolnDWard Thanks, I was confused about that
I think you had it backwards. It's not whimsical cloaked in badassery and vengeance...its badassery, trauma, and vengeance cloaked in whimsical.
The whimsy is the candy coating of one piece. It can be thick af at times, but when you get through it, it's the darkest, most moving story I've ever read.
One Piece: You will learn why this man wears a baby costume, and you will cry. 😭
I literally just got to that episode and I SOBBED SO MUCH
@@boonejbrucetfw the flashback starts and you're like "Oda please don't make me have feelings about this dumbass"
senor pink design is the best man. He G.O.A.T
There are so many of these moments throughout the One Piece saga. People who don't want to take on the anime because of the number of episodes are missing out on some of the best worldbuilding and story telling ever.
@@rantingrodent416 I can't believe he keeps doing it!! When i started the journey, i learned quickly that Oda has absolutely zero chill. But then came senor pink, and i thought "no way you can do this". Seven buckets of tears later, "i'm sorry i doubted you, Oda sensei. Please stop hurting me".
"You know, I keep thinking that the group is complete, and then they add people and I go, oh, no, we needed this vibe" THIS. It's genuinely felt like that with every Strawhat introduced despite the fact that the crew has doubled in size by the current chapters. I love the way y'all talk about the characters, these reviews are a highlight of the week for me and your side tangents in this vid are hilarious. My other fav quote from this vid sums up my feelings about OP in general: "It's so unbelievable to me how this shouldn't work and it does. This show's a magic trick, man."
i believe what Jay was trying to articulate is, regardless of the silly elements of the show, the storyline and who well the actors portray it keep the story moving in such a way that you wind up not only sometimes ignoring the silliness, but loving it earnestly as a plot element that SHOULD be stupid, but if you know the story, is ACTUALLY brilliant.
And now you see why theres 1100 episodes of the Anime 😂
I think that's the key word: earnest. One Piece is earnest, whether it's doing comedy or telling a tragic back story. No winks at the camera, no "we know this is kinda silly," it gives equal weight and effort to all of it, asking you to be a kid again and go on an adventure.
You buy it, not really as reality, but as the reality of the world they’ve created.
@1stgenkpopfan646 yes, exactly. 'Telepathic snail phones that you have to feed? With teeth? Sure.'
I love Adam just watching Jay's reactions. Sometimes thats more entertaining than the show itself.
Thats why we watch reaction videos 😊
I love how they set up how important the straw hat is to Lufi so when he puts it on Nami's head it tells you everything you need to know about how he feels about her with no words.
2:23 A little fun fact about Sanji's name. It was originally going to be Naruto which is the main character of Oda's old rival Kishimoto's Naruto. They changed it to Sanji which means 3 o' clock, which also is lunch time.
4:21 Berries/ beli/ beri all points are valid
Nezumi means ocean mouse. It's Oda's play on words.
13:59 Jay... isn' t ready for the Manga and Anime
22:32 as I said you are not READY Jay.
26:40 Oda is a BIG Tom and Jerry fan btw. Looney Tunes is his golden apple of writing. And he makes sure EVERYTHING has a grounded base. Oh btw Oda was 17 when he started this so.... He was technically a kid.
think he started One Peice when he was 19
he started in manga working under someone when he was 17
3 o clock lunch???
That's the best explanation for One Piece ever. It's dumb ... no it's not ... no it's not 😂 I cried
Jay's ongoing surprise love for One Piece live action makes me smile every time I watch one of these reactions. Thank you for the smile and laughter keep it coming.
A common mistake people make while watching this episode, is thinking that Nami is running after the Marines. She is actually running towards the village wanting to warn them knowing that Arlong will attack because they did not make their payment.
Adam’s constant side glance to Jay to make sure he is okay 🥺
Adam waiting for that Jeopardy call back and his delivery was fantastic 😂😂
I love how much Jay has come to love this show, and he's spot on that it really is kind of silly when you stop to think about it... but it just works and wears that silliness on it's sleeve while hitting you with utter badassery, and genuine emotions. And yeah, there is meant to be a sense of whimsy to things, the main reason Oda made Luffy a rubber-boi was so that even in the most tense, serious fight scenes, there would still be at least some small bit of fun and humor because Luffy's fighting style is just so ridiculous.
It’s the seriousness of the silliness that makes it so good.
I absolutely love Nami's scene at the end of this episode. The best part is the actors when they yalk about it still get emotional about it, so happy to see that the actors so invested in their characters and the source material
OPLA's version of "Help Me" is genuinely my favorite adaptation of that moment, and I think most of it comes down to the actors' performances, especially Emily Rudd's.
That is in fact a marine human, who's whole motif is the mouse, but is not a mouse-man
but how are we to know the difference? besides, his name is literally japanese for mouse.
That said, in the One Piece universe, it's not abnormal for people to just have animal features, like Merry just _has_ animal horns, and Nezumi just _has_ whiskers, even if the ears are on the hat.
Oda himself explained this as him never thinking too much about it and just drawing them how he wanted to draw them.
This is not our world. In the world of One Piece, it is possible for a human to have animal characteristics. Besides, even in our world, it is possible to transform one's body to resemble an animal (I remember a man having his teeth cut to resemble those of a feline, having his skin tattooed with spots like a leopard,...). So, who’s to say that Nezumi hasn’t done the same thing with his whiskers. After all, we don't know his past.
For added punage, his name "Nezumi" literally means "Mouse/Rat" in Japanese.
This show is... unapologetically straight up full send live action anime! They commit... and it makes it so beyond easy for me to commit alongside!
It’s also why the Avatar live action is kinda falling short. It’s not embracing the world they live in, it’s almost trying to hide it behind realistic grittiness. The world is as it is. Embrace it and roll with it.
I think one of the main reasons the show works is that it they treat the fans like adults and don't kill everything with explanations or exposition. The story is so good that the silly stuff doesn't even matter.... it's just fun flavor. :)
I tell ya, Nami is QUITE the cardiologist. 😁
*NOTE*: I wrote that before watching THAT moment in the review, but then Adam mentioning it made it even funnier. 🤣🤣🤣
i mean, it was funny, but I can tell I'm missing out on a reference here. Can you fill me in?
@zippomage It's a reference from one of the Jeopardy Masters episodes (can't remember which one specifically offhand though).
I can't think of a single moment of any media released in the last few years that hits harder than "Luffy, help me." "Of course I will."
a few lines from everything everywhere all at once movie hit a little harder for me, but def agree this is up there. i know they following the anime to a T in that scene but i could of done with out the last of course i will (or have the third just done a little different, it just didnt translate well for me into live action, rest of the scene they nailed though
@@jeremiahsealy9211 It did not translate well to you because you just know anime did it better. You are just comparing it to that scene. But if you went on this on your first time it would be a different experience.
Trust me, there are some later moments in One Piece that hit even harder.
Just wait until you learn the story of the Demon Child & the Soul King.
Facts
@@Phanthief95 Nami s my favorite character but the "Until I beat you I won't fall to the ground again" moment is the one that hit me the hardest.
He said Jimbei... Jimbei is a god damn legend
JIMBEI IS A FOOL!
The First Son of the Sea!
love that blue guy
A big trad chad dad.
i completely agree with j about what makes one piece so greate. because they are doing my favorite thing any media does which is starting off with the dumbest premises and bits, and comitting to them and then commiting to them fully taking them completely serius and honoring them until they pay off spectacularly
Legends say Jay is still hunting that boar!
The point about One Piece making seemingly silly and dumb decisions is so real, and only gets more real the further you get into the story. Quite a while after where the live-action leaves off (and I'm being very vague as not to spoil anything), there is a character whose laugh sounds something around the lines of "DERESHISHISHI"... and I first heard it and was like- oh damn, that's weird and silly, dunno why they did that. Two episodes later I was crying my eyes out to the sound of that laugh. The power of amazing writing, right there...
The fucked up thing is, for me, two fairly recent shows have done something to me. No matter how many times I rewatch Arcane, all the pain hits the same. Every rewatch of One Piece does a little bit of that..........but makes me feel ......hope? It's fucking weird. Rewatching stuff is supposed to make you numb to it. Arcane I almost consider PTSD lol. That I love.
You know, I’ve wrestled with the idea of if a Chef subclass should be a Bard or an Artificer. I fill like the Artificer already has that built in crafting for new recipes and transforming drinks and foods into potions and spells…Buuuut a Bard making food a performance is so very good. Turning meal prep into a musical number, especially as your lowering the evil fishman into a boiling pot heated by the fires of vengeance, and seasoned with the spices of justice.
12:01 If you're wondering why, out of all the names int he world, Arlong called his hideout/headquarters 'Arlong Park' - well......just remember the name. And the decor. We don't know yet how many story arcs they'll cover in this show or how much of it, but......well just remember the name Arlong Park, you'll get the answer to 'why' eventually.
4:20 It actually varies, depending on the translation. I’ve seen it spelled “Berry”, “beri”, or even “beli”(because l and r tend to be somewhat interchangeable in japanese. Even the plural tends to vary. In some translations, it’s “berries”, like you’d expect, but in others, the plural is the same as the singular tense.
11:21 Someone else described him (in the introduction to Sanji) as "If Gordon Ramsey and Christian Bale had a baby".
Which opened up a whole debate about whether or not Sanji would respect Gordon Ramsey as a chef - the arguments against it being that Ramsey wastes too much food and yells at women too much for Sanji to respect (pointing out that he yells at men just as much wouldn't change anything).
clicked on this so fast, been wanting to see jay react to the scene, ok just finished, its fun how this show can have you laughing one second to complete emotional gut punch that leaves you speechless
Jay’s explanation of One Piece the end actually encapsulated it perfectly 😂
Jay's perception of One Piece is 100% accurate. It is a profoundly silly story. Any One Piece fan worth their salt will acknowledge how silly and ridiculous it is.
And yet it's also deeply deeply impactful. It's about the realest things there are. Friendship, dreams, family, and freedom.
Not only First, but it says uploaded 15 seconds ago on my screen, with No views so far. I feel like the Flash
Nice
26:47 like all the old people say. creativity is stupid unless it makes money. put the ice cream on the cone-shaped wafer. it looks stupid at first but it works and Made money. better than just putting it in a bowl.
@26:59
About Nezumi ("the guy dressed up as mice"):
His name literally means "rat" (as well as some similar things) and perfectly describes both his appearance as well as his character.
As a marine captain, he should be on the side of the law, yet he is a corrupt rat who covered up most of Arlong's actions in return for money (he probably also feared the superhuman strength of the fishmen, but it was mostly because of the money). He even "worked" for Arlong and seized Nami's treasure so that she wouldn't be able to buy the village from Arlong... just because he got money (30% of the treasure in the manga).
So his appearance is quite fitting for both name and character.
Some versions / translations don't even use the name "Nezumi", they just call him "Captain Rat", he even introduces himself that way.
I find it funny that every single live action viewer immediately identifies him as a MOUSE and not a RAT. I wonder if the costume department considers this a failure...
I really really really love Jay's reaction to this world... It's like what we all felt like the first time.
The way I would describe one piece, is imagine the writer is a kid, but the director and editor are trying to make a serious movie, so they take the kids ideas and put grown up deep thoughtful ideas behind it to make it more serious, and that’s what we end up with.
She knew that if Arlong found out they existed, he would kill them all/or otherwise punish the whole village.
And Nami didn't want anyone else to be punished by Arlong, that's why she lied to everyone.
Jay, absolutely PERFECT description of this fucking show. 😂
25:00 LMAO - you're right!
also - One piece is a comic/manga made by this silly artist named Oda. if you've read it, you know that it's a comedy at heart BUT the characters and their arcs get dark - it's as varied as life is.
I just watched the anime version of these scenes over on Omn1Media's channel. Live or animated, it always makes me cry.
Jay was doing his closing lines but you can tell he was still thinking about that episode. I put One Piece at the top of TV this year but Avatar is second.
It's funny that Adam heard all of the consonants in Jimbei's name. "Tinpei" lol
Jay's description of OP is so on point. It's really seamless when transitioning from comedy to tragedy. It's never jarring. It works.
When you talk of how it should be silly, but it works, Oda has been writing this for 25 years, and it is still getting better!
BTW, the Fishman Warlord's name is Jimbei (Jim-bay), and you may want to remember it in a few years, as he becomes very important in the middle and second half of the story. He is a total badass, and he and Arlong know each other quite well. Arlong hates him, and Jimbei pitties Arlong. Okay, that's a tiny spoiler, but in the grand scheme that's pretty much nothing. All seven of the warlords turn up eventually, and they all have their own unique interactions with the Straw Hats.
And the crazy thing is, One Piece was supposed to be 5 years long for Oda but he had to make it longer because of him introducing the Warlords.
It’s insane how he was able to develop all of them.
The ending scene is just SO good!! I get teary eyed every time.
13:25 Maybe the whiskers are *why* he dresses up like a mouse, similar to how Buggy’s nose is why he dresses up like a clown. It’s to hide the unusual trait.
Jay and Adam have to change the backround to an underground cave base. It is time.
Fun fact! The food WOULDN'T actually fall out of Buggy's neck!
His body still acts and functions as if he was a normal human being, so the food just teleports directly to his stomach.
Well, Kratos did use Mimir like his own personal Google search.
The actor that plays Buggy was the best part of the last season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
The spelling of the currency does vary on translation; because Rs and Ls are a bit interchangeable in Japanese it's either Beri, Berry, Beli or Belly. Beri is what fans commonly use
Not Mouse Person, just guy with ratlike features and a ratlike name (Nezumi means Rat or Mouse) because he's a fecking rat
He said Jinbe (or Jimbei depending on translations), all in good - albeit long - time
Wait til you realize (if you continue the story past the live action) why Arlong designed his place like an amusement park and Oda's writing and foreshadowing will blow your mind.
Same with Arlong mentioning Jinbe.
He was first mentioned as a character in Arlong Park in the manga & later on becomes an incredibly important character in the series.
@@Phanthief95 true. One of the first warlords we hear of so early on.
18:22 this whole interaction and visual almost killed me 😂🤣
I love you guys
Culinary College Bard sounds awesome. Make it kind of like Swords Bard, but, the subclass features are Monk-like with Unarmed attack benefits and anything that would use your Wisdom modifier, use your Charisma modifier instead.
I think Adam has been as excited as us to to see Jay's reaction to this episode.
When the lice action was announced, I had only one stipulation in my mind that would make it great. And that was if we could get a perfect recreation of the manga panel showing Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, and Luffy after promising Nami to help her, and by God, they fking did it!!!😂😂😂
“Yeah I’m fine, I just wanna kill this f*cking fish” is the best character development moment in this series so far
The best part of Luffy as the Hero of this Anime, hes a good person but he only helps when hes asked mostly. Nami asking Luffy for help is a scene that just worked so well here and had me cry but if you see the Anime verson it hit super hard for me. Because he knew she needed help the whole time but she just had too much pride to ask until that very moment, and the hat on top was the chefs kiss because Luffy cherishes that hat as much as hit friendships because Shanks gave him it. So giving her the hat was so symbolic and its what makes you feel it even more in the Anime because here in the live action they didnt hammer it on as much about the hats importance to Luffy. Loved this show love this Anime cant wait to see the rest of the seasons and the last reaction episode boys ❤
This is good, episode 37 is amazing.
Ep37 hits like a freight train.
4:36 as far as how easily this show could have not worked it goes 10X as much for the anime. On paper it sounds so damn ridiculous it really is a barrier for entry but once you experience it it is magical and wholly unique. Greatest story ever told.
Someone recently made a video for TH-cam talking about how the most ridiculous concepts somehow manage to work the best as long as you find ways to make it work. Usually by making it as fun for everyone involved, including the viewer, as possible. But sometimes, even the silliest concepts can still be made enjoyable when you don’t force it to be serious. One Piece is one of those series where being serious can come with a natural flow rather than being forced because we see everyone, including the characters and the cast and crew behind them, are typically having fun in some way, which helps the viewers have fun and enjoy them too. OPLA, we even get to see behind the scenes and promotional stuff involving the actors and they all seem to be enjoying their involvement in the series and working together, so they have great chemistry which helps the performances.
(Admittedly, I mainly watched that video because it was discussing about how a series about a guy being reborn as a sentient vending machine in a new world managed to work as a concept despite sounding incredibly ridiculous.)
Something I find funny is that whenever a character/ is on screen, the music may contain leitmotif that said character is known for/ has been associated with, like Buggy's theme plays in whatever music is playing anytime something related to him is on screen, same for other characters, Buggy's is most noticeable, and it's easier to here in Episode 8 for other characters
Jinbei is what they said around 16:53 he's one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea they were talking about and a Fishman.
Thanks for sticking with this series, guys!
As others have said: Yes, Captain Nezumi is indeed just a human with a rat motif. There are multiple characters like that throughout the story. It fits with his name (which means 'mouse' or 'rat') and his character, when you consider that he's on the take from Arlong.
Also, the name of the fishman who's a new Warlord of the Sea is Jimbei (pronounced like "JEEM-bay"). Again, the name is significant in Japanese: It's their word for 'whale shark'.
The music in this episode is astounding
It's sooo wild its border line goofy... but its so sincere and fun you get invested. ❤
Arlong is a bad guy. But like many bad guys in One Piece, he has reasons to be this way. We can understand these reasons without accepting the consequences. Arlong makes his choices. But without his past, his present might be different. One Piece is complex, much more than the Manichean vision of good and evil.
Exactly. From Arlong, we touch on the theme of racism in the world of One Piece since he has a hatred of humans.
I don't get why Adam seems to think of whimsy and badassery are some sort of contradictory things ("Whimsy? It's badass!", "I mean I guess it can be whimsy... Just cloaked in a layer of badassery." Paraprashed, but still). They're not opposites. They mix and go hand in hand, and one piece is proof of that
I was 2nd. I literally just searched one piece episode 7 reaction to find one that haven't watched n I found this was right there what timing
Jay getting on the vengeance train with Adam, let's go!
I find it very interesting that Jay brought up some of the design choices feeling childish. Oda actually started writing One Piece when he was around 19. One of the reasons I became so heavily invested was you can tell when reading it how much Oda has matured as both a writer and as a person, all without retconning those early choices. Truly masterful.
Welcome to pReview'd, we have an orchard and a diamond mine
Also neat that this episode had an actual orchard!
16:51 Jimbe. Don’t worry, we won’t be seeing him for a *long* time, unless they introduce him early
Episode 7, opens with a disembodied clown head singing a sea shanty about someone’s ass, closes with trauma and self harm. Somehow manages to be amazing. You’re right this show is an amazing paradox.
I love that this show fully embraces the silly
Time to call DAVE THE DIVER and get rid of Arlong!
Random fun fact: the fishman with the huge lips is called Chu, which is also the japanese onomatopoeia for a kiss sound
Whismy and Badass Both are True. btw Luffy is sometimes the Most Badass Character you'll sew
*Jay hunts a boar with just his bare hands and grit.*
PATREON TIER UNLOCKED.
The fishman who is one of the seven Warlords is named Jinbei.
Jimbei, not Jinbei.
@@timothywalsh9637It’s actually spelled Jinbe. Even his statue in Japan is spelled this way.
The LA is soo good 😊
And the manga is even better!
The Manga is THE greatest work of literary fiction of our generation.
@@banonKING Actually agree. It's my favorite story of all time even. Somewhere around Wano it managed to pass Discworld.

I don’t wanna brag.
But this is the first time I’ve ever been the 1,000th like … sooooo … 😂
Seriously you guys get me so emotional with your reactions.
20:00 Adam committing to the bit.
16:53 Arlong said Jinbe. Like Mihawk, he’s one of the Seven Warlords who goes by the badass moniker of “First Son of the Sea”.
He’s a Fishman like Arlong (more specifically a whale shark Fishman) who also has a personal history with him & you should remember his name because he’s an incredibly important character in the series.
The crying scene with nami is THE scene of the season. It gives me chills everytime
I feel like this part of the live action was a little rushed and lacks some of the impact of the animated show, but it's still pretty damn good.
Cardiologist! I laughed so hard. What a callback! I jumped out of my chair laughing and applauding. Absolutely brilliant!
The 'inferior dog to an inferior master' is a character you won't have to worry about for a while. Jinbe is one of those characters who won't really enter the picture until several seasons down the (grand) line. The author of One Piece does a lot of foreshadowing and worldbuilding in his story, but it isn't rare for him to take a decade to come back on something he laid the groundwork for. It simultaneously makes his work feel huge and believable, and drives his fans crazy because we never know what is foreshadowing, and what is just One Piece eccentricity.
did Y'all make something different with your sound editing? the base was really high this time around?
Welcome to One Piece Jay!!!😂
15:38 Um....I understand where you're coming from but....tiny spoiler alert - don't call Arlong a fish. Or any other fishman a fish. There's a reason why Arlong got mad when Luffy called him that......Luffy didn't know, you don't either, it'[s ok but.....don't call fishmen fish.
Jay being a Dad now makes me wonder how he will react to season three of Star Wars: Da Dad Batch.
The warlord fishman he was referring to is named Jinbei but I highly doubt you’ll ever see him in the live action so no worries. Like no chance in hell they ever get to him.
To me, the actor playing Sanji looks like a young Christian Bale.
27:44 omg. I kept getting flashbacks to The Magicians😂 All the discussion about whimsy and whimsy cloaked in vengeance with swords (and sometimes knives)
I don't believe Nami is chasing after the Marines. She's heading to her village, because she knows what's about to go down.
