Hello Leslie I have a true short description story I captured on video, a short Brief Encounter. The newly healthy three fledglings learning to pickup a seed or peanuts crumbs pieces SWEETGERL- BB. OVER 6 TIMES PER DAY ARRIVE TO FEED on the open deck. I've crushed up peanuts. As I've observed the mother bird will do that for them. Right size to put in the fleshling's mouth beak. THERE'S LARGER PEANUTS in the Shell unsalted. What I've observed is very interesting, how I've been able to get into a close up perspective window of their behavior while they're in the fledgling mother father feathered learning to eat & fly mode. The mother gave one large serious scream & one fledgling froze in motion as in a relaxed position 3 minutes on the deck near the crushed peanuts 🥜. The MERLIN 4 FLEDGLINGS SQUAWKING are new to this area nesting near the same 700 feet away in an other area swooped by. The lesson was learned. B B gave the call. It was a large active day for myself observing a family of Bluejays. Thanks Lesley and friends of free feathered fliers. NS CANADA 🇨🇦 Blue 💙
When I was about 8 y/o, I was sitting under our backyard tree eating sunflower seeds, and watching this Blue Jay hop around from limb to limb. He was watching me too. When I realized what he was doing it made me laugh. I talked to him…”you want some”? I held my hand up, flat, with a few seeds…offering him some seeds. I was actually teasing him, never dreaming he’d take me up on my offer. But he came to the lowest limb, cocking his head this way and that. In the blink of an eye, he swooped down without stopping, grabbed a seed straight out of my hand…and lit back on the lowest branch. I sat there frozen, mouth hanging open, shocked and wondering it that actually just happened. I eventually jumped up and ran to tell my mom, and anyone else who’d listen. To me, it was a miracle.
I could pick up wild birds as a child. We were not yet a threat to the animals. It is possible to get back to this as the wonderful lady who makes these videos has shown. I am not there yet, although I am with squirrels. I can call any wild squirrel to me and hand feed them and they will also jump in my lap.
I have about 12 Blue Jays who visit my feeder daily. They even bring their offspring like a baby bird daycare every breeding season. I think I have heard just about every call they make. If I dont put out peanuts early in the morning, they do loud calls by my window.
You are so lucky to have that many Blue Jay's! Mine (usually only one - then more may join in) to alert me at my window in the morning. Also have a Mockingbird that comes before the Blue Jay. Stephanie
As I’ve written for some months back, I grew up with Blue Jays when I was young. When the winters were terribly cold and snowy, they’d stay in our garage with a heater until the weather got warmer. I remember we had up to fifteen at a time. We had small windows so they could come and go as they pleased. And they loved our peanuts. Where I live now, there aren’t Blue Jays but Magpies which are far from trusting humans. I miss Blue Jays but I have great memories of them taking peanuts from my hand and them landing on my head to take the peanut I had placed there. They’re the most beautiful birds in the world and the smartest too, IMO ♥️
That is awesome. I'm working to get to that point with my local blues. Almost all of them are still extremely cautious. Even when they watch me put out some food specifically for them!
I love my BLUEJAYS here in flint MICHIGAN they are beautiful and very smart and loud but I love it I love all the birds that come to my tree just awesome GOD BLESS THE BIRDS.
There was a blue jay that looked at me and made a hawk scream. They weren't too pleased that I didn't run away, and shortly flew off. It was very amusing.
As I started this video, a bluejay flew up to collect peanuts right outside my window. Such humorous company! Thank you for inspiring the birder in each of us. 💓
I have been having a family of 6 visiting the last 2 years. I cannot tell them apart. However, if I forgot to toss out peanuts, one will sit in the Rose of Sharon calling until I toss out a few handfuls. I love how they impersonate the hawks. They also have peanut eating contests with the 4 crows that hang around too.
Hi Lesley, I was always fascinated by how the jays will announce any sort of danger. I’ve been sitting in the woods and heard the jay warn of the approach of another human being long before I was aware of that person’s presence.
I loved learning that all Blue Jays don't look the same. I never knew that their markings can vary between them. It was really interesting. Thank you for the awesome lesson and happy birding.
Bluejays were my Grandfather's favorite bird and that's how I've come to love them. This video was a good lesson. My favorite Bluejay I call " fussy boy". Indeed he can be 🐝 VERY FUSSY 😳
What a beautiful connection. I love it and I love your Fussy boy. I have a fussy boy too, Feisty Jay. He doesn't mind letting me know when a peanut isn't up to par. Hahah
Besides their gorgeous blue color and feathers, and their majestic crowns, I always thought of bluejays as the bullies of the neighborhood! Thank you for explaining that these birds are so much more than that. There was so much for me to learn here, I enjoyed the lessons! You've helped me to appreciate these blue beauties 💙🐦✌️
Thanks Miss Nerd and maybe Mr Nerd for making a gloomy day a little brighter. So much knowledge and work you put into these videos is outstanding. I love my jays and there personalities
I was going to comment on that very same observation Gerhard, but you expressed my thoughts more eloquently! I live in Southern New England and have noticed the Blue Jays calls and cries in mid to late August as a harbinger to fall. I thought maybe it was just me thinking this way, glad you noticed too! ✌️💙🐦
I have a whole flock of blue jays in my area that are very vocal and I have learned to use their calls as a way to determine if there are any crows or birds of prey in the area. I usually hear their usual call over a hawk call, but they're always very vocal when flying. My dad loves to watch them because he loves how beautiful their feathers are and he's found some on the ground that he has brought to me. I'm not home much due to student teaching, so I'm not able to watch them as much as I use to.
Great video. I see Blue Jays quite often on nature hikes in Southern Ontario. They are beautiful birds. I never realized they had so many different calls. Thanks for sharing.
I have a pair on my property. At first I didn't know if it was two males or a male & female. Well.....just this morning I found out!! The male was feeding the female in a tree right next to all my feeders. I watched as they were playing, jumping from one branch to another, then they both stopped and he fed her. Thanks to you Lesley, I knew this was a male feeding his mate!! I hope they build a nest in this tree, but I have several trees they can choose from on my property. Loved the video!! ❤🌻
Beautiful. I see alot of blue Jays and cardinals in the early spring , I watch them every morning while drinking my coffee I have some morning doves making nests in my evergreens in my backyard. Thanks for the videos ❣️❣️
I just love the soundI s the Blue Jays make. I'm in a small neighborhood with a small yard, but I attract all of the nearby jays with up to a dozen or more blue jays in my trees taking turns taking peanuts from my blue jay feeder. I've never seen so many in such a small space, and even had 5 sitting on the feeder at the same time! Thanks to your blue jay videos, I started noticing the differences of the blue jays. I was amazed at how you could identify Blue and other jays with just a glance. Using your tips, it has become fairly obvious which jay I am looking at in that moment. It is so cool. Thank you again for your dedication and sharing :)
I love watching you feeding! More please! I hate that as I age, my eyes have gotten far less dependable. I rely a lot on song but sure couldn't tell individuals apart like you can. Thank you for another great vid!
I loved this video! Thank you! I liked the beautiful quote in the beginning from Audubon. Blue Jays are very graceful and gorgeous in flight. As always, all of your footage was outstanding! Two Blue Jays are building a nest in a tree across the street from my house, and another two are nesting somewhere behind the house. There are quite a bit of squabbles and squeaky gate calls when the two pairs meet at the bird feeder 😄 They are very entertaining! Also, I just saw a Blue Jay give its mate a food offering from the bird feeder. :-) Spring is such a special time to birdwatch!
Oh my goodness you are in for a treat this Spring with having two so close by like that. It's so funny how they behave with each other when at food sources that border their spaces. Have fun 🥰❤🐦
I love Blue Jays, they are so beautiful to look at. I love their beautiful patterns and calls. Thanks to you Lesley, now I feed them peanuts in the shell. They will call for food at my balcony! Beautiful creatures!
I have a new appreciation for Blue Jays thanks in part to your videos. I started putting peanuts in the shell on my trays - and it didn’t take long for the Blue Jays to find them. Today I saw one perched on the rod, his head tilting back and forth looking me in the eye. The tray needed more peanuts. 😂. You are a wonderful ambassador for them.
I was surprised by your range map, since I grew up with what I thought were blue jays in northern Arizona. I checked again, and found they were Stellar’s jays. Not quite so colorful but equally charming. Thanks for the video!
I grew up in San Diego and we had blue jays there. I remember one year when I was a young mother we hid Easter eggs outdoors. ( It's always good weather in San Diego. 😉 ) The jays helped themselves to the eggs before the kids found them! I live in the Vancouver area in BC now. We don't have blue jays here but we do have Stellar Jays!
I always associate blue jays with the arrival of true spring. That and they will tell you when they don't want you in their space. So our late dog and I would try to not walk by their trees during the spring. They're pretty awesome. 💙💙💙🐦🐦🐦
hi Leslie. I enjoyed the tale of the 'pebble hiding' jay tricking the youngster. im also impressed with the friendships youve developed with these birds. we have lots of them here in the pocono mountains, they love the shelled peanuts we put out for them! thanks for a lovely look at these majestic birds!
We've got Scrub & Steller's here in the Willamette valley 💙 your channel has encouraged me to get to know my local feathered friends even better & I'm so grateful 🐦
I found your channel last night. The first three videos that were suggested happened to be my three favorite birds! Crow, Blue Jay and Cardinal. I feed all of them every day. My crows are my favorites although I will say that the Blue Jays are the bravest. The Blue Jays sure love the dry cat food on my porch and visit me before hopping over to the bowl to grab a nugget. I was amazed to see them landing on your hands! You truly are gifted and must be pure of heart because animals can detect that. When I was a child, I could pick up wild animals including birds. I no longer have this gift.
Again, I must say how much I love their harsh calls. Living near a woods and meadow as a child placed them in my little file of things that remind me of home. I have a small group of jays near my home now that visit my feeders. Before I was hesitant to put out any peanuts because of the squirrels but I'm currently working on that...Lol! I can't wait to see them in my yard again.
Gurgle-bob?! I love it! Pebble hiding?!? Awesome! Tossing peanuts to the kids? Too cute! Bird portraits? Admirable! This entire video radiates your bird passion with candid, insightful and gorgeous narrated videography. I was just thinking about how hard editing is because I feel like I'm loosing credit for all the hard work I'm editing out. Your video reminds me that distilling the years of hours and hours of experience is what creates stronger connections. I appreciate your time, am inspired by your productions and humbled by your experiences reminding me that being true to ourselves is beautiful. Great team work Lesley and Jamie!
I'm stuck for words. The appreciation and understanding from you of what it takes to produce these types of videos is beautiful. From myself and Jamie, thank you for all you said. ❤ It is a deep commitment rooted in a true admiration and love for those birds. They are all so wonderous and unique. There is a story waiting to be told for each. Keep striving for what you want to achieve from your bird videos. 👍🥰🐦
@@LesleytheBirdNerd Thank you for your lovely reply! You are very welcome. I want to "heart" your reply...if I could figure out how - lol. Just watched your "Birdwatching can help on a Deeper level" video and kept saying "YES!" during the whole thing. Happy journeying.
It was so great to see a new Bluejay video! They are also one of my favorites. You've always mentioned about the squeaky gate call. Here in Colorado I've not heard that. I have heard this one call that you've not mentioned. It's difficult to describe it. It's seems like they're very happy when they do this one. It's like diddly doop, diddly doop! HA 🤣 Laughing It's very melodious.
Another good class from Lesley. Our blue jays have been making more songs lately. They definitely aren’t shy to interact, often take the lead to remind us that the feeder is empty.
They are beautiful birds...When I lived where I fed critters...I'd throw a bag of peanuts in the shell on the ground and come back inside, then turn around and watch the blue ground!
Love this video. It's so interesting how they use their pouch. I only see blue Jay's on occasion. Yesterday and today they have been here quite a bit. We put some bla black oil sunflower seeds in the feeder. But they were digging in the dirt around it.
Where I see the family Blue Jays here on my deck arrived to feed. I added to a small battery operated plastic blue jay toy in the mix. so I perched it near the crushed peanuts and peanuts with a windmill to keep the pigeons away from gobbling up the fledgling's peanuts. I noticed the small fledgling blue jay enjoyed over 3 minutes to observe this little plastic blue jay and offered it peanuts. I thought that was so interesting and sweet. Happy to see it, to share it with you.
You're at the campground and a hot day our campsite had a lot of trees that gave enough shade, we busted open a bag of peanuts and started throwing one then two and eventually a handful of peanuts to the ground, we enjoyed watching the Blue Jays and crackles fight to seek for the peanuts we threw to the Earth, I noticed that the crackles weren't really eating the peanuts oh maybe one or two but basically they were trying to make it difficult for the Blue Jays but the Blue Jays were much smarter and much quicker. Really enjoyed watching them it was such a treat.
I have 2 pair that visit my feeders daily. If they don’t see any peanuts out they let me know! I’ll get some and throw them out and they will come down and get them. Love having them around.
Lesley your video and commentary are superb.I am going to try and listen for the gurgle-bob and the squeaky-gate vocalizations in order to ascertain gender in Blue Jays.Thank you for this excellent information.
My husband once watched a jay picking thru peanuts in the shell. The bluejay picked up 17 , giving each one a shake, putting it down. We've always wondered what the criteria was ! What was it listening/looking for in a peanut? The 17th was the one the jay took . Just so interesting to observe!
Hahaha I know hey. Makes you wonder what goes through their mind as they make their deciosn because there is definitley something going on in there. Too cute 🥰🐦
I bet they're probably really well-fed and they can afford to be real picky and selective. Kind of like their version of walking through the produce aisle and picking everything up and looking at it and not buying anything.
@@jiveturkey9993 They never cease to be interesting to observe, do they ? 🙂🐦 Nature is amazing. I am glad you put in your 2 cents on the topic. Thanks! 👋
Growing up in south Florida in the 80s one of my favorite sights was the bluejays that would eat in our yard complimented and contrasted with the cardinals. (My favorite birds were the grackles though!)
Thank you for sharing. Awesome content. I Lived in Ohio and knew blue jays well. Moving to South East Florida I was surprised to see blue jays and cardinal’s living here.
Difficult to pick what I liked best. OK, I know: The detailed head shots that highlight the differences in appearance. Lesley, I love your videos and the knowledge you share. THANK YOU!
I love this sooo much it actually brought tears to my eyes! 🥲 I really wish we had these birds in California! We have many blue birds, but no Jays. 🐦❤️
I've always regarded the Blue Jay as an eastern species, so I was surprised to discover on your range map that they occur as far west as across Alberta. A number of other "eastern" species also have ranges that extend farther west in the northern part of their ranges. When we travel to our summer place in northwestern Montana, we see a number of other "eastern" species, like Black-capped Chickadee, Eastern Kingbird, Northern Waterthrush, and American Redstart. A very enjoyable video.
OH MY GOSH IT LANDED IN YOUR HAND! I started birdwatching with my friends in an interim and I just saw a blue jay outside my house so I decided to watch the vid.
Lesley, Thank you for sharing your videos ,I’m from saint Joseph Michigan! I recently found many blujays in my backyard. I buy peanuts in shell form they love the peanuts I also buy birdseed to . I have noticed that I love watching the bird’s and seeing the different birds that are coming in black headed chicdee, I bought him his own feeder lol. I go out many times a day to fill bird bowls I have a feeder and bird bowl’s. The black squirrels also come up to eat. I actually saved a baby squirrel so that’s how my passion came about! I’m looking into buying a camera to take pictures of the beautiful bird’s blujays, black headed chickadee’s! I also see cardinals female and male. Thank you for sharing all your beautiful bird stories. Your beautiful pictures. I learned a lot from watching your videos! XO Melinda Blackwell ❤
I LOVE Blue Jays so much! This video was really helpful in so many ways!! My son also has a stuffed animal Blue Jay named Michael Blue Jay after the singer Michael Buble 😂💙💙💙
Blue Jays were always favorites of mine. in fall I'd put peanuts out for them and then watch them bury them around the backyard. I'm outside their range now but I do have a life sized hand carved and hand painted jay standing on a branch and it's very realistic.
Blue Jays have very striking coloring, for sure. But growing up we had a few fruit trees and a vegetable garden in our yard, and we weren't all that happy to see blue jays around! (we had peach, pear, plum and apple trees).

Today I saw one perched on the rod, his head tilting back and forth looking me in the eye. The tray needed more peanuts. 😂. You are a wonderful ambassador for them.
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful! Love the 2 squeaky gate calls.
Yes they are definitley a favorite of mine 🐦🥰
I always associate blue jays with the arrival of true spring. That and they will tell you when they don't want you in their space. So our late dog and I would try to not walk by their trees during the spring.
They're pretty awesome. 💙💙💙🐦🐦🐦
hi Leslie. I enjoyed the tale of the 'pebble hiding' jay tricking the youngster. im also impressed with the friendships youve developed with these birds. we have lots of them here in the pocono mountains, they love the shelled peanuts we put out for them! thanks for a lovely look at these majestic birds!
Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the pebble part. It's such a clever display. Its wonderful that you get jays too. Fun birds. 🥰🐦
Wonderful video, I always love seeing these guys, they always seem like they're playing a cheeky prank on another bird and generally having a laugh.
Hahah that is true. Fun birds
@@LesleytheBirdNerd there fun birds☺️
great video capture! the Jays affinity for the tripod 4:15 is a curious trait... love that you include all their familiar names too ;-)
Thank you very much :)
We've got Scrub & Steller's here in the Willamette valley 💙 your channel has encouraged me to get to know my local feathered friends even better & I'm so grateful 🐦
Aww Bethany that is wonderful I am so glad to read that :) 💙
I found your channel last night.
Nice captures as always Lesley! Thanks for sharing them with us!👍💖😎JP
Thanks Lesley, thanks for sharing the great info. Doing great work.
Such fascinating birds! I'm glad to know that the black markings designate individuals.
I have both blue jays and hawks (and many others) visiting my yard. I never knew that the jays could imitate the hawks like that, though. Amazing!
Another fantastic video! Thanks, Lesley!
I enjoy all of your videos and get a very knowledgeable look into the world/environment of Blue Jay's. Thank you again.
Thank you for sharing such great content!! I love birds too💖
Wow, thanks for the great information. You really know these jays. I want to learn mine.
Lovely
I loved jays before. But you have so deepened my understanding of them. I am so grateful 😘😘😍😍
Aww I love that. They are such interesting beings 😘😍
I really love birds and I really like your channel 😊 Your online store is now my wish list 😄❤️
Thank you very much. I have share half the credit with Jamie. He helps out in such a big way. 🥰🐦
Great video. I learned a lot and will enjoy watching the Blue Jays more from now on.
Awesome 🥰🐦
They are beautiful birds...When I lived where I fed critters...I'd throw a bag of peanuts in the shell on the ground and come back inside, then turn around and watch the blue ground!
Love this video. It's so interesting how they use their pouch. I only see blue Jay's on occasion. Yesterday and today they have been here quite a bit. We put some bla black oil sunflower seeds in the feeder. But they were digging in the dirt around it.
They may have been storing the seeds in the ground. Mine do it all the time so fun to watch 🥰🐦
@@LesleytheBirdNerd I didn't think of that. I watched them most of day.
The pebble decoy tops the list for me. Love your videos Lesley!
Your videos are such a blessing I’m so glad to see new posts from you. Blessings!
Nice!
I have 2 pair that visit my feeders daily. If they don’t see any peanuts out they let me know! I’ll get some and throw them out and they will come down and get them. Love having them around.
Fascinating video! Thank you
Lesley your video and commentary are superb.I am going to try and listen for the gurgle-bob and the squeaky-gate vocalizations in order to ascertain gender in Blue Jays.Thank you for this excellent information.
You are kind. Thank you for the compliment. I hope you hear those calls. 🥰🐦
@@jiveturkey9993 😄 You just might have nailed it ! Certainly a good possibility!
@@patwagner9308 that's what my Scrub Jays do when they're really well-fed.
THANK YOU!
It is wonderful to share these videos and the things I learn. I am so glad that you enjoyed the part showing the different jays up close. 🥰❤🐦
Thank you for videos. It's amazing that they have a excellent vision.
Sweet, beautiful and intelligent. ❤️
I love this sooo much it actually brought tears to my eyes! 🥲 I really wish we had these birds in California! We have many blue birds, but no Jays. 🐦❤️
enjoyed watching them out smart ground squirrels
Super work. All the best!
Thanks a bunch :)
Beautiful species Lesley! you share a lot of information about them and that's great!!
Thank you for the kind comment. 🐦🥰
loved blue Jay
has beautiful colour
Wow. My first visit ti this channel. What professionally well done video and information. Kudos.
Thank you very much 🥰🐦
I LOVE Blue Jays so much! This video was really helpful in so many ways!! My son also has a stuffed animal Blue Jay named Michael Blue Jay after the singer Michael Buble 😂💙💙💙
Aww that is so darn adorable 🥰🐦
@@LesleytheBirdNerd Thank you!🥰
Blue Jays were always favorites of mine. in fall I'd put peanuts out for them and then watch them bury them around the backyard. I'm outside their range now but I do have a life sized hand carved and hand painted jay standing on a branch and it's very realistic.
They are too much fun!
Every day is great when you upload! I also saw my first Great Horned Owl today!
Wow wonderful. So glad you saw the great horned owl. So big but beautiful. ❤🐦🥰
Blue Jays have very striking coloring, for sure. But growing up we had a few fruit trees and a vegetable garden in our yard, and we weren't all that happy to see blue jays around! (we had peach, pear, plum and apple trees).
