- We recently finished an engine swap in one of our VW T25s here at JK HQ, removing the old 1600 Turbo Diesel block for a 2000cc engine from a 1997 Golf GTI. www.justkamper...
The engine swap took us from 69 horsepower to 113, which is pretty noticeable, but why did it take six months longer than expected?

Nice start to resurrecting your Multivan. Just recently I swapped out my engine from the stock 2.1 liter petrol to a 2450 cc petrol. Went from the typical 90 hp to about 130 hp. Not a dramatic upgrade but very useable growth in capability. I sort of wish now I had a five speed transmission for it. We are all very fortunate that anyone gives a darn about these things, as they have a well deserved reputation for carrying a lot of stuff! Original owner of my 1987-1/2 van with about 306,000 miles on it.
in south africa they came from the factory with 2.1 and 2.6l 5 cylinder engines awesome power
And 1.8i petrol as well as a 2.3i petrol
Wonder how I compares to a 2.1dj with 112hp? I miss mine! Stuck with a 78hp Dg at the moment.
We put a mk4 jetta motor in our 61 vw bus, lots of fabrication to make it work on a limited budget. Glad you kept it vw. I have a lot of luck with mk3 motors. 300k + on one and 250k on two others

I got a Ford V 6 Essex engine in my 88 panel van kombi, it was a common thing to do South Africa in the 70's, 80's and 90's as the original engine lack power, overheat in South Africa climate . Goes like a bomb up hills.

Had this done to my old T25 (now sadly sold). Garage that did it tried to cut corners and not replace the fuel tank - big mistake - all sorts of trouble with the injection system - a new tank is an absolute must (along with new fuel lines) - but the end result is really worth it.
It depends in the Tank. If you got a Diesel before the swap is a must. If you got a petrol Engine before, you can keep it. Its because the diesel tanks got a smaller outlet which does not let enough fuel through. Sorry for my Bad english:)
Easiest conversion on the planet. I fitted one of those in 1995!
I would love to see an in-depth/normal speed version of the GTi engine rebuild/service as I want to do that for the GTi I have in my T25 🙂

1.9tdi 115hp would have done the job just as good. And a PB 150hp would have done it even better. 😁
i was thinking the same thing.
1.9tdi 105hp with a remap to 160hp or big turbo/injector it far more powerful/reliable than a gti engine

New wiring loom, new exhaust, swap the sump over. Immobiliser has to come with it unfortunately and that’s a real PITA

Which air filter did you use? Is it using the original air intake at the sides?
well in south Africa I have seen some with 2.0 to 2.5 l petrol from the factory
Where do i find a list of parts required to do the swap?
What about the fuel consumotion? 15liters? 20liters?
Low Torque and high revving. But anything is better than the 1.6 diesel.
Isn't the 1.6 extremely economical? Considering the costs of the conversion i'd rather refresh the diesel and put a small turbo on it - if i absolutely had to have more power.
VW did put a 1.9 litre and 2.1 flat 4 petrol engines in the T25 from factory but didn't produce the same horsepower as the Golf GTI engine you put in yours.
did you just swap the dipstick and tube for the JX one? And then now much oil do you put in - JX spec or the AGG? (or are they the same?)
Hi, we used the JK dipstick so we can check the oil without lifting the engine hatch. We had to drill out the AGG dipstick base to fit the JX Dipstick.
Nice, would a VR6 swap have been difficult? Or maybe a 2.0 16V swap?
I have done both. The 2.0 16v was easy, the VR6 was a hard one, but worth it just for the fantastic noise.
I have put everything from Toyota 2.4 TD to Ford Essex V6, Audi 5 cyl, Porsche flat 6, and more, in VW busses. They are the most versatile platform ever. Love them.
There's loads of different engines you could drop in there, we just picked this one as it's pretty easy and relatively affordable, so it would make a (hopefully useful) guide for a lot more people.
We definitely considered putting something wild in there, but it wouldn't have been as helpful for as many people!

Hi, yes we are using E10 & all the fuel lines are E10 compatible
I’ve changed the engine in my ‘84 Vanagon to a Subie and my problem is the transmission doesn’t work as well with the torque of the new engine as it could. Does your swap feel the same? This is very busy as it is above 65 mph.
A change of ratios would enable the Vanagon to keep up with interstate speeds(75 here in Arkansas and much of the US.). Do gear sets exist that can do that? Is it something most transmission shops can do?

How do you fit the gti engine into the vans wiring loom ?
We used a bespoke built loom to run the injection system. This loom plugs directly into the vans loom at the junction box in the engine bay.
Ill take the diesel!
Thought the same, to make up the missing 60 hp should not be that difficult, plus the torque would be double than that of GTI motor, not to mention the fuel consumption.
Is it posible to fit Vw Golf Mk4 1.8t engine in T3
and still keep the same gearbox?

Hello sir, i have a '88 T3 that came from factory with the air-cooled flat 4 2000cc. Some years ago my father, swapped to a scoobie EA82 on the original bell housing (he fabricated an aluminum plate to change the bolts pattern). Now im looking to swap to a AGG or 2E engine. Do i need the bell housing of a diesel or could i also fabricate another spacer? It's the main car for our job, cant afford to buy a newer one 😢. Sorry for asking you, but can't take a straight answer from someone. Thanks in advance!
what gearbox did use.what gearbox mods
Hi Kimberly, we kept the original gearbox as the jump in engine performance wasn't big enough to cause any issues with the box the T25 came with, but we did add a new adaptor plate :)

I had the original 1.9 petrol water cooled engine with 4 speed gearbox, and I have already done the conversation with 2000cc golf gti 115 hp, and I can understand that this 4 speed gearbox it's not correct for this engine. So I want to ask you what is the correct gearbox code for this conversation please??

113hp lol a good 1.9tdi remaped to 190hp and a good 300fpt would have been a more obvious swap
Maybe leave it stock with the gearbox in mind, but still 235fpt @ 1900 rpm is way better than that set up.

The vw engine is cheaper, more reliable, easier to fit and almost the same power. Some people like to stay within the brand with swaps. You keep getting your swap ideas from Tiktok though.
