We have a small samba school in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (Samba Nova) and these clips are the best by far as a way to get new members to feel samba and to understand what's happening. I agree with you as far as the tuning of the drums, it could be a little lower but I also think it is a matter of taste. Did you listen to the video with headphones or simply listened through the computer speakers? There is a huge difference. Great work, guys!! Does the repique played with a hand and one stick make this more of a Rio samba, in contrast to the two-stick repique of Bahia, or is there some other consideration here?
A very nice video, what I'm missing is a little more detailed explanation of the individual patterns for the various instruments. They're not that hard, but you're playing them quite fast for a lesson, especially the Repinique part.

Usually starts as a first one the repiquine, doing a "solo introdution", then the "second surdo" called here as "surdo de segunda", after that the rest of all instruments, together, comes up. That's the way the "Escolas de Samba" (Samba's School" play at the parade. This is not "Samba Enredo". Samba Enredo is about the music. All Escolas de Samba have their own especific Samba Enredo, which is singing by all componentes.

Hi Alfred! There are several matters to take in consideration! Are you playing stationary or parading? Are you playing with a band or a drumming ensemble? LP makes good surdos to play stationary (it comes with legs)! Meinl makes good surdos to parade with! The best overall brand is called Contemporanea though but they are in Brazil and its a little more difficult to have access to those drums. Hope that helps! Keep Drumming and stay fired up!
Parading, in a group is the plan. Contemporanea I do have access to and the groups, I know uses them, I want one of the shorter ones . Buying my first drum, I'm not sure quite what width I need for the different surdos of the bataria. I want to plan what I believe is called the surdo de tecera, with two mallets. Amigo, o toque esta mais pra axe bahiano nao? Gostei do video mas a divisao esta mais pra axe. Acho que fica evidente no toque de caixa e na divisao do surdo de segunda! Aalem disso o som esta metalizado de mais, e os surdos podiam estar mais graves eu acho.Obrigado....

Yeah, it is a Rio style of playing repinique when you use one wood stick and a bare hand. In Bahia, we usually use two plastic sticks!
