I'm writing a story where a character has a broken record player - your video helped me decide what the problem was, and also how to describe the sounds! Thanks so much!
Thank you sooo much for mentioning within minutes that the distortion get be not "enough" weight...The entire weekend I could not correct an issue that was not an issue until I moved my system to retrieve something that was dropped. I went to forums I emailed various distributors of Pro Ject, weed you tube .... nothing until You mentioned in your video that there can be the possibility of not enough weight. Even though I was at 1.8g still set. I kept resetting the tone arm over and over... I knew it could not be the stylus, its practically brand new. I increased the weight and there was my sound quality that I had previously had. Dude... Thank You!
Great stuff James. I’m a professional musician who’s PLX-1000 has been giving major issues. And it was in 1982 that I last regularly used a record player (an old Dansette!). So once I took your tip on the height adjustment and weighting, the quality improved. Big time. Well done.
hi Michal, thats a good point I forgot to mention that, thanks, I agree they should be more strict on the set up in night clubs once I was on a gig with a friend of mine and when we arrived the decks were set up on a pasting table and when I complained they all looked at me like I had just insulted them or something, this friend I used to DJ with used to take a 20 cm spirit level to gigs to check the decks were level. Thanks for the comment and the input that's appreciated. Nice one!!
Thank you! My decks have not sounded right for years, adjusted the tone arms on your advice & they sound great again! Decks (STR-150s) are older than your video 😂 thanks again!
You solved my problem. I know so little about vinyl. I thought I was moving the weight and i was actually messing with the anti-skate. All good now. Thanks a lot
@costellom5 Hi there, If you just want it for home listening than any of the both will do the trick. but the 1200's have a tone arm height adjustment, which is very handy for proper adjustment. but if you find an Sl-3310 in good condition for a low price grab it with both hands. but if not an SL1210 will be more practice. Hope this helped and thanks for your comment. nice one!!!
@barrydbutcha Easy mate, it could be the contacts on the end of the tone arm, try taking the cartridge off and cleaning them with a cotton bud, I actually did a video on this. Failing that, you could have broken audio cables, if you need some info on them, I did a video on how to replace the audio cables, but try the contacts first it might be them, if so that is simpler to fix. Hope this helped and thanks for your comment. nice one!!!
James - Great video! You know your stuff and get right to the point. Totally worthwhile to watch. At no point did I feel that I was wasting my time. Well done!
hi there, using the type of cleaner that i used on this video should help with the popping. but if you are getting really bad popping that you need to clean the record more thoroughly, iv done a video on that and i will hopefully be uploading it in the next couple of days. you can buy some anti-pop filters that plug in line with your turntables, but i wouldn't bother you could get just the same effect buy just knocking 12KHz (treble) on your mixer down very slightly . nice one!!!
Thanks for the video Viperfrank. After seeking advice from the Hi fi specialists you were the one to fix our overall sound quality problem. Many thanks :-)
yeah i know what you mean, i had a pair of ortofon club cartrages before that came with a pair of deck i bought a while ago and they where terrible, they were nicknamed vinyl eaters, and i could see why they wore one of my records out in a few days after only about 10 plays. funny thing is they discontinued them about 4 month later, i wonder why? thanks for your comment by the way. nice one!!
@tmsteve640 Hi there, yeah could be a couple of things, anti skate is not set correctly, or the weight on the needle is not right, try setting those 1st and see if that sorts your problem. there are videos on my channel showing you how to do that. thanks for your comment and your feedback. nice one!!!
Hi James great video. Ive actually learnt how to use an anti static brush for the first time properly from you. Its no good swiping it over a spinning record you neex to apply sone downward pressure on a still record revolving the brush around the record itself thank you.
Yeah got it thanks everyone. The cabinet that the turntable sits on vibrates. All it took was a foam strip under each side and no more rumble. Rock on. RIP Malcomb.
dang....I was wondering why mine was making these loud popping noises i didn't look thoroughly but when i did,man it was filthy and like a million finger prints on ALL the records. So each one would either be all gone and then some will be insane, thanks man :)
Your video was very helpful. Physics turn out to be powerful here. Thanks for the information. Now cleaning off ( properly ) Led Zeppelin 2. Damn, it sounds good.
Hey Frank, nice video. But lots of record players don't have that thing to level the tonearm with. Mine doesn't, and the manual also says to level it horizontal, but that's impossible! It will always point down a little bit.
I have a 1210 mk11 which was supplied with an Ortofon DJ (Awfultone) cartridge. What a horrible thing. Great for DJ work I suppose, but you could almost see the swarf curling up from the vinyl.
Hey man, I've just watched a few of your vids on turnatble setup - really great clear explanations, hugely appreciated!! I want to ask you about something that bugs me when I'm playing vinyl. A fair few of my records (but not all) sound too sibilant, i.e. whenever the singer makes a s, z, sh or ch sound it's accentuated so these sounds really leap out at you in a not-very-nice sounding way. Is this just crap pressings, or might I STILL have some set up problem? Any thoughts welcome, cheers?
wicked vid mate thanks. ive got real bad sound quality still. gonethrough all ur vids... cant move weight up the arm more than 2 on dial. flipped weight, put penny on cartridge and sounds better a little but don't wanna kill my vinyl!!! think ive set it all up right, got 1 concorde and still same issue. seems like head is too light and cant adjust more weight as the counterweight (after setting to zero) does not slide up arm after about 2 on dial... decks on flat surface.... please help boss.
viperfrank, what cartridge do you recommend for a TechnicsSL-1200MKII? I just bought a used one and i want a cartridge just for listening to music. I am not a DJ But someone recommended the Technics to me as being an exellent turntable. Really enjoy your tutorial videos. Best wishes
hi fella great set of vids. iv got a problem with my technics , both are set up properly and both play vynal , but only thro one speaker. both speakers are in good condition, when i switch the wire from the working speaker to the non working speaker ive got sound also. think i may have a turntable wire broken down from one of the decks as there loads a buzzin from that deck and the speaker that runs on that channel,, help any ideas fella ? cheers butcha
Hi, hope you can help me. I have a BSR 35CS Mcdonald record changer, everything works great except when I want to turn it off, and slide the slider to Auto so that it should turn off, the tonearm goes to the resting place and right away goes back to play the record. It does not go down upon the resting stand so that it should turn off. It use to work great but may be I touched some setting, please let me know how to do this. Thanks in advance.
i have the shure m44-7 and even when the height is set to bottom, lower than zero that is... it is still too high. am i missing something? i have a technics headshell, don't know if it's the original but i guess it is (bought the turntable second hand). i notice other people have experienced this too. it is not much but definately visible to the eye. it is as much that it bothers me! are the ortofon concorde lower/higher than shure m44?
Having a few problems with my turntable set up. Hard to explain. If there is a way I could contact you by phone. Have contacted ortofon and Technics. Not much joy with them. Thanks. Dean..
I have a problem, I have the audio technica lp 120 same as you, and it sounds amazing, but my problem is that the music is much louder than the vocals, sometimes it’s way to hard to hear
viperFrank: I have a record player, that does not have counter weight adjustment, and no antiskate and you cannot adjust the hight of the tone harm. And only one of my Records when it its a high pitch note, it now sounds to sharp, and that started to happen after playing it 5 time, all the other Records does not have that issue even if I played them way more then 10 times. The one that started to have high pitch note too sharp, as no surface sound, except at the very end of the side where it start to glide in the center where there his no groves. The other that does not have that issue, does have alot of surface sound, but the surface sound stop when it his instruments, and the other one that does not have the high note too sharp as just a few places with minor crackle and pop. The biggest issue his the one with the high note gets too sharp. Do you have an idea to what might cause this problem?
I watch d this video and it was very knowledgeable.... However I'm experiencing a much different sound issue coming from one of my stylist.... It's more of a scratchy sound coming through and I'm looking for a little help with figuring this out.... I've cleaned the head and the adjusted everything I can think of and still I'm having the same issue... Please help if possible
Good evening Sir, I am in need of your expertise or at least some advice. I accidentally lifted the pad from my PCB board & now there's no signal from the R-side. How do I fix the R-side pad/trace so that I can solder the lines back in or is my board worthless now?
Back up the counterweight a bit. It could be the stylus. Conical could have a bit more bass than elliptical. Experiment with several different cartridges and different stylus types.
Think of the right location of your speakers. Their vibrations could be a reason for your problem.. Normally speakers should be detached from the hifi rack
Mate I’ve brought a 3rd 1210 mk3 and I’ve noticed that the sound only plays out the right speaker but not the left, plugged back in the mk2 and both speakers are fine . Any ideas matey
outta curiosity, what did you do after that phone call? there was light out of the window and then when you restarted the vid it was pitch black out ! :)
Cool vid. I got a A.T. AR120 usb a few months ago. I am running into a small mixer and into a Denon receiver. There is no ground wire. When I turn up the bass a little there is feedback. Is there a certain spot you can solder a ground on the T.T.? I cant find any info for my model. It would be a very cool table if I can solve this. Thanks.
hi, just bought cheap turntable the brand is vinyl styl, i didnt expected a great one, but it sounds horrible, it doesnt reproduce low frecquencys at all its all trebly and harmfully bright, might have any failure from the manufacturer? i dont have any experience with turntables, thank you!
Did you plug it into a phono input? What you described sounds like a turntable plugged into a normal line input. This is a very common beginner mistake, turntables require a special input that applies a frequency adjustment to get the normal sound. If your stereo does not have a phono input you will need a phono pre amp to put in between the turntable and your sound system.
+viperfrank Hey mate I love ur tuition videos there are a great source of information. I'd like to ask u a question about 1 of my Technic 1210s and wud really appreciate any help you may give. When playing my turntables I've noticed that on 1 of them the music only plays out of 1 of my speakers. Why wud that be mate??? Mick.. Living in Ireland.. Thanks
He instruments are are louder then the vocals but sometimes both come back to normal then drop in volume, what do I do. I got a new stylus and it’s still happening
@Tony Jaksn It's a good question, some are better than others. Don't make him seem a fool just because he wants to know what other people have found through their purchases.

Hey I was wondering my younger sister bought me a new turntable for christmas (it has built in speakers) But Im getting no sound from them what so ever (there is even no sound through headphones) But if I place my head over the record I can faintly hear the music... I have called the company, music stores and friends but nobody can tell me what is wrong. Would you know?
ok so i got a question , i got a pre amp in my turn table ... So i just plug the speakers in the turntable , buy there always a little sound .. like itchy , is it normal because its a old LP ?

The current Technics manual lists the VTA adjustment setting for specific cartridge heights when mounted to the Technics headshell.

I like the way you explain things, mate :D
Keep it up!
No problem, thank you for your comment.
Nice One ; )
Excellent video. Well done. Thank you for making it. 2009 video my year 2018
Also all of your vids are VERY helpful.
Your video was very helpful. Physics turn out to be powerful here. Thanks for the information. Now cleaning off ( properly )
Led Zeppelin 2. Damn, it sounds good.
Any tips for getting fluff off the needle? Great stuff by the way👍
If you don't have an empty vinyl disk, you can use the blank space between grooves at the end of a record ;)
thank you for this lesson. Im still trying to figure out why the volume level is very very low in comparison to my radio or cds.
BIG UP THE DRUM & BASS!!!!!
I just ordered the A Sides & B Fats track "Bring Dat". It's an EXCELLENT track!
Hey Frank, nice video. But lots of record players don't have that thing to level the tonearm with. Mine doesn't, and the manual also says to level it horizontal, but that's impossible! It will always point down a little bit.

Thanks so much for doing this video. Well explained and to the point. Liked and subscribed.
Help needed! The tone arm sticks halfway through a record. I've tried adjusting the weight and anti skating dial but it still happens.
Bearings are goosed

you seem to know your turntable.I have one question:between a SL-1210Mk2 and a Sl-3310 what would you choose for home listening ONLY?
I have the same turntable and I hear a sound flutter when I turn the volume up. So I think I'll try out what you did on you video. Hope it helps.
how did it go, hope you got it sorted.
thank you for your comment.
im getting too much bass when playing vinyl on my sl1200...could the stylus be the problem?

Grounding won't eliminate feedback from bass vibration, you need to move the sub away from the turntable.
If you had a bad ground you'd have a hum (60hz usually) and it be constant.

Michael Geoghegan You get it Sorted?
RCA cable
what weight does a tonar banana need for @home record spinning? the 'S' sounds are sounding distorted right now...thank you in advance.
johnny whale something between 3 g (if you only mix) and 3.4 (for scratchin) lower weight save your vinyl...
He instruments are are louder then the vocals but sometimes both come back to normal then drop in volume, what do I do. I got a new stylus and it’s still happening
any vinyl dust brush to recommend? I have the anti static brush.
@Tony Jaksn It's a good question, some are better than others. Don't make him seem a fool just because he wants to know what other people have found through their purchases.
What causes the dominate S sounds?
Hi I have been watching a lot of your video's I have a Technics SL 1610. But every time I start it up my tone arm will go strait to the end of the record when I use the auto start. I hope you can help me with this. You are my last hope.
If my record skips can i do something to repair it?
Hey I was wondering my younger sister bought me a new turntable for christmas (it has built in speakers)
But Im getting no sound from them what so ever (there is even no sound through headphones)
But if I place my head over the record I can faintly hear the music... I have called the company, music stores and friends but nobody can tell me what is wrong.
Would you know?
+Rebekah Cull it's the record making the sound, not the speakers. It sounds like the speakers are busted. Get external ones and hook em up via RCA.
+Eechu Wama th company got back to me and they are replacing it
ok so i got a question , i got a pre amp in my turn table ... So i just plug the speakers in the turntable , buy there always a little sound .. like itchy , is it normal because its a old LP ?
Have you got an amplifier a pre amp needs an amplifier as well
How do you get your Vinyl from getting electrically charged when cleaning your records?
You have to use mirasol antistatic as a wetting agent- or a similar product, that‘s what i use anyway
Yo, ive read that some Pioneer mixers are not very good for vinyl quality due to the pre amps (I Think), has anyone got any information on this or is it complete nonesense? I have a Pioneer DJM 800 and have been curious to see if this is true
ur video should be used as an example how all videos on u tube should be done.
Does Technic 1200 sounds better than audio-technica AT-LP120 USB?
I've watched the video on LP120 vs Technic 1200 but it only says about better build quality of Technic 1200. But I use Ortofon 2M Red with my LP120 and happy with the detail, HiFi and overall quality of sound from my LP120. Any suggestions by which I can get significantly better quality sound by changing cart like Ortofon 2M Blue?
Tony Jaksn they fixed that problem with the ATLP140xp , much better turntable then the 120
I like only automatic turntables I cannot stand manual decks I also like the auto change deck BSR
another thing that can cause problems is the turntable not being perfectly level
Cheers fella
Thank you
"are you getting poor sound quality from your turntable? (Tutorial for DJs)"
You actually want a 92 degrees stylus angle as well just to be picky
Good guy, very helpful
Mine sounds like it’s slowing down
Basic stuff mate and they’re called records not ‘vinyls’ and clean that ruddy flat 🤣😉
Good tips! Thnx man!
I have a Sony turntable and when I touch the outside of the base, it makes a thumping sound which should not happen. There is no grounding wire so I am not sure this is a grounding problem. In other words, when I touch the base of the turntable, it should not be evident from he speakers.
The grounding wire must have broken off,you have to have one to stop the hum
