    Don't forget to pull that speed sensor because it will get stuck on the main shaft when you separate the case.

      How are you does a civic si or tsx 6speed tranny bolt straight onto the element

  • @AndrewSpencer2
    @AndrewSpencer2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    At the end of the video you briefly touched on reinstalling the speed sensor. But at 4:00 where you magically cut to having the case split, you never mentioned that if you don't remove it now, you'll break it off when you pull the case apart.

  • @ShadetreeJetski

    I just got my element back with this mod done. The Element ALWAYS needed a 6th gear on the highway. My RPM's dropped 800 with that extra gear at highway speeds. It wasnt cheap but the fuel savings should be worth the expense.

    • @thetigertard
      @thetigertard ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you have a shop do it? What kind of cost was it? Been looking at getting one of these little cars but I see a lot of people complaining about the 5 speed ratios

    • @ShadetreeJetski
      @ShadetreeJetski ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @thesuperderp1379 Yes I paid a shop recently when my transmission died. I paid too much 995.00 for the 6th gear mod parts only new clutch, synchros, new cv azles. Total cost 3700.00. The value of the car isn't much more. Honda went on the cheap and left 6th gear out. This mod doesnt give you a reverse lockout, so you have to be careful. It is easier to shift from 4th to sixth than 5th to sixth with this mod.

    • @paolosheaffer9540
      @paolosheaffer9540 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just drove 1700 miles at 4200 rpm. How much did adding 6th cost, and who did it for you? I am in Houston, TX
      Thanks

    • @ShadetreeJetski
      @ShadetreeJetski ปีที่แล้ว

      @paolosheaffer9540 Terry's auto clinic in Milledgeville. This was his first conversion, but he specializes in manual transmissions. Now, he broke my speed sensor and charged me for it. You have to remove it before pulling the cases apart. The problem with the mod is you dont have a reverse lockout and sixth is right next to reverse. I find it easier to shift from 4th to sixth instead of fifth to sixth as you avoid accidentally hitting reverse.
      My element is the AWD version. The Honda element owners forum online has a list of the patrs you need. I had a full transmission rebuild with new synchros , clutch, cv axles and this mod 3700 bucks. 995 he charged for the mod parts included in that 3700.

  • @DarylSinghh
    @DarylSinghh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In theory can't u just swap over half of a tsx casing with the tsx gears for instance onto the crv or element main half of the transmission since everything's the same and the only difference being is u would need to use a tsx shifter that way u get the shifter lock out and the speed sensor stays the same plus u get half of a light weight magnesium case

  • @rodneyhuffaker
    @rodneyhuffaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My honda fit could use this. The latest honda fits have 6 speed manual but the final drive ratio is the same. Like you said, 4200 when going 85. Kills the gas mileage. Automatic is rated better for highway miles because of this.

    Is this process the same for the ep3 trans? I’m going turbo with my car, but I’ve been told my 5 speed gear ratios will be better for boost. I’d like to add 6th as a gas saver gear so that way I can keep my 5 speed gear ratios for the turbo.

  • @crstothard

    Fantastic vid! Thanks for posting! What is the tallest gear you can drop into the sixth slot? Looking for highest efficiency/lowest RPM at 80 mph on flat ground at sea level. I need zero acceleration in sixth, just enough to keep it moving. Greetings from NYC!

  • @canuckfixit7722
    @canuckfixit7722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That is a cool upgrade for an Element that so badly needs a sixth gear to keep highway revs down and saves some gas. What is the long term durability of this? Did the transmission fail after only 10,000 miles?

    • @jonpfun
      @jonpfun ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you think the transmission would fail? It was literally designed for a 6th gear. Honda was just saving money by not adding one.

    • @canuckfixit7722
      @canuckfixit7722 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonpfun The Element has a much larger frontal area than any coupe or sedan the K24 would be installed in. Means more drag at highway speeds and therefore greater load on the gear stack and higher temperature if not lubricated effectively. In any case my concern was also based on anecdotal information. The Element was not an entry-level SUV so Honda designers could have included taller gearing if they thought it would be durable.

    • @BmoreIrish
      @BmoreIrish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also no VTEC engaged in the element means a LOT quieter highway mileage. The damn low VTEC engagement means the 5spd is droning at like 65 mph on the highway. It’s so F’ing obnoxious.

    Found this video because aim trying to do something similar with a Mazda trans lol. Even expecting the same rev lockout issue because the donor 6 speed uses a lockout in the cabin side of the cable shifter setup and I will likely have to use my original rod shifter setup. Lucky for me 6th is opposite of this trans and is next to 1st. So no real issue with hitting it at speed.

    I just finished doing this on my 2006 CR-V. As Mark said the fact that Honda did not do this from the factrory is a conspiracy level WTF. Huge thumbs down for Honda. A few notes about the 2002-2006 CR-V process is the gear selector from the donor TSX will NOT drop into your CR-V. The mounting holes do not line up. However there is hope as the CR-V gear selector piece has a blank mold of where the solenoid "should" go. With the proper drilling and measurements I think the reverse lock out could be transferred over to the CR-V. Wiring would be simple - run a 12V lead to the solenoid, and install a "normally closed" push button on your shifter. The lockout is not necessary, but it would remove the stress of shifting into 6th. The shift from 5th into 6th without the lockout is a problem. I end up going back into 4th because the shifter mechanism likes to return to center when it leaves 5th, which screws up my alignment with 6th. With some practice this is not a problem, and yes I did buzz reverse trying to go from 4th into 6th after missing 6th, and I've been driving/racing stick for 22 years. I would very much like the lock out. All that aside this is an amazing mod for Elements and CR-Vs. I used a 2007 TSX 6 Speed ($350 on Craigslist) for this project.
    Mark thank you for posting these videos. Checkout Harbor freight and get a hydraulic press, and some snap ring pliers using online discount coupons. It'll run you about $150, and save you a lot of hammering, and gnashing of teeth.

    Im assuming thats a pci side skirt kit? What front lip is that on the EJ1? btw it'd be cool to meet up sometime, i also live in the South and our cars would be good competition for some friendly road racing. My EJ1 is N/A H22A but ugly as shit compared to yours.

    Measure the thickness of the gears and collars you are removing and compare them to the ones you are putting in, adjusting shim thickness on main and counter shafts as needed. It's a major red flag for your countershaft to engage the snap ring like in this video when putting the top half of case back on. The snap ring should sit just out of the groove in the top countershaft bearing when the case is put back on, flipping the trans to let the shaft drop and engage the snap ring on final assembly. This is so the countershaft 'floats' between the top and bottom counter shaft bearings. In this video the shaft shim is too thick and the bearings are being compressed between top and bottom case.
