- World Mission Sunday falls on the second-last Sunday in October every year. It is the one Sunday in our calendar when the Mass is celebrated exclusively for missionary activity. It is one of only three Papal collections and has been especially chosen by the Holy Father to support the mission of the Church in the world via Missio.
World Mission Sunday is our chance to show love and solidarity to our brothers and sisters overseas. In offering our prayers, we join with missionaries everywhere in communion and compassion to support them in spreading the Good News, and by giving a donation we respond to Christ’s call to share our faith in Jesus so that all may experience God’s love.
The funds raised build much-needed infrastructure, from chapels and schools to orphanages, clinics and dispensaries in countries where the Church is new, young, or poor.
Every single Catholic parish in the world is asked to play their part through their prayers and offerings. Everyone gives what they can and those who are in greatest need of support receive the most. Every Catholic community, in every country, sends a powerful message of faith, hope, and love through their prayers and donations.
Missio is responsible for coordinating World Mission Sunday and provides new, young, or poor dioceses with the essential support they need on their journey to becoming self-sufficient. The local community requests support from the Missio network. These requests are then reviewed and voted upon by Missio’s National Directors throughout the world. This support from the global Missio family transforms lives. It creates a hub from which the young Church can spread the Good News of the Gospel, minister to the faithful, and deliver essential services in health and education.
We work through local bishops, churches and missionary congregations to ensure that resources are distributed equitably and justly - on the basis of need. The money goes directly from England and Wales to the bishops in the mission territories - local Church directly helping local Church!
