I'm from the UK, and I'm just a few months older than Paul Bettany and I can't remember The Dick Van Dyke show being on British television.
Until 1982 there were only three TV channels in the UK, so I'd be curious to know who showed The Dick Van Dyke Show.

    • @barneytrubble
      @barneytrubble 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I managed to find listings for it being shown on BBC1 in the 1960s... perhaps it was shown as repeats in the 70s?? But I never saw it on tv in UK and was surprised that he claimed to regularly watch it.

    • @ianmacfarlane1241

      @@barneytrubble Hahaha - I'm glad I'm not alone.
It's hardly a big deal, but I was kinda curious because Dick Van Dyke was a pretty big star and with there being only three channels until 82, then only four for a good few years after it should have been quite prominent.
He was pretty specific about when it was on, but I was running through what I remember of weekend TV schedules, and I'm none the wiser.
It could only have been on BBC 2 on a Saturday, prior to the old 'matinee' films...I think.
Maybe he just has a better memory, or maybe I was out playing.
      Take care ✌️

The big deal for me in US television was Hill Street Blues - a HUGE fan of that.
Still can't remember Dick Van Dyke - I do remember that kinda hospital/detective thing he did with his son, but that was much later.
      Take care ✌️

@@barneytrubble There was a lot of stuff shown in the afternoons, on BBC2 when they went to full day programming: and late night slots, like the Phil Silvers Show and Bilko had. Then Channel 4 showed all sorts in its first few years, that would be early 80s.
Certainly Jeannie and BeWitched were on around then, and those were great: I think I remember noticing the Dick Van Dyke show at least once but I have to say it seemed very unfunny... I never sought it out.

I'm sure it's just an anecdotal reference to filming an avengers movie, But the context of him bringing up Mark Ruffalo now, and the pandemic in the same few seconds makes me slightly suspicious that we're going to get a Bruce Banner/Smart Hulk appearance in the last episode.

I don't recall either, and I'm a few years older than Bettany. I guess it might have been on ITV -- we were a BBC family -- but I'd never heard of it before I started visiting the US. As a kid I only knew him through the films I saw him in -- Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, etc. -- including that decidedly dodgy Cockney accent. Agree about the warmth though.
Bewitched was on TV all the time during my childhood.

I'm around the same age as Paul and The DIck Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie as well as later sitcoms like Laverne and Shirley were regularly on television when I was younger and in my early teens. Mainly on Channel 4. Before Channel 4 you would also get a lot of American serialised TV on BBC2 2 like the old Flash Gordon and Superman serials from the 40's and 50's. The only other options were Grandstand or World of Sport, so if you were not into sport these were extremely popular.

@@wierdalien1 ah the pedant, so quick to respond without considering that autocorrect or even possibly a simple error may have been at play.
How wonderful your world of utter perfection must be, where you have the time and inclination to turn a brief comment into an act of aggression.
Sadly, the typo pedant like yourself often fails to spot their own grammar errors, such as “ive” rather than “I’ve”, “cant” rather than “can’t”, “i” rather than “I” and “you” rather than “you’re”, or even “british” rather than “British”. If I was being really pedantic, as I know you prefer, I would suggest that it should be “correctly” instead of “right”.
Almost as if you are in fact exactly what you accuse others to be! Oh my, surely not. A hypocrite? In a comments section? Imagine my perpetual surprise.
