I usually do not comment, but I must on this video; it helped me out tremendously! It saved me money since BMW dealership charges so much for the most minute services (mostly labor); I was desperate to get the rear view mirror attached back on my 2010 BMW - it fell off due to the current heat wave. Anyway, the video was a great help and I was able to follow the instructions and got the job done! Thank you!
Thanks for making this video. We needed to review it several times near the end where you are reinstalling the mirror with the tension springs and the clam shell. Your advice that the clam shell could take a few minutes to a half hour was practical. It took us about 10 minutes or more, though I am not sure it was actually difficult. The mirror going back on did take some time. In the end it was perfect. Since this was "new to me" and the mirror was repaired, the key fob worked, the garage doors were programmed and we were quite happy. Thanks
We knocked the mirror off my wife's Honda civic and they now have the same nut, could not get it on at all but watching this video, simple as turning mirror, it's all back on now so thank you very much.
Great video, used it for my E90 and had the mirror replaced in less than 10 minutes. The hardest part was keeping the wires out of the way of the shroud. I was sitting in the passenger seat and couldn't see they were getting in the way.
I only needed to know how to replace the “clam shell” portion. Thank you for this video. I blame car engineering, how people who are so smart make fixing these things so incredibly complicated.

Hello, you did a great job explaining what the function of the red light under your Windshield does, however my question to you is what do I do when the light no longer works? I took the red cover off and the bulb appears to be a tiny filament type bulb attached to a wire but I can't find any type of a bulb or wiring kit to repair it, all bulbs burn out eventually so there must be some type of method to repair it, can you help me please? I have a 2004 330xi. Thank You Steven Lawson

Follwed your instructions to replace the mirror on my 2004 645ci Convertible with a one I got on ebay and now the remote doesnt work any suggestions-do I need to reprogram?
Hello, I have seen some issues with rain light sensors on older vehicles. They require coding and then initialization. If a shop has GT1 software that would be the best way. There may be some aftermarket scan tools that can do this as well like a high end snap on scanner.
@@AskTheCarExperts Thanks for the quick response. Garage with the right software I do that! I'm watching all your videos today related to e39 because trying to solve an issue more important than the rain sensor. Replaced leaking on top of the crankshaft sensor thermostat on M52 engine, replaced the crankshaft sensor because hard to start and stall after warms up. Lower hose after thermostat at the moment gets hard when cars warm-up (feels like a lot of air under pressure instead of being filled with coolant in it) INPA shows only Oil sensor defect, Light Modul error, Crankshaft sensor signal (engine temp -47.25 / Bat voltage 19.58V) I'm going to replace the water pump, check oil pressure sensor, coolant temp sensor, maybe unplug Oil sensor to see any difference.
@@Goliath2012Thai In most cases it is not removable. The glass can break when trying to separate it. In rare cases they separate on their own. I believe they are attached with a strong super glue.
My BMW E53 is it the same? Cause I unplug the cable but my key remote can't use anymore. The reason I removed the cable because it has a sound. So this rain sensor to gather with the key remote as well?
Hello Jeff, The key issue is going to something else as the rain light sensor does not control any remote functions. Issue scan range from a bad diversity antenna, a bad key, rear glass issue, or a general module issue.
thank you! watched the video and was able to remove and replace my mirror with no problem :) one question, you mentioned with convertibles, the unit is also the receiver for the remote controls. well, none of my remotes work now that i've replaced my mirror. any suggestions on what i should do next?
Ok! I have a what i think is a good question! :) I think my Red Flashing light went out? How can you replace that light in the middle of the red circle thats attached to the bottom of the mirror?? Great Video by the way!!
AskTheCarExperts Hmm. Can that piece attached to the windshield be replaced? I took off my RLS unit and can see that the other piece is glued to the windshield but didn't want to pull it off without knowing if it has any little cables attached to the windshield. Can I pull it off safely and replace it? My rain sensor/intermittent function does not work and I'm trying to assess which component is bad.
Unfortunately I do not think that part is replaceable separate from the windshield for purchase. In most cases it is the rain light sensor but it does require coding upon replacement and initialization so you will need to find a shop that can do this for you.
It is very difficult to snap this back in place when this comes apart. In most cases you will need to replace the mirror. It can be forced back in but it may break in the process.
What you need to do is place a towel on the ground, then put a little Vaseline on the ball joint and in the hole. Make sure all your wires are attached and not in the way (i.e. make sure they go in the hole as you are putting the ball joint into the hole). Then grab some pot holders or wash cloth for your hands and your going to basically use your body weight to press the mirror on to the ball joint. Be careful not to break it, but once I figured this out I got it right away! Good luck!
How do you recalibrate the rain sensor after replacement? I just had a new windshield installed by Safelite, now instead of intermittent wipers depending on rain, the wipers just go to "low speed" mode even if there's no rain on the windshield.
Hi Joe, You will need a scan tool that can perform a calibration reset. I would contact safelite as they may need to sublet it out to a shop that can do that for you.
Safelite tried a scan tool. Didn't work. Tried another windshield but still by Fuyao. Didn't work. I ended up removing the fuse for the rain sensor. This sets the wipers to intermittent mode controlled by the little wheel and apparently using the vehicle speed sensor. At a stop, the time between wipes is much longer than when in motion. So, I might just forget about the rain sensor.
I bought a 2005 bmw x3 3.0i The rear view mirror is hanging and I need to fix it but the small wires going to the Rain light sensor were pulled out from the plastic thing and I don't know in which order the go please help.
Hello, Those wires are not going to have the amperage rating you will need for your dash cam. Best to find a large gauge power wire and tap into that instead. If you go off the ignition wiring you may be able to have it turn off and on with key on and off.

thanks a lot for posting that. I appreciated a lot.
Thank you for watching Federico :) Glad you found it helpful!
I got the ball in by putting it on a table, then with potholders pushing the ball in... have to make sure all the wires are inside, those may be stopping the ball from snapping in. I still can't get the mirror reattached.... watching you struggle with it, no wonder!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for not using a torchlight during recoding- is very helpfully to see nothing in details... 🙄

Fin Elliott lol I just chipped mine 10 minutes ago then saw this video smh
Bok easy
Lol I broke the glass
Oh man, sometime that can happen. Twisting is the key to this mirror with very little downward pressure.
These mirrors are a pain in the butt and stupid design!
Hi Martin, You are not wrong! They can be a pain. I am pretty used to the install procedure so I don't find it that hard anymore. I made this video quite a while ago because I realized it was a confusing process. I hope you where able to get yours off and on ok!
@@AskTheCarExperts The metal mount fell off the windshield and I had to experiment with several glues to get it back on. Regular rear view mirror glue absolutely does not work. Then I finally got a good gel glue that worked extremely well and I wound up gluing the mount in the wrong configuration 😧 So I had to heat the metal mount with a torch to be able to get it back off. Im going to try it all over again and hopefully I get it right this time 😆
