    The Bul Armory Axe Tomahawk is the Glock inspired firearm that does it better! This may be one of the best 9mm pistols I've ever reviewed and that's impressive for a striker fired polymer handgun. In this full review, Nightwood Guns will discuss whether or not the Bul Armory Axe Tomahawk is worth it. Bul Armory offers the Cleaver, Hatchet, and Tomahawk as different Axe models, and the Axe Tomahawk I reviewed had no issues or problems! And that's just the beginning! See how this ported pistol performed in today's review! I'm excited to shoot and share the Bul Armory Axe Tomahawk review in today's TH-cam video! Is it any good? Stay tuned for the action to see how it is: reliability and shootability-wise!

    Damn it Nightwood Guns! I didn't know I wanted one of these, but after your review, I do. Not a bad price for such a feature rich gun, that doesn't appear to need any upgrades.
    Competition breeds innovation. If consumers stopped defending sub-par offerings from their favorite manufacturers, there would be more firearms like this out there. Awesome review, as always.

    Love mine. Only negative is one that would be the expected one…the ports will cloud your optic. That won’t affect it for defensive use. Just understand that you’ll have to clean it (the optic) more frequently. I change my Shadow Systems triggers to Timney or Johnny Glock. Not on this one. Trigger is good so I’ll keep it

      @m4rvinmartian who gives a shit if it's cloudy or not. You've heard of dot occlusion I'm sure. Thats literally blacked out. If you're target focused you don't know if it's occluded or not. I'd say in a defensive situation you will 100 percent be target focused. What's the problem

    • @raclark52
      @raclark52 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@m4rvinmartianI would that if you keep the red dot clean, if you must use it in a defensive situation you are not shooting enough rounds to worry about impacting the red dot. Hopefully. If you are shooting over 100 rounds in a defensive situation something is seriously wrong. Just saying.

      @@m4rvinmartian Dude come on.....how does it get cloudy? Only from extended shooting...he clearly stated you just have to clean it more often than a non-ported gun.....so as long as it starts out clean then of course it's still going to be clean when you need it for self defense....same as any optic or even your eyeglasses or sunglasses or even your windshield.....it's only going to be as clean as how well you've cleaned it before you actually need it....

    I’m officially a Bul shill. I got the tac pro before they updated the line but sent to Nighthawk to crown the barrel flush with slide, polish DLC and blackout controls, tool less guide rod install, and engraved an EGA for good measure. Had my eyes on this gun as well. I feel like Bul is disrupting like Holosun did but is still being slept on.

      True statement 😆. Glock does get unfair hate in that regard. They pretty much paved the way for frame mounted weapon lights, but somehow "never adapted". My oldest glock has a Gen 2 2 pin design with a dust cover that mounts an x300U boat. How, since Gen 3 was where it got introduced and both Gen 3 and 4 were 3 pin designs? Oh right....they were innovating early! 😉😘

    I have the axe full size hatchet. It’s part of my carry rotation. The only knock I can give is the dingus came out of the trigger shoe after about 700 rounds. I sent it back to Bul and they repaired it free of charge. I can only give them C+on customer service in Florida. I received an email that it was repaired but it took them an additional 3 more weeks to ship back after multiple calls to them.

    I built several sizes of the Polymer 80 frame kits, actually 9 of them. Being a 1911 guy and having fired nearly 1 million rounds through dozens of pistols, I just could never get used ro the grip angle. Once i saw P80 had redesigned their frame with 1911 grip angles and still ran reliable Glock mags, i had to try one. Im a part time Pistolsmith and Glock trained armorer ,so doing the builds was super easy. Used only high quality match barrels that had to be actually hand fit to the slide and locking.block interface i was able to build some.very accurate pistols .
    Did several 19/23 sized builds in 9mm& 40 S&W,
    17 Sized in 9mm, .40, and .357 Sig.
    And one 43 sized single stack.
    Funny but the nost accurate and my favorite to shoot is a 21 sized in .45 acp.i love that one and it is amazingly accurate.
    Recently built my first 2 2011/1911 DS pistols , one in 9mm and one in 38 Super.
    Both are comped, built on JEM Guns frames and loaded with hign quality parts, all hand fit and extremely accurate with near zero muzzle flip or dip on return to battery.
    Been eyeing this one and the Bul Armory sasII carry though.
    Just finished a alloy frame commander length carry piece in .357 Sig for a friend. Love that calibers ballistics and energy for defensive use.
    I recently subbed your channel. I really enjoy your honest, no holding back reviews on firearms. Not everyone is willing to risk peeing in manufacturers Wheaties if they get a lemon, so its refreshing to see honest evaluation done.

    I ordered my ported Axe Tomahawk FS before I saw your review or the similarly favorable review by thehumblemarksman. Thank you so much for making me realize I can use the mounting screws for my Holosun that came on the pistol holding the filler plate in place, because the screws that BUL sells allegedly for RMR mounting are not usable. The heads are way too large, so as to not allow the screws to seat properly. I was leary of the small screws, but since you shot 1000 rounds with no problem, I will not worry about them further. The Holosun is such a perfect fit in the cutout, there can be very little stress on the screws from recoil - they just need to hold the sight in place.

    • @NightwoodGuns

    Got my Tomahawk FS this week and shot it for the first time today. It's everything you said it was. It's my first ported gun and it's truly incredible how the ports transform the recoil impulse and keep that dot in the window. It's exactly what I was looking for.
    I tried a complete Ghost kit and absolutely hated it. I ended up taking it out and only using the safety plunger spring. Now the trigger is (Glock) perfect for me. Very impressive for a factory trigger. After only roughly 200 rounds the trigger has already gotten a bit lighter.
    The two glaring weaknesses of the gun are the stylized trigger guard and the mag release. The trigger guard is nothing like a G17 guard and that caused problems with the Double Alpha Max holster I bought. I had to reshape the guard and although it's better, it's still not as good as how a G17 would fit.
    Then, that horrible mag release. I took it out, worked it, and the grip, over and now it's free and smooth. However, it still wasn't suitable for any kind of competition. I designed and installed a mag release button and the problem of the insufficient button height are gone. No need to reposition the hand for a speedy and smooth drop of the mag. It may be even better than my Prodigy mag release!
    Sorry to ramble. Thanks for the great review. It led me to a purchase that I'm extremely pleased with and I know it will serve me well in local steel challenges.

    Everything feels better with a DPM installed! As always great review, I might actually go pick one of these up. Since this is built around a Glock platform, does that mean I can go with the un-ported barrel and run another gen4 slide? I know it's a little weird to buy something thats already tricked out and mod it but like you said they've already done all of the work for you, so if I can run the killer innovations slide that I want on a frame that's already had the work done, I look at it as a time saver and possibly a money saver

    It’s a double edge sword.
    Glock originally wanted to make a revolutionary gun that just worked and was cheap. He did that.
    What more could you need? But eventually as other companies come up with better features, it begs to ask, “why doesn’t Glock?”
    I’ll still always buy a Glock because they’re so affordable and they just work.
    Buttttt. I wouldn’t mind some slides completely designed with a RMR or RMRcc in mind. With a ported barrel stock. With a thread barrel and stock compensator options. With a modular grip similar to the P320 or the VEZ OZ9. Make a small skinny frame that could accommodate a 43X slide or somehow fit a 19/17 size slide with different grips.
    So many options. But would they be as reliable with all this? Maybe not. Would they be as affordable? Maybe not. And so I’m fine buying a different gun based on my needs.

    First, thank you so much for the review!
    I was planning to get the mac 9 ds after watching your tisas 1911 ds review. But after hearing you say "this striker fire pistol has tighter tolerances than the tisas ds 1911", I started having doubts. Also, I believe in your last Q&A video you mentioned that from the people you trust, you heard that the tisas ds 1911 has a better shooting experience than the mac 9 ds. 😅 Anyway, I think you didn't have the chance to test the mac 9 ds or the canik tti combat yet but I was wondering, which one of the two would you recommend buying? I'm asking you this because after watching almost all canik tti combat reviews on TH-cam, I started to lean more towards it than the mac 9 ds even though I like the 2011 concept much more than I do striker fired polymer guns. Appreciate!

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Be aware that 99% of the TTI Canik reviews out there have strings attached. They only just hit “the wild” in the last couple of days. That being said, I’m sure it’s great. I’m just all for informed consent 👍 And yes, I heard from the factory that the 5-inch Tisas shoots better than the MAC. But the MAC can be sprung better. I’m still waiting to get my hands on a MAC to determine for myself. I would go with a the MAC or Tisas over the Canik, personally. 👍 That Tisas I ran was mind blowing for the price.

    Random question: I've only recently had to LocTite something myself when it came to installing the firing pin in my FGC-9 build... do you typically apply LocTite to the threads first and let it dry first, or is it okay to apply and seat the screw wet?

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You want to use alcohol on the threads to remove any grease. After drying, apply a dab of loctite to each screw and install wet. Then give it 24 hours to fully set 👍 And I always recommend a paint pen for witness marks so you can visually see if the screws ever start backing out.

    A lot of people don't know that the axe triggers have a pre-travel set screw adjustment, so you can eliminate some most of the take up. Also Ramm Tactical has a great trigger called the leverage trigger. It has less pre-travel than the stock and it too has a set screw adjustment. the trigger also drops 2 or 3lbs off the trigger weight. It comes with a trigger bar and springs, but without changing the springs, leaving everything factory drops the weight. They have a video putting it in the axe hatchet c, if anyone is interested.I'm getting the hatchet and will be putting the ramm tactical leverage trigger in it for lighter pull.

    I was looking for a soft shooting but lightweight gun. I love my Prodigy 4.25 for USPSA but damn it's heavy and hard to swing around in steel competitions. I ordered a Tomahawk FS and am hoping that it fits the bill. I checked on the DPS site and they don't list a spring kit for the Tomahawk, only the Cherokee. Thanks!

      It might be worth sending DPM an email. They might put one together for you or a Gen 3 Glock might fit. They are cool people and always happy to help 👍 Hope you enjoy your Tomahawk as much as I do!

      Just get a gen 3 Glock kit the tomahawk is a gen 3 clone can take all gen 3 parts.

      @@Tsand4 Well, I figured that since the gun was ported, the recoil springs would be quite a bit different than a stock Glock.

      @@baxrok2. I know. But as Brett has said he’s used DPM kits that aren’t specifically made for ported/comp’d guns but they work the best on those types of pistols. He uses DPM kit for his Glock with the radian ramjet that is made for stock glocks not comp’d glocks and it makes the pistol even better. The oem spring for the ported Bul might be a tad lighter then a stock one but that’s about it.

      Depends on the optic, mount, and screws. But usually 15 inch pounds with a dab of blue loctite

  • @madpimp12

    I have the same model. I love the texture on the grip and slide. It also comes with the slide cut for the optic. It will cost you much less compared to if you got the stippling and the cuts on the slide of a Glock 34. The price for this pistol fell under $900 . Even if you didn't like the Bul, shadow systems puts the same amount of work into their pistols. The only downside I had with Bul Armory pistols; they are very hard to find. Even if you go straight to the manufacturer, they almost never have them in stock. That goes for the Tomahawk and the SAS 2011 and the Ultra. The only way I got mine is when I was looking for another gun and they happen to have two Tomahawks in stock.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, that did a great job with this offering! Like you said, Bul’s one problem is keeping things in stock. But I’d rather them be hard to get versus pumping them out in high volume and losing QC.
