- Spyro: A Hero's Tail review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Spyro: A Hero's Tail for the Nintendo GameCube.
Released in 2004, this game was developed by Eurocom and Traveller's Tales and was published by Vivendi. This is a classic Spyro experience, filled with all of the abilities that the series was known for before the Legend of Spyro series started. It's also has great controls that saves the player from useless frustration. However, the cast of the Legend of Spyro series does have a bit more to offer.

This was the only spyro game after the original ps1 trilogy I thoroughly enjoyed. I felt like it had more of the classic roots than the modern spyro games.
Honestly, why is this game underrated? The platforming is fun, the voice acting is good enough, the graphics are fantastic (I think better than Wrath of Cortex) and I actually love it more than Spyro 3. Though, the story kinda sucks.
Wait. Is that...Tara Strong? And Jess Harnell as Spyro? Whoa.

Got this today on the PS2 . Was worried because I head it when down hill after the PS1 games, but it doesn’t sound like it was this one
Those guys at Insomniac and Naughty Dog are geniuses and were a major reason Sony were the king of the gaming industry for the last two generations. I never got around to playing "Ratchet and Clank" though and I don't have a PS3.

This game was very my first Spyro game and I feel head over heels for it as soon as the story started to play.
I was in love with this game when I was 8!
If I had to pick a favorite Spyro game aside from the original three, it would be this one.

The Insomniac "Spyro" games defined my childhood (alongside "Crash Bandicoot") and I love all three of them. It truly is a shame that platform gaming is a scarce art in the medium. I just finished "Jak II" and "3" and I got depressed after I finished it. Insomniac NEEDS to get their hands back on the "Spyro" franchise and reboot it, I heard the same is going on for Naughty Dog and "Crash" though. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!!
i also have this game but is for the ps2, i really like the visual style of the game and the gameplay for me is great. glad to have it.
1. A game doesn't have to be original to be well executed.
2. The "fairy" (it's a dragonfly) is not used in the same way as Navi. He is used as a sort of health bar (Yellow= 3hp, Blue=2hp, Not there=1hp), he is not a useless guide. He also has his own gameplay segments throughout the game. That is also a minor complaint that doesn't affect the gameplay in any way, and is just a nit-pick you could throw out at several games.
3. I legitimately don't know what you mean when you say the game...
And after ''A Hero's Tail'', it went straight to shit.
Kinda like how everything went to shit for Crash Bandicoot after Twinsanity. At least both series have been revived through remasters.
I tried this game some time ago, but the awkward controls, enemy placement (sometimes enemies were able to attack you even before you have a chance to see them) and the game forcing you to play mini-games to advance made me not want to keep playing this game :|
I hated this back when I was really young but it doesn't look that bad seeing this review. May be worth playing again...
This is the only Spyro-game I have never played. I still need to buy it on PS2!
Gamecube has huge potential for graphics, but unfortunately most games don't take advantage of it.

Before this video, a Skylanders Giants commercial was playing. I started to cry........and I'm only 13.
It was my first ever game I got the version for the original xbox I love reliving the past on my current xbox 360.
Why did you want the PS1 when you already have PS2? Don't you know the PS2 is backwards-compatible?

Played this game and It's more of the same so if you like the PSX titles (and aren't tired of them), you'll enjoy this too.
this game wasn't as good as Spyro 2 or 3 but it's absolutely perfect control makes it certainly better than Spyro 1. just wish there were more levels with more variety in themes.
It seemed to be geared towards a younger audience than the originals, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Way better than Enter the Dragonfly.
Obviously the game has nowhere as near as the polish that the Inosmniac Spyro games had, but this is still really enjoyable.
After this one,the Spyro games basically turned to crap.

Why dod people say nice graphics for gamecube? Gamecbe had a more powerful cpu and gpu than the ps2?
Why are you constantly analyzing Ember as a character? She literally has 1 line in the whole game.
tbh this game was great, had the charm of the originals. then they changed it all.. kinda like how twinsanity got it right too

I remember playing this a long time ago. The game's not bad, but I found the music to be forgettable and the platforming basic.

"rips off" Mario's item collection system. Do you mean how Dark Crystals are to Spyro are what Stars are to Mario? If so, than that would also make Mario a "rip off" because collecting items in such a way was developed before Mario. Sorry

it wasn't bad but it does not compare to this, the legend of spyro series and the originals. Skylanders is just a failed reboot.

The ps legend titles were much better imo.
"RPG elements". Ok how does this guy even have a job as a reviewer? The Legend of Spyro games are horrible attempts to ape God of War beat-em-ups while ruining everything Spyro was about. It featured horrible voice acting, horrible animations and a grandiose and verbose script of trite and cliche concepts. It used the same logic many stories try to execute and fail. They think if they make things seem "epic" or "grand" it makes them so, there is a reason Lord of the Rings works and it's not because it is complicated, it is because it has good characters and an interesting story. The Legends games were not about platforming but about combat. They featured no RPG elements at all but a direct cloning of the games like God of War, while doing it poorly. I swear he has no idea what he is talking about with regards to anything gaming related let alone Spyro.
