    I never knew racks could be full of oil until i undid one while jammed under the car and had it pour down my sleeve and neck. I remember using grease instead when refiting the boots.

    You can pull the plunger out of that pump, pore the oil in from the top, and then push the plunger back in. Don't fill it completely, give yourself a bit of air to work with. So glad we don't have salt spread on our roads over here. What a mess it makes!

    Getting on with it mate 👍
    That spanner size ¾ is three quarters... As in three quarters of an inch. Tracking trick.. Two lengths of timber or box section steel, must be perfectly straight, one alongside each tyre, measure the distance behind the wheel and in front of the wheel and adjust until equal. This will set the front wheels parallel, not exact but it'll do till you get it done properly 👍

  • @normanstephens5391
    @normanstephens5391 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi There. Just an observation. You appeared to re fit the plastic (packing covers) over the track rod ball joints. I think this is a no no come MOT time. The tester will be unable to see/check for perished/leaking rubber boots. Could be wrong but they are not fitted to modern vehicles. See you in the next one. ✔✔

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there mate, I just put the plastic covers on until the rack goes back on to stop the rubbers getting damaged when sitting in the garage (also the car is MOT exempt 😀) Thanks for continuing to watch 👍

  • @garyl5128
    @garyl5128 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The rubber on those steering joints can split, so replacing it now is a good idea. I actually saw one that had split and was only held on on one side - very scary!

    Hey Viva man, Nice job fettlin' the steering rack, That old bent steering rack must have had a big smack on something to bend it like that.
    I've seen new oil put into non power steering racks before back in the day like that but I always wondered how they bled the air out of it when turning it from lock to lock?

    Is there not an inspection cover on the body of the rack where the steering shaft goes in? It'll be oval(ish) in shape and secured by a couple of bolts. That's the normal means of getting the oil in....

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi mate, yes there is a pinion cover but thats not where the oil goes in on this one, the rack is meant to be stood up and the oil put down one of the boots 👍

    I can see where you are going wrong, if you followed the Haynes workshop manual it would have taken 15 mins or so and re-fitting is the reverse procedure, the book of lies is never wrong. So many times I have done exactly as described, only to be hours into the job, with pry bars, long Breaker Bars, tins of penetrating oil.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You do mate! The boots are clamped on and the oil runs down the rack when you pour it down (and its quite thick) 👍

      Not filling but adding enough oil to lubricate to the moving parts. No different to using oil in an engine the gaitors, not air tight, venting pressurised air.
