    Don't be rushing to get a new project or you'll end up like Hubnut with a selection of cars and none of them on the road. Stick to the one you've got and make it as you want it. I've 2 projects, one on the road and one that I can't be arsed to fix up, some cars just grab you and some you never jell with.🤗

    You carry on how you're doing mate. Softly softly, slowly and gradually. Not a lot of people understand what it's like to balance a family and a full time job, let alone also finding time for a project like this.
    The Viva is coming along fantastically and if it takes years to finish it, so be it. It'll be superb when it's done 👍 - Steve

    Having owned several Vivas years ago , make sure you top up the gearbox asap, they are quite small units ,and only hold about 1 litre ( if that), and therefore even a small leak will empty it quickly. It was however, usual for them to " sing" even when new!

    The bracket is the inlet manifold support goes on the bolt you were asking about. Your drivers brake light doesn't work. Also the green wire hanging underneath is for the reverse light switch on the gearbox. Keep up the good work mate! Great job mate your mot *should* come up on plods system as as "no results" and might set an ANPR alarm off if you pass one of them cameras BUT it still has to be roadworthy even without an MOT so you're likely to get a tug till you've tidied it up.
    An arsey copper can still cause you grief and even prohibit it from the road or make you get it recovered if they find stuff wrong at the roadside Now you've got it running pretty well, I'd concentrate on making it look prettier next that'll make life easier if you do get a tug - because they'll do that just to see if they can find owt
    All the best.

    Hi. Had a few Viva's back in the day. Like you every thing always needed fixing. Battery from the bigger engine cars can be fitted. I found that every earth point had to be 100%. Wiper linkage had some brass bushes in it that needs lubricating to work smoothly. Never let the gearbox oil level drop too low as it knackers the speedo drive, as I found out! Good luck and keep smiling.

    Reference the Mot exempt. I still try to put my cars in for an mot just in case!
    With my Morris Minor I have to admit that I did just put that one into an mot station for a safety check. As it turned out it was OK, I just wanted it checked over for peace of mind.
    I think you have to be careful, the dep't of transport sometimes do road safety checks looking for unsafe vehicles. Usually HGVs and vans but they can and do pull any vehicle over.
    The problem is the mot exempt thing looks great on the face of it. However if anything goes wrong like a traffic accident for instance. Then even if the vehicle was in good order the worry of it all would be really stressful.
    I'm sure yours will be OK you are doing your best to get it as right as a 40yr old vehicle can be

    Although the Viva is MOT exempt, it is still the road user’s responsibility to maintain the vehicle in a roadworthy condition. Failure to do so can result in fines or penalties. Best thing is to get an MOT for peace of mind.
    Carry on the good work. Good luck.

    Looks like it coming on leaps and bounds, excellent… liking the test drives too. As far a MOT’s and the police, I retired as a traffic officer last year, MOT’s for age exempt are shown on the PNC system as Not Held, which is the same as a car in its first 3 years (if I remember correctly). Cars within the MOT window that don’t have a valid certificate are generally shown as MOT expired. You may have to fill out a form and send to the the DVLA to register the exemption, know thats the process with a lot of other exemptions think the form is a v112 however it may be age automatic but worth checking out. Top video as usual👍🏻

    Good to see that the Viva is less reluctant to start, although it sounds like you will have to do something about the gearbox oil sooner rather than later.
    Battery: I usually work on the basis of "the biggest that will fit in the available space" - for example, on my CX the largest practical battery dimensions that will fit in the available space are 278mm long, 175mm wide, and 175mm high. (I could use a 190mm high battery but that would obstruct access to bolts and cables.) For the given 278/175/175 measurements, there are plenty of battery types that will fit, usually described as Type 063, 075 and 096.
    Having identified your preferred type, what's the greatest output available in terms of Ah and CCA which will help overcome a sticky starter? I found that anything above 70Ah, with a rating of 720 CCA or higher would work well in the CX. This works out at about 15% to 20% greater than the original specification but, given the age of the car, it needs all the help it can get.
    With the known output in mind, you can then look for a decent brand that should last a good long while. My choices are Exide (I have one in the VW Bora) and Bosch S5 (this is currently powering the CX).
    How often do you think you will run the Viva eventually? Once / twice a week? Every other day? Will it be mixed distances, or mainly short trips? Your alternator also needs to be up to scratch to keep that bigger battery going.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the info mate, I'll be after whatever bigger battery that I can fit in the viva tray, it's an odd size, I'll be driving the viva a fair bit once she's up and running, I have a maintenance charger for times when she'l be sitting for longer periods of time 👍

    • @smhorse
      @smhorse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroRebuild : what are the likely maximum dimensions that the Viva battery space will allow? Battery technology has come on a long way since the late 1970s / early 1980s, and greater outputs are available for a given battery size nowadays.

    Hi steve, that bracket attaches from carb to exhaust, i used to take front exhaust pipe off from underneath using long extension bars and wobbly joint attached to 13mm or half inch socket then get exhaust manifold off from top. Also one of your brake light isnt working they are double filament i think.

      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, I'll see if I can get into it next time, the brake light must be bad earth or connection, I did have it working again, yeah they are mate, stop and tail 👍

      😆thank you, I'm not sure mate! I've never had an angry comment from someone that was expecting to see me laying block paving or something 😆 although I'm sure there will be some actual drive way restoration when I eventually buy a house !

    I run a couple of tax/ MoT exempt cars. If you keep the tyres decent, all the lights working etc, you'll have no problem with the police. I'm sure there's some exceptions, but most 40+ year old cars are owned by enthusiasts which keep their cars up to a decent enough standard.
    Certainly no worse than the PCP'd Audi with bald tyres and brake pads down to the metal, inches from your bumper!

      😀, the only thing I'd get flagged on is my brake light being out! I need to sort dodgey connection or earth

    you have to apply for mot exemption steve

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know there's a self declaration for mot exemption, that you sign at the post office when you tax it there, I had to sign one when I switched it over to historic tax, but you don't need to apply for anything mate,

      @Michael Hudson I'm not sure if you're meant to carry the form with you tho, because the post office gives you it back after you've signed it, but yeah some form of document to produce would be a good idea
