Well worth watching tutorial. Very clear and easy to understand thanks Richard :DI've managed to convert my old budii lite router/modem/gateway into an access point following your instructions and using the tg789 router/modem/gateway provided by isp as my main router. The back shed was turned into a mancave but too far away for wifi to reach and didn't want to dig trenches for cables to run out there so I opted with using the 'powerline adapters' instead and it works a treat :)For those that don't know about powerline adapters yet, they are really easy to set up. They use your power lines that run through your walls to your power points as its Ethernet cable. So instead of running a 20 metre ethernet cable through the house all you do is plug in one powerline adapter into the power point next to your main router and attach short Ethernet cable from adapter to main router. Then plug other adapter in the power point in the room you want your other router to go and attach short Ethernet cable from adapter to the second router. Bam, done. (both the short Ethernet cables come with the pair of powerline adapers kit) If you only had one device to connect like your laptop you could just plug the laptop straight into the 2nd powerline adapter with an Ethernet cable and not use the 2nd router at all. But if you are anything like me you have plenty of devices and will want the extra lan ports and wireless connectivity of the router.Although I think I did read somewhere some of the powerline adapters have wireless abilities , but mine don't.To be clear, this is not to replace the method Richard just showed in the video. It is just to replace the long Ethernet cord he will use to connect his main router to his second router if running long cables isn't desirable or practical.

THANK YOU, Thank You!!!! I've read/watched several articles/videos on multiple router configuration and NOT ONE WORKED (or made sense). Within the first few minutes of your explanation, I KNEW it would WORK...It all made sense! I set up 3 routers, a Cysco, Amped and ASUS. EVERYTHING WORKS! All devices on the network now show up. All devices on the network can talk to each other! All devices have internet access. I am using Home Assistant (Home Automation) and have been hobbled over the past few months with switches/controllers/sensors too far away from the WiFi to work consistently. Decent WiFi repeaters are very expensive as are very powerful WiFi routers.. Now I have EASY access to everything with the 3 routers placed strategically around the house (pre-wired during the house construction with Cat-6a to remote locations, just-in-case). Great vid!

Thank you Richard, because of your tutorial I could connect 8 Tplink routers in one building has a fiber optic line with 300 speed, and still can get same speed on all routers, using your diagram as access points mode as many people get lot of network conflict that more than one router start assigning IP address as duplicates where problems start.
Yes 8 routers are possible and as long as there is only ONE dhcp server enabled with this configuration you should not get any conflicts but you might run out of IP addresses as you only have a maximum of 248 addresses. guys keep in mind he used the main router as rhe dhcp server, however, you can use dhcp enabled on other router as long as you set the range of ip’s as such that it doesn’t conflict with the other routers.
also keep in mind u can set the other 2 routers as bridge mode or in newer routers as mesh mode.

Really like your videos; I often point people who ask questions to you as your explanation is brilliant for novices. I often get asked about 'hiding' / 'closing' a network - essentially some people want to subnet a network with either communication between the subnets possible or not. You have a serious gift of teaching in getting what seemed to be a complicated matter down to a level that I am feeling confident enough to tackle a network project on my own. One thing I am not sure of, but you made brief mention of, is that every thing would be the same with the settings whether you put all routers in a series configuration like you did or just coming off of the Lan ports of the Main router? I am planning on running some underground CAT5e in different directions coming off the Lan ports and going to 3 different router locations and series configuration is not practical. All points will be outside of the others zones. I look forward to any future videos you get out. I am fan. Thanks
They can be in series and/or in a star configuration as long as they all are somehow connected to the primary router in some fashion. I get that you are trying to create the simplest plug n play setup, but a few things...
By connecting the wired connections in a daisy chain you increase congestion as the traffic from Router3 has to go via Router2. So all traffic from R3 and R2 goes down R2 to R1 cable.
If these are standard cable routers there are some benefits of using the blue ports; some are higher performance, for example the blue may be a Gigabit port, while orange are basic 10/100 ports.
There are also some benefits in segmenting the networks into different subnets, so 192.168.1.x, 192.168.2.x, 192.168.3.x and leaving each router to manage it's own DHCP, you would set gateway on R2 and R3 to R1 and can set DNS with 1st being R1 and second maybe being OpenDNS or Google 8.8.8.8.
Why would you want to do this?
Well a few reasons, say you had a bunch of NAS units and you wanted to put a firewall between them any old Joe who connects to your network. e.g. a house guest or kid's friends. You may also want to keep a barrier in case someone from the web hacks R1, many routers needed firmware update and those that did not get it were vulnerable. Of course anyone bright enough can figure out addresses if they know where to look and can break into Admin (hence passwords should be very secure), still good to slow them down.
Another reason are those lovely things called CHILDREN!
You connect your kids to R3, (make it a Wireless N router and it prevents them from hogging bandwidth), but the real beauty is when they have chores to do and are glued to wifi on their phone or maybe Gaming on their PC. A quick login from your phone to the router and you can block their mac address, disable DHCP or whatever. Hell you can just unplug R3 and soon enough they will come complaining, at which point you say "I am busy making dinner, oh can you take out the trash, empty the dishwasher and set the table while you are here".
Keeping things on the 192.168.x.x subnet keeps connectivity simple, but if you are designing something more complex there are two other private subnets. 172.16. (not all subnets) and 10.x.x.x the more complex you make it the more router config you need.
I have always moved my router IP addresses, I tend to stick them near the top of the range, maybe around 250, I also limit the IP's available on DHCP to just a handful for security reasons. I tend to leave 100-200 for static devices and 220+ for shared servers such as Plex. (plex.tv), you MUST take a look at that if you have not already.
I have recently done something interesting, I used an AC router which has a guest subnet network (with logins) to share my wifi on AC router, I used the 2.4GHz for this purpose which allows me to have granular access control for guests. Still had 2.4GHz for older devices and 5GHz for faster devices under usual SSID's.
Then when I changed ISP and there was a gap in service I used my AC router to login to another router and act as a wireless bridge. I have even managed to do this to extend a wifi hotspot that did not have reliable enough signal for devices.
This is a great way to stop employees using your wifi for their own stuff, you extend a wifi hotspot that they (or you) pay a subscription for, then make it company policy that they use the hotspot for their personal stuff like social media etc.
Keep up the good work with your videos, really love the battery ones, Chinese have got silly now with fake 10,000 and even 12000 mAh, just insults the intelligence. Of course the irony is most of those imax chargers are clones and need calibration.
I saw you got a turnigy battery charger, I was tempted by their 10A 80w unit but they changed the power port to XT60 (what idiot thought that was a good idea).
What I would like you to do is expose the fake Imax that say they are 80w (e.g. www.ebay.com/itm/263009416822) it is so obviously fake, they do not even bother to edit the images that say it is 5amp.
Perhaps do a head to head with the turnigy 80w, see if that actually charges quicker and uses the 10amps.
My next challenge is my drill, 30 x 1.2v nicad batteries to check each cell, renovate or replace whole lot with a frankenstein Li-ion 9 or 10x 3.7v 18650's
If you are looking for other fake stuff to expose, then the 2tb and other riduculous sized USB memory keys, these have fake firmware that makes them look as if 2tb but are just 64gb, they overwrite data you saved, they are incredibly slow (compression) and people lose data. Time eBay was named and shamed on these. You know they are fake because in the description they say they may be factory seconds or some other BS, simple fact is you could not fit 2tb of memory in that form factor.

I watched a few terrible videos on how to do this so I decided to make a video that showed a clear, simple and reliable way to get this done with a variety of different gear. I may get further into this subject and explain subnetting, collision domains and advanced routing. I suspect most people will not have the patience for that stuff but I may float a video on it and see how it goes.
My next power pack that runs out on my cordless drill will be getting replaced with Lithium cells. I may incorporate a charge protection circuit on it as well. I am currently testing a 36V power pack I bought on Ebay: goo.gl/Rz9rAi with 20 LG MF1 cells goo.gl/hMMN7T and so far the cells are performing beyond their 2150mAh specification. It comes with a BMS so I am going to test that as well. I suspect that it does not have a balance function but I will test that too. So far so good. Thanks for the feedback and kind comments. Great video Richard. Thank you very much for your help. If I may, I would like to add some steps to the process that may be important for some people, after experiencing myself problems to the connection process. I used the modem/router ZTE H108N V2.5 (4 lan ports, 0 wan port) for both my main modem/router and for the second modem/router. I will refer from now on to the main modem/router as "modem" and the secondary modem/router as "router".
Firstly i disconnected my laptop from the modem wifi and connected the router to the laptop using a patch cable. Then I connected to the router software and assigned 192.168.1.2 as the new connection ip for the router (from the factory ip 192.168.1.254) and then I deactivated DCHP before saving. Then I saved the changes. I tried to reconnect after 30" but I lost the ability to connect to the router, either using the old ip or the new saved one. I figured out that the reason was that the laptop already was connected through ipv4 DHCP to the network using the 192.168.1.2 ip (i realised that afterwards), so it stacked at trying to assing the 1.2 ip to a second device.
These are the steps I followed for my second and final attempt:
1) Without being connected to the network I changed my laptop ipv4 network settings from using DHCP to using a static ip of 192.168.1.9 with default gateway 192.168.1.254.
2) I factory resetted the router and connected again the router to the laptop using the patch cable. I reconnected to the router using the factory connection ip 192.168.1.254.
3) I changed the DHCP pool to 192.168.1.8 - 192.168.1.18 and saved.
4) I deactivated the DHCP and saved.
5) I changed the router connection ip to 192.168.1.2 and saved.
6) I reconnected to the router - after 30" - through the new assigned ip 192.168.1.2.
7) I changed my laptop ipv4 settings back to use DHCP.
8) I disconnected the router from the cable & turned it off, and connected my laptop through wifi to the modem software (192.168.1.254 factory ip).
9) I changed the dhcp pool to 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.200 and saved.
10) I changed the connection ip to 192.168.1.1 and saved. I reconnected to the modem afrer 30" using the new ip 192.168.1.1.
11) I changed the dhcp pool again to 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.254 just to increase it a bit.
12) I disconnected the laptop from the modem wifi. No active wifi connections now to the laptop, and the router disconnected from the laptop and turned off.
13) I connected the modem and the router together using the patch cable and turned back on the router.
14) I connected to the router wifi using my smartphone and to the modem wifi using my laptop.
15) I changed the channels to 1/11 for modem/router consequtively and made sure that the ssid names are different but recognisable enough so I will know which is which.
16) I connected the laptop to the router wifi and procceeded to check my internet status. I got top speed results on my speedtests, same as the modem speed tests. I also connected to modem software and the router software at the same time on 2 chrome tabs. I could navigate to both softwares at the same time.
17) As I final step I connected the router to the laptop again using a second patch cable just to be sure that the ethernet internet also worked besides the wifi connection. It worked great, with top speeds. All the devices (laptop, wifi printer, smartphone) got dhcp ip from 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.12. Of course I assigned my printer later on a static ip of 192.168.1.15 so as to be able to connect to its software without checking every time which ip it gets.
I hope that you did not experience any problems and all worked flawlessly like our friend Richard. If by any change you did have some similar problems to me I hope the steps I followed help you.

Richard, I have 3 netgear gigabit routers hooked up and they seem to be working fine. But the 5g networks have different channel numbers. Are there certain channels I should use?

Fabulous Video. My system was working perfectly for a couple years then suddenly stopped allowing internet access on 1 of the routers. Went back to this video. Had to physically reset all the routers before starting - wasted a frustrating 45 mins before figuring that out.

I got a question on WiFI channels. I'm gonna have a main router and an additional 4 routers scattered throughout my house. After I've exhausted channels 1, 6, and 11, do I just use AUTO for the 4th router and beyond?

I know what you mean about using the same SSID for more than one router on the same network. I did that with a 2 router arrangement, where I have a router upstairs & a router downstairs. The WiFi on the devices tend to get confused. I had to rename the WiFi like you did with a suffix of 1 & 2 or (1 for 1st floor & 2 for 2nd floor).
You are most welcome. I have people arguing with me on this but to each his own. I do state that if there is NO overlap in your WIFI zones from one router to another then you CAN have all the same SSID because as you leave one zone the WIFI connection to that router drops and as soon as you walk into the next zone you will connect automatically to the new WIFI device. This does not happen well if you have overlap as your WIFI device is programmed to hold on to the original WIFI signal as long as it can regardless of how strong the new WIFI signal is. It will not negotiate a new connection until it drops the original connection and it wont drop the original connection until it's too weak to communicate with. Thank you very much for the kind words. I have not done a video on using powerline network adapters with any of my configurations. I own a pair of TP-Link PLA's but they did not work very well (they did work but were very slow and unreliable). 22nd July, 2020 UK Hi, just to say thank you for showing us how to set up (3) a primary modem router and two TP link routers. I have just connected up the two TP links WR841N's to a (Uk Talk Talk faster broadband) modem router exactly as you described and it has worked! It took a bit of time to find my way around the primary Talk Talk faster broad band modem router but did so in the end. The Talk Talk primary modem router had already sectioned off the LAN on the advanced TAB so appearing to already release the 9 IP spaces so I left this alone. I had previously had some difficulty with Ring WIfI door bells and camera apparently conflicting with Sky TV that are working on the ethernet not sure why possibly something to do with DHCP disabling (?) I don't actually know. I saw elsewhere on the internet re any conflict with sky TV a suggestion to use a separate ethernet unmanaged switch before the middle number 2 TP link instead of altering any DHCP. I've followed everything you said (wirting it down) and with a spare switch and few spare shorter ethernet cables your set up has now worked. Many Thank again, Keep up the good work!. :-)
