I am so glad that you touched on the ethics of breeding satin pigs. Throughout the whole video all I could think was how cruel it is to purposefully breed an animal that could potentially have a painful disease that forever alters their life. And what would happen if a person that is already not knowledgeable about guinea pigs gets one of these poor pigs and doesn't even recognize the symptoms? Those poor pigs would most likely suffer with no pain relief. I think you did a wonderful job going over all of the points you made. Great video!

Thank you! It’s definitely an issue that’s worth being concerned over. Especially since carriers of the gene can develop satin syndrome even without having the phenotype of satin fur. Personally, I worry that the more breeders breed satins the more this gene will be present in the gene pool (and people won’t even be able to tell by looking) and the more guinea pigs will suffer. Hopefully raising awareness will help people know what to look out for and be aware for with their own pigs! Thanks for the support ❤️🫶🏻

This condition sounds much worse than I thought, horrible to breed.

Informative! I don’t know any pigs but to hear how much this particular breed goes through is heartbreaking. They shouldn’t be bred at all simply for the welfare of the pigs and for people emotional well-being when owning them

i absolutely agree satin shouldnt be bred. im pretty sure one of my girls is a satin. i didnt know she was until after i picked her up. the coat is pretty, but itll never be pretty enough to justify breeding a harmful condition

Thanks for this very informative video! I have a guinea pig that all of a sudden developed almost all the symptoms earlier this week and I'm taking her to the vet next week(that's the earliest I can get) She dose have a patch of satin fur and is current 1.5 years old

This is very informative thanks for sharing! There’s someone in one of my fb groups purposely breeding the satin line. Now I understand why so many were upset about it. 😮

Glad it was helpful! Yeah, definitely not a fan of those who breed satins. If the disease were more researched and it was proven that breeding satins more actually does "strengthen the gene" and make the chances of syndrome development less likely I would be less critical of them. But as it stands, there's just not enough research to claim more breeding is the solution to eradicating this disease, and I think breeders just say that so they hopefully face less backlash from those who aren't aware of the limited research.

Glad I found this video. I have a satin pig but not sure if she will or already has satin pig syndrome. Vet saw her for something else and said she is a satin pig. To confirm would cost a lot for an X-ray. Now I know what to keep an eye out for

    • @chasingshadows373

I got her like this but do not do any breeding

Glad to be helpful! I don't think you would need to do an x-ray unless she started showing symptoms like the bunny hopping - but hopefully she never develops anything!
