I love the fact that we can use our own style in this junk journal world and I find covering up the oopsies makes it even more creative and interesting ❤️thank you🌷
You know the people around me don’t get my junk journal style at all. However I don’t care because I love doing it and I like the outcome of my work. So Sue you be you and stop fretting. There are more people who like not perfect things but appreciate the vision of the person who created it.
Thank you Tina for a great idea that you taught today. Thanks for sharing part of your life with us as it really helped me as well as others with the perfection thing going on. You are right that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Don't second guess yourself. Enjoy what you do! If it doesn't come out right, remember it's only paper. Tear it up and try it again. Life is too short to worry. Be happy and love what you are doing. Happy journaling everyone! Thank you Tina!
Perfectionism kills creativity, I was crippled by it for a long time, it took me getting into journaling to realises it. Now my mistakes are my quirkiness, and if it’s not perfect so what. I’m feel liberated now. Love your talk, TFS
Wonderful talk & no need to apologize. You help me so much to accept myself as I am. As usual I love your work! And I love sharing my mornings with you!
Really great video! I loved what you said thank you for sharing it. You are so right… true crafting is art and should just be fun and your own individual style. I am a perfectionist but I have fallen in love with junk journaling because I don’t have to be perfect and we can fix anything so easily. When I first started Junk journaling I almost quit because nothing was “perfect” then I let go and embraced my style and now I love it and try to do it everyday! Thank you for sharing your style Tina, keep loving what you do and sharing it with us. 💖🌸💖
Oh thank you Laurette. I know exactly what you mean. There are artists who make everything look so amazing, really neat and perfectly finished and I still now feel in awe of their work. Equally though artists like Sigita make the most inspiring and awesome journals, and there is nothing neat and perfect in them, but they are 100% as amazing as the neat ones. In the end, you find your style that suits you, and accept how you work and you can really start to enjoy the process. Even though I’m saying this, I still have days that I wish I could do the whole neat thing! Lol 😆. Yes, I also love that anything goes with junk journals and that any mistakes can easily be fixed, often turning out better for the alteration x
I'm going to try these cute pockets. And please don't be embarrassed for sharing your story -- it's always interesting hearing about someone's journey.
You’re so sweet! It’s a shame you’re not able to work in counseling- I totally agree. Make what you love, it will show and resonate in others! Love theses flippy pockets too!
I love this project. I also love the fact that you talked about being perfect isn't what's necessary in junk journal crafting. I myself am a horrible perfectionist when it comes to my own artwork but I'm the only one who notices those imperfections. I think, we are our own worst critics and it feels good to just let those over achieving standards fall away when working on a junk journal. Thank you so much for this video.
Oh thank you so much, I am really pleased that you enjoyed the video. I so totally agree, we are definitely our own worst critics, others probably wouldn’t even notice the imperfections x
I think the whole point of crafting is to relax and find enjoyment. So many things in this world require us to be what others need us to be. Crafting should be the one thing we can do that expresses who we are....and part of who we are is having faults. If you don't love what you do take a photo of it and put it online.....there will be people that love it even when you don't. Of all the things in this world that people feel require perfection...crafting should be the one thing that requires nothing but heart, soul, and love. I love to put on some instrumental music and just start working on something. 9 times out of 10 if I can do it for just 30 minutes I will walk away more relaxed and much more calm than I was when I set down. It was good to see you today! Have an amazing week and a beautiful start to the Holiday Season.
Oh thank you Barbie for relaxing and spending your time with me. I couldn't agree more, life is stressful enough, crafting definitely shouldn't fall into this dark whole as well. Yes I agree, when I am struggling with anything in life generally, just a little time spent crafting takes my mind off things for a while and calms me down so much. x
lol and she does. She uses that dang stamp ALL THE TIme! I kid her and she laughs at my kidding and continues to use it because she loves it. The chat was good Tina. It helps us all to remember to be yourself and stop worrying about perfection.
I make one of a kind Art jewelry and now journals. In the beginning I would sort of apologize to a potential buyer for a "mistake" I made. One of my first, and still best customer looked at me and said, "If I wanted perfect machine made items I would go to the department store". People who buy/like handcrafted items want the organic. I have since purposely added/ or kept a flaw in every piece I've made. Not a big or awful one, mind you. But it has become my signature. Usually I am the only one who knows it but it makes me happy.---Rosee
Oh that is so lovely, a hidden flaw, like your signature, love it! Yes I agree, if you are wanting perfect, then you would buy from a store, but then you wouldn’t get all the prettiness and uniqueness that you do with a handmade piece x
I have never been a lace and bling girl but I love your ideas. Art mentoring isn’t about end product, it’s just being that voice that inspires. So don’t lose your voice. Blather away. I heard you.
Love your waffling... of course I love everything that you make. You know how I feel about overthinking. It wouldn't be fun if it had to be perfect because nothing ever comes out exactly like you want it to be. Noone would ever know that something didn't come out just right. Just do what you like and have fun...❤❤❤
WE ARE ALL oerfect, God Don't Make No Junk!! Many cultures incorporate mistakes in all their handmade items. American Indians see it as perfection. LOVE this flip pocket!!! Sitting here watching and listening to your story is as I was altering envelopes. The next thing I know I made an envelope to add to a page as a pocket behind it, with the side cut off to use as a side pocket and a flip off the other side. TY Tina 😊💕💚💜💗💙
On the note of perfectionism ; this craft is a personal journey. My advice to that lady is to say to yourself : " What's the worst that can happen?" Nobody else needs to see it. It's just paper. Nobody will die if it's not cut straight. Push yourself a little and praise your small achievements. My perfectionism comes form my insecurity.
How beautiful these pocket flip outs are! Am fascinated by how you make newish paper off cuts look look vintage. Also I never realised the need to make up things in advance for journals. Stands to reason! Lol. Good to know before I get started on making a journal. Thank you for sharing.
I love these thanks for sharing your ideas as well! You know what I keep telling myself... don't think just do. Just play, have fun don't overthink! We are all different and thats what make things great! DO YOU! I love junk journals to that! Oh and don't be so hard on yourself Tina, I love what you create with these mass makes! :) TFS
What a terrible system for counseling qualification! Ohhh dear! .... I so loved your pep talk on perfection. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏 I struggle with the perfection "driver" every day and it can be SUCH a joy killer! 🤗
Yes it can be such a terrible joy killer. Junk journals are a great way to try and let go though in a small way, as they are each so unique and anything goes, which is quite freeing when you normally strive to be perfect in everything x
Thank you for the reminder just to enjoy. I usually give myself a hard time about not measuring and cutting things right and I needed the reminder just to have fun.
Thank you so much, Tina, for your words of wisdom. Echos of totalitarian parents for whom nothing was ever good enough still linger even decades later. (Dad) ‘Do it right or don’t do it at all.’ (Mom) ‘What will the neighbors think?’ Then, of course, there’s me, comparing my work to those on TH-cam who have years of experience under their belts. The logical part of my brain knows this. The rest of my brain? Well, not so much, obviously. I believe other crafting novices can relate to this part as well: I have an analytic brain (left brain, yes?), not a creative (right brain) one. Prior to crafting, my only creative talents pertained to writing. An unexpected illness (a rare form of Lymphoma) permanently removed me from the workforce mid-2016 (I got my law degree at the age of 45, so I can absolutely sympathize with you in your discussion about roadblocks to your goal of becoming a counselor). I took up crafting to keep from going stark raving mad with boredom. I’ve fallen in love with junk journals and card-making. There are no other art forms I am drawn to. Nevertheless, it requires exercising the part of my brain that does not yet have much muscle. SO, going forward, I will focus on experimenting, having fun, and start looking at my work through a lens of ‘imperfections are aspects of what make junk journals unique.’ 🌺 x
Sue, I had written to Tina about the same thing!! I wasn't sure if she was addressing me, or not. Seems I was not alone! I am learning so much more from Tina than just craft! It's NICE!!
Sue, I am so pleased that you found some of my rambling useful and encouraging. I know what you mean, it is very difficult to shrug off years of criticism and put downs, be that in the form of parents, friends, workplace etc. I really do find junk journals very freeing from all those aspects of the past, as they really are a unique and personal thing. No one can tell you that it’s not correct or good enough, as it is your take on an idea, using your personal style. I am so sorry for your situation at work, I love that you had got your Law degree in your middle year’s, it takes such dedication to retrain. I am also a believer in things happening for a reason, and maybe at home being creative is where you are meant to be. Sometimes it can take a long time for that reason to become clear, but eventually it does and we think “ah, that’s why that happened”. Sending you well wishes and lots of positivity going forward x
Hi Sue, I was responding to Sue Turcotte who had asked for a little talk about the need to be perfect in her journals, however I certainly can relate to her feelings and I am glad that you also felt that way. Thank you for your kindness, I feel really humbled by your comment x
Loved this video and your rambling! :) I enjoyed getting to know you this way. It is a shame you can't use your training but then, we would miss out. TFS
Thank you Beverley, that's really kind of you. Yes definitely TH-cam and Journals has taken over all of my spare time now, I'm not sure I could fit any clients in even if there was opportunity x
To Sue’s comment I would say: “Watch more junk journaling videos”!! I am a perfectionist about pretty much everything & I have been both a quilter & a card maker for many years. I struggled because I never saw or heard about other people’s mistakes. I really thought I wasn’t very good because I can make several mistakes in any given project! Then, during the beginning of the (first) lockdown I was watching card-making videos & a junk journaling video popped up! I didn’t even know what that was. But I was intrigued… now a year & a half later, I still watch videos & I’m working on my 3rd project! I mainly watch about 8-10 different journalers & every single one of them has made mistakes while doing a video!! Some have been little “oopsies”, but a few have been pretty big. But each one of these wonderful women kept on going & figured out a way to overcome whatever had gone wrong! It’s the most-amazing thing to see: none started crying, swearing (well maybe quietly!) or throwing things against the wall!! And I don’t think any of them threw out the work. They were all matter-of-fact & just found a way out of their predicament! They all laughed or giggled, saying something like “oh well” That has truly been very good therapy for me! And it’s not that I laugh at their mistakes & it makes me feel better; NOT that at all!! They’re all just like me, doing the best they can with the skills, knowledge & experience they have! Many have been doing this for at least 3 or 4 years and still mistakes happen! I don’t remember exactly what I was doing, but I made a mistake & it wasn’t one I had seen anyone else make. I was pretty frustrated, but I could hear their words and eventually I figured a way out. If I hadn’t watched so many videos, I would have thrown that project out or walked away and not gone back. These women are wonderful! And they are all different personalities, different ages, different nationalities with different skills & interests. I love them all! They have been the best mentors & I credit them with being responsible for my growth as a crafter. You can’t go wrong! They will help you see a way through the mistake. I hope this rambling helps!
I was thrilled to hear you say you are a trained therapist! What a pleasant surprise! I can see you doing that! You have a wonderful sense of calm and patience! (That was what I had intentions of doing when I became disabled. I have patience with other people, especially children - just not myself!) I'm not sure if I am the 'Su' you speak of, but, I recall mentioning this to you in the last month or so. I am just one of those people that used to think everything had to be symmetrical or, at least, neat-as-a-pin, by-the-book, etc. Perfection was the rule! (Perfection IS taxing!) Watching you work with these papers and scraps and little pictures and the various media, and, how you finagle them together so 'imperfectly', but, with much thought, and beautiful results, has such a WONDERFUL effect on me and my craft! It's LIBERATING!! I'm enjoying the craft more and more! I, like you suggest, try not to think too hard about placement or decoration choices. That seems to work pretty well for me! Thank you so much!! I'm glad you went in to this here! It IS an insecurity - a lifelong struggle to please others with whatever, including perfection! What you say is very much appreciated! Blessings!!!
Oh thank you so much Sue for your kindness. My chat was aimed at a different Sue, who had requested specifically a bit of a chat on this theme, but it seems this has been helpful for many, so I am thrilled about that. It really means a lot to me that you are finding more and more pleasure from your crafting and that you find my methods freeing. Thank you x
Sorry I didn’t finish but it’s a real shame that you can’t put your qualifications to good use especially as it’s so needed given the world we live in Thanks again for sharing you experiences ,they were much appreciated xx
Yes Rita, I so agree how sad it is, especially with mental health being such a prominent issue at the moment. It is interesting to hear how things operate in different countries. I think you can do similar here also, I wouldn't have felt comfortable with such a route, but I'm sure many do. No, sadly I don't work in that field x
Thanks from sharing your story. Do you work in a simile field now? It seems like a real waste of much needed resources. In Australia counselling isn’t regulated so you could do any old course and call yourself a counsellorI think you have the temperament to make a great
You half watch and half listen while getting ready for work, or crafting. Please continue to tell stories! There’s two kinds of crafting videos. Videos with a lot of editing, and ones without or very little editing. The edited ones are made by people with a lot of time and who can sit in front of the computer for a couple hours or more. Some of them take the time to make a script. The non edited ones are meandering journeys through your process and ya gotta fill that journey with something. I love crafting, but there’s only so many qualities of paper and glue that I want to listen to hour after hour. :) so, they end up being vlogs of sorts. Don’t worry about the haters!
Oh thank you so much Elizabeth. Yes you are so right, there are the two kinds of videos. I enjoy both types, but for completely different reasons. I don't know how those people script their videos like that, I think that is a skill in itself x
Thank you for the little chat. We are family in this crafting world. Good to encourage instead of criticizing.
I love the fact that we can use our own style in this junk journal world and I find covering up the oopsies makes it even more creative and interesting ❤️thank you🌷

Great points Sherry, as long as we're enjoying what we're doing, and after all different strokes for different folks x

Bravo..........Myra Lynne
And if you tear it up, you’ll probably end up using those scraps and tidbits to make something fabulous!
Thank you Barbara, wise words x
Lol, Jeanne, yes we would all be using the torn up bits as scraps! X
Perfectionism kills creativity, I was crippled by it for a long time, it took me getting into journaling to realises it. Now my mistakes are my quirkiness, and if it’s not perfect so what.

I just love the way you work. It is always nice to hear you talk to us. Great job as always.

Lol, thank you Lala, love your "God Don't Make No Junk!!" sentiment x
See I'm right you are perfect 😘
I was deeply encouraged by your "ranting"! As a beginner to this lovely craft I really needed to hear it. Thank you for that
Oh thank you, I am so pleased that this was helpful, I felt quite embarrassed about it x

Great advice, and yes like you, I can so relate to the perfectionism coming from my own insecurities x

Thank you so much x
What a terrible system for counseling qualification! Ohhh dear! .... I so loved your pep talk on perfection. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏 I struggle with the perfection "driver" every day and it can be SUCH a joy killer! 🤗
Yes it can be such a terrible joy killer. Junk journals are a great way to try and let go though in a small way, as they are each so unique and anything goes, which is quite freeing when you normally strive to be perfect in everything x
Shabbydabbydoodah That is so true. The whole vintage, grungiest, torn, distressed, shabby style is very freeing! 🤗
I agree, there seems to be lovers of all the styles. Do you & have fun. :) tyfs!
Thank you for the reminder just to enjoy. I usually give myself a hard time about not measuring and cutting things right and I needed the reminder just to have fun.
Oops I forgot to say how much I love this mass make, I will be making them as soon as my migraine goes away. Great job!
Sending well wishes to you, migraines are just awful x
Shabbydabbydoodah thank you! I get them all the time, I hate that and I cannot craft when I have one… 🥺🥺🥺
These make a good addition to your journal
Loved it. Had a great time crafting along. Thank you!
Always enjoy your videos Tina!!
Thank you so much Brandy x
Good advice! Cute ephemera idea!
Great flip, going to make some. I enjoy hearing how things work in other countries, very interesting. TFS
Don’t be quiet. I love your chit chat.
HI, NOT TO WORRY, REALLY, WE'RE ALL ON OUR OWN PATH...KEEP ENJOYING YOUR STYLE, WE LOVE IT!!
Thank you so much Cynthia x
Thank for sharing, these are super cute! I’m gonna make some today!! 💕
Thank you so much, Tina, for your words of wisdom. Echos of totalitarian parents for whom nothing was ever good enough still linger even decades later. Great chat ☺
Love this!! You do a beautiful job!
Now I just want to fly to England & teach you to knit....crazy!
Lol, honestly I am hopeless, you would be flogging a dead horse with that one! 🤗😉😊🙃 x
These are great to have at the ready.
All true thoughts! I’ve had to let loose with some of my perfection. It’s hard but do able.
One of my mottoes: Everybody's good at something. You just have to find it.
Great sentiment to live by x

I'm not sure if I am the 'Su' you speak of, but, I recall mentioning this to you in the last month or so. I am just one of those people that used to think everything had to be symmetrical or, at least, neat-as-a-pin, by-the-book, etc. Perfection was the rule! (Perfection IS taxing!)
Watching you work with these papers and scraps and little pictures and the various media, and, how you finagle them together so 'imperfectly', but, with much thought, and beautiful results, has such a WONDERFUL effect on me and my craft!
Here's a little folded pamphlet I made: instagram.com/suruha2306/

Oh thank you so much Sue for your kindness. My chat was aimed at a different Sue, who had requested specifically a bit of a chat on this theme, but it seems this has been helpful for many, so I am thrilled about that. It really means a lot to me that you are finding more and more pleasure from your crafting and that you find my methods freeing. Thank you x
Thank you for sharing your pictures, have just clicked the link and left a comment, I love your use of colour x
A week late.... a week early.... We'll take you with relish however and whenever you arrive x
wonderwend1 Agree
Lol, thank you so much, that is really kind of you x
Love your ring. Blue lapis?? stone
Thank you Sherry, just a cheapy that I picked up on holiday in the summer x
Thanks from sharing your story. Do you work in a simile field now? It seems like a real waste of much needed resources. In Australia counselling isn’t regulated so you could do any old course and call yourself a counsellorI think you have the temperament to make a great
I’ll take a dollar bet on that forgetting. Lol
Lol x
Could you give me the link to the artist you were talking about?
It’s Sigita, she does the most amazing work th-cam.com/users/frenca2020 x
Good advice however SUE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! and if it doesn’t work out it’s only paper. Crumble it up and start over.
