    I hate to study from the book, and this video just explains why. Within 6 minutes I fully understood what was told, while reading and writing and understanding from reading takes so much longer. Thanks

    Really enjoyed this video! Well done, clearly explained, and with great examples. I have to find this information for a student customer for a Ph.D. thesis on discipline in international schools. It's a key part of the Conceptual Framework. So this really helps! And it helps me to understand my life also, how I get things done without having formal powerful position. I seem to have all the forms other than Legitimate and Coercive.

    Here's a real life story about sharing information too widely. We were working for a company that hire d project managers that then sold our services to AT&T. our trainer put together an amazing packet of all of our processes and the little things that we would do to be successful and shared those with our company. The company then took this training material and hired out of country before closing down our office. So be cautious if you developed information or material within your company and sharing two broadly or you may be providing that to your replacements.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great example. I have ad several organizations attempt to get me to send them all of my materials for training and I suspect in some cases it was to just take the content.

    It was actually Ben Parker who said "with great power comes great responsibility". If anyone wants to quote that in an essay i've actually written a citation for it :
    With great power, comes great responsibility” (Lee, 2002 pp38)
    Lee, S. (2002). The Amazing Spiderman. ed. Marvel Comics. Volume 2, Number 38.

    Great video! These forms of power are all exerted outwardly. Do French & Raven, or other experts you know, have any work on the kind of power that is exerted on inwardly, i.e., PERSONAL POWER or SELF-EMPOWERMENT?

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Marie-Claude. Forgive my lengthy answer. Most traditional research on power is about the exercise of power, Person A has power over Person B. There are other types of "critical theory" power concepts that look at how culture, systems, and ideologies position some people as dominant and other people as submissive.
      But the type of empowerment or personal power you're talking about comes from an entirely different research tradition. There's plenty of research out there on that but it comes mostly from studies in Psychology and related fields. It's not so much about "power" as such as it is about personal agency. I haven't done many videos that go in that direction but it's a fascinating area of study.

    • @Marie-ClaudeLessard
      @Marie-ClaudeLessard ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexanderlyon Thank you for taking the time to answer. Your comment about 'personal agency' vs 'personal power' is exactly why I believe the dialogue needs to be expanded and our language adapted to foster attitudes and support behaviours which better reflect our capacity as creators. I respect and appreciate the excellent work you do so I trust you will take this reply as a healthy exchange of ideas. I delivered a TEDx Talk on Nov. 15th and am waiting for it to be uploaded. I can't wait to see how it will be received... It's about how to cultivate personal power. I would be grateful if you offered your two cents if you land on it. Keep up your great work!

      @@Marie-ClaudeLessard I'd love to see your TEDx talk. If we're connected on LinkedIn, please contact me that way. I often miss comments on videos like this when they are a conversation. I only get notified for an initial comment, not the follow-up. That's why it took me 7 days to notice this one. Sorry about that.
