This is a great portrayal of Bond becoming Bond. A newly promoted 007, he makes mistakes, gets emotional, and falls in love. When he's betrayed, he ices over and becomes the Bond we know.
"The job's done. And the bitch is dead." Actually a line in the novel.

We all make mistakes but the mistakes bond makes involves his selfless sacrifice for the good of his country and the world, for the innocents and the weak he protects. He is such a good man.

@@Jackholiday1025 Well this is romanticized, obviously... But at the "core" if we take this in the "real world" he's not a good man: he's a spy, a killer working only for his government interest. Of course the "gov propaganda" story telling is that he's on the "good side", "saving the world", but that's not a fact.
(But, it's fun and great to dive into it for the movies, and of course we, as spectator are on the good side with him).

Vesper’s dialogue in the dinner scene after Bond wins is fascinating.
She says, "You've got a choice, you know. Just because you've done something, it doesn't mean that you have to keep doing it." On the surface, she's talking about Bond being an agent and killing people, but the subtext for her is she's talking about betraying her government and by extension, Bond. She's already in love with him, and she's having to deal with the realities of her situation. It was easy for her to betray her government when it was just a faceless institution, but it's much more difficult for her now that she deeply cares about someone personally victimized by her betrayal. By saying that Bond still has a choice in what he does, she is also saying that she can choose to stop being a traitor. But she can't quite convince herself, which is why she's so adamant that Bond can change; it's not really about whether Bond can change, it's about whether she can.
Bond returns with a quip about people who can't take advice being the ones who always give it. This startles Vesper because, like the scene on the train, he can see through her. He can't see completely through her; he doesn't know what she's struggling with, but he can see that she's driven by something. Vesper is so rattled by Bond's insight that she's put on the defensive and answers his question with a question of her own, sidestepping the issue. Bond brings the issue back to the forefront by revealing how much he's able to see through her, and saying that he'll never know what's driving her. This is a perfect opportunity for Vesper to come clean and tell him everything, but the opportunity is lost.
She gets a text, Bond realizes that Mathis is a traitor, Vesper is kidnapped, then Bond is kidnapped, and then she is forced to make a deal to save Bond's life by giving up the money Bond won in the tournament. After that, it's too late for her. She can't tell him her situation because the people she was working with would kill Bond. So they continue to fall in love, but she knows the relationship is doomed. Her only hope is to die and pay for her sins against Bond. She knows he'll hate her forever, but his hatred is worth it if it keeps him alive. She loves him more than she values her own life.

    • @spartanical
      @spartanical ปีที่แล้ว +5

Very nice observation. I think too that it wasn't just that she cared about someone victimized by her betrayal, but also that Bond became an example of true sacrifice and steadfastness. She got to see what he was willing to do for his country and that betrayal could never even be a consideration for him. He nearly died by poison but then shrugged it off as quickly as he could muster to return to his mission. He didn't falter or look for an excuse to not go on. There is no slowing down, no giving up. He is absolutely willing to do whatever he can and I think she felt shame at putting one person above her country and all of its citizens; at selfishly ignoring the bigger picture. At least in spirit I think this may have occurred to her, whether or not she could actually articulate that way.

The Bond-messing-up stuff is one of the best grace notes of this movie. He's becoming the James Bond we know as the film goes on. Ford Focus to old Aston Martin to new Aston Martin. Fizzy drink to martini. Holding onto a sliver of humanity...and losing it by the end to no longer be a the blunt instrument and become "Bond, James Bond", the last words of the film, spoken for the first and only time just as the 007 fanfare finally blasts in full. A glorious tragedy in a way.

What you don’t realize is this is based off of Flemmings first novel Casino Royale, it’s also a very faithful modern adaptation that actually also expands the story well. Bond didn’t have the martini as his drink originally, it was instead what he ordered a brandy or whiskey usually on ice. He makes the Vesper martini of course and that becomes his drink of choice because he always feels the pain of losing her deep down, and he drowns those memories with that drink.

As a result, he's rougher around the edges, makes plenty mistakes and many of the Bond staples simply aren't there yet. Admittedly the writing does fall into the 'hammer-it-in' trap at times ("Do I look like I give a damn!"), but still people complained about the lack of these things as if they just didn't get this new approach, so clearly it needed stating quite firmly.

I love Casino Royale as it’s my favorite bond movie alongside Skyfall😆🔥. I really enjoyed watching it with you guys. I loved the action sequences in this film, especially the opening chase scene and the plane scene👍. Daniel Craig did a great job playing bond as it’s one of his most iconic roles. We get to see Bond have a weakness in this film which is “Vesper” his love interest and someone who he can’t live without, someone who means so much to him and when she dies he feels a little lost; it’s something we haven’t seen in any of the other bond films, and it was great to see that🔥. Judi Dench was born to play M as she brought so much grace to the Bond franchise😁. Hopefully you guys react to the all the Daniel Craig bond movies🙏. Loved your reaction/analysis, take care and have a good one❤️

One of the best moments of all the story of the channel XD. And yeah, we can say so from the two versions: the Daniel Craig run and the classic interpretations. It's just that, depending on the story, it's more prominent or not (when faced with action and comedy).

Although I love the older Bond films, I feel like Daniel Craig is the perfect embodiment of the character. I always thought that the other Bonds were too "pretty boy" in nature and lacked the thuggish (no judgement) side required to actually battle with the world's worst criminals. Craig's Bond is an absolute beast who can also move comfortably in polite society, and in my mind, this is how a real spy would have to operate.

No, he was in this film, then they got all political correct and the franchise went downhill, hell I read the books Authors kids, they told how the were going to take the character into a much darker place and lose the whimsical fir the most part. So, its not Bond. If I want to see a Bourne Identity movie I can just put one on.

Daniel Craig was chosen as the new James Bond in part due to the success of the newly introduced Jason Bourne franchise played by Matt Damon. The new James Bond portrayed by Daniel Craig is significantly more physical in the action and fighting scenes (like Matt Damon as Jason Bourne) and has a darker character than the other Bond actors in earlier films.

You're right. When The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy were released in 2002 and 2004, the James Bond producers/writers realized they needed a new type of James Bond, because the contemporary James Bond looked campy and stupid next to Jason Bourne, resulting in Daniel Craig's rough version of Bond and Casino Royale (2006).

Couldn't wait for Craig to be Bond after seeing him in Layer Cake. His Martini is stronger than rubbing alcohol, but clean tasting, and slightly floral. Traditional spirits were a higher proof when the recipe was written than they are today.
