Dear Potter's Pink, I remember when we first met. I thought you were beautiful and offered you a drink of water but you refused to come out to play. I was sad we didn't get to know each other. I still think you are lovely. Fondly, T. Grey

Potter’s Pink used dilutely is like a granulation medium, I use it to add texture all the time in the most unexpected mixes. My favourite colour to mix it with is indanthrone blue

I bought it to paint a pig originally then had no use for it until I went on vacation to Mesa, Arizona and realized potter’s pink was all over the place. Depending on where you live it might be a great landscape color. I also used it in a mix with quinacridone coral for a scarlet ibis and adored it as well.

I was looking for this type of comment! I live in southern Nevada and often explore the red rocks, including visiting Utah and Arizona. This color caught my eye because many of the "red rocks" have a lot of pink in them! And the natural granulation goes without saying. Potters Pink and the Perylene Violet make the exact color of many of the shadows of the red rocks. I'm curious about trying the Daniel Smith version.

The color spotlight is back! A real favorite! I have both W&N and a Daniel Smith potter's pink. I enjoy working with W&N but had nothing but problems with DS. It was hard, heavily separated from the binder and it became the only professional paint I've thrown away. Love this episode!

I went and bought a halfpan each of Schmincke and W&N, and the W&N rewets easily! Perhaps not As good as the Schminke one, but not That far off. I know their tube formulas are different though, so I can only speak for the pan version. The color also seems darker than yours, Denise. Like a middle thing between your W&N sample and the Schminke one (Edit: That seems to only be on some papers, on others they are virtually indistinguishable). Thought maybe this info could benefit someone! ☺️

  • @ellenk560
    @ellenk560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Ohh, I wonder if the W&N swatch was from the dot card I sent you like eleventy-billion years ago... Pretty sure it was on there... At any rate, I still love Potter's Pink, despite the rewetting issue once dried in a pan... I love using it for pinking on the white markings of horses, especially their noses. I mix it with a trace of warmish yellow to brighten it up, and it works really well.

  • @ladyflimflam

This looks like it would be a lovely addition to my botanical palette. Most of my mixing occurs on the page so I tend to buy pigments for themselves rather than their potential to mix lots of colors.

    • @leonorlatour9250

I hope you did try it. Mixed with yellows, it gives fantastic golden hues. With reds, it subtly changes the color in a nice way. With blues it becomes grey or purplish according to the percentage of blue.

I've learned so much from your swatch with me and colour spotlight series as well as your skillshare classes, and am finally about to buy my own palette of professional paints. So thank you for all the beautiful videos and the education. (I also enjoy watching them because watching watercolour flow is a great visual stim for a lil neurodivergent bean such as me haha!)

Thanks for getting the Color Spotlights going again. I really like them and find them very educational. Love your little piggy! He's just right for this color. The color is interesting. I like it. It's kind of brownish pink. Don't quite know what I'd use it for - maybe on tree trunks where the bark has peeled away. I do a lot of florals and trees. I sure hope you are doing well. I keep you on my prayer list. God bless, dear Denise.

I love potters pink. It looked like you had some beautiful colors mixed with it but it was very difficult to see from the angle of the camera toward the paper. I think an overhead setup would be better to let us see the mixing of the colors together and the beautiful granulation that’s occurs. Nonetheless, thank you for highlighting this amazing color!

I bought Potters Pink by Winser & Newton way back in 2009. It looked like the sand on the Pacific beaches as the sun sets in that pink glow. But to this day, I have not found it useful for the type of work I do. My biggest issue, its a pain to rewet. Same with Terre Verte green. I wanted to try the Schmincke because it will rewet well and got a sample. But it looks like dirt with a little pink mixed in. I like the W&N one. So I added enough Glycerin to make it behave more like Sennelier or M Graham. I still have not used it.

I finally got around to enjoy this beautiful video! I remember buying potters pink by schmincke and trying it out for the first time. I used it for skin and hair at that time to let the hue shine, but ultimatly I prefer brighter pinks as stand-alones. My Potters pink now is in my palettes for its mixing and granular properties, and I really love using it! Just recently I painted a dragon's scale with a mix of PY150 and PR233, which turned into a great granular and dusky gold that I completely fell in love with.

Love your little potter's pink piggy! I also love these color spotlight series so much, they're such helpful videos for us pigment nerds, as are Oto Kano's color series. My only quibble has been when you and Oto get to the granulating pigments like these, the infamous "low tinting strength", colors and then mix them on the palette. I completely understand that you do it for consistency for each color, so I'm glad that you briefly showed your initial testing swatch sheet and linked to Liz Steel's page. While I do sometimes mix colors like viridian, potter's pink, lapis lazuli, etc on the palette, the great strength of these colors is how they mix/don't mix on the page, i.e. the way they intermingle with other pigments on the page without losing their color and gorgeous granulating characteristics. Watercolorists who want bright colors for their style of painting may not enjoy these colors, but they are awesome for loose painting, landscapes and urban sketching. I've never used the Schmincke version before (enjoy the DS version), but it looks like a very versatile version of Potter's Pink so I'm looking forward to adding it to my palette.

For a comparative granulating pink, I really like Daniel Smith's English Red Earth (not to be confused with English Red Ochre)-it's a series one colour, so one of the most affordable in the Daniel Smith line; It's an earth pink closer to that first W&N swatch but with more body, it's opaque, lifting, on the low-tinting side but not wicked-witch-melts-away-in-water level of low-tinting, it's not nearly as granulating as PR233 of course but once I squeezed out the massive centimeter in-tube "binder split" and got past the PR101 drying shift...I just really like it, as a muted "vintage pastel" mixer, and in blushes for stylized painterly portraits.
I'll definitely try it on architecture, once it's safe to go out urban sketching again!

Gosh Denise, would have loved to have sent you the Dan Smith Potters pink for this video. I don’t know if it is just my tube of the DS Potters pink but I didn’t care for it. It is very gelatinous out of the tube since the binder had separated from the pigment and my poured pans of it is very hard to rewet. I bought the Schmincke version and find it easier to rewet and use. The Winsor and Newton version looks light and lovely! I wonder if it’s easy to rewet and work with, need to give it a go. Yayyy,my fav color^^BTW I'm thinking about making my own potters pink(since the tubes are too hard to activate)What do you think?

Glad you like the color! I'm not sure how handmade versions rewet. I assume that big brands have a lot of tools available to them and that they're still hard to rewet for a reason! That being said, Schmincke's reactivates great if you haven't tried it.

Besides selling the pigments to make potters pink, Kremer also sells premade pans of their own potters pink mix. I havent tried it yet, but you may want to check that one out!

Denise, I hope you are doing well. You seem a little slightly less energetic in this video. Hope this observation doesn't offend or take away from the video (it doesn't at all). Just sincerely hope you're doing okay. I know this quarantine has had a negative impact on my mental health personally, so I'm just a little more observant lately of others and hoping others are doing okay too. Let us know how you're doing and don't hesitate to take some time for yourself or take a break if you need

Thank you Stephen. It's been pretty rough but I'm doing my best and trying to be kind to myself. This video in particular took six days instead of the usual three to make, so that's likely what you're hearing, haha. I'll be spreading out the videos a bit, but still checking in when I can. Wishing you all the best too during this difficult time!

I live daily with bipolar depression disorder, anxiety, PTSD and BPD. Even though I don’t know specifically what you go through, I can say I know the struggles are tough. But we’re artists and understand the healing powers that come through our creativity. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. They’re spoken clearly and full of knowledge. I’m used to working mainly with acrylic and oils, so I get rather confused at times about color numbers and such. I’m going to do some binging on your videos and learn from, who I feel, is the best watercolor mage 🧙‍♀️ on TH-cam. Bright blessings 🌸

I've watched this video when it came out, but rewatched now that I found out that many of the new granulating schmincke paints use this one in the mix. I have the tiny WN tube that I've never used, but seeing the tone difference I feel like trying the Schmincke one for mixes too. Anyone could help me deciding if to get a tube or a full pan? I've seen comments about difficulty to rewet

Denise, would you offer some advice for beginners just getting started in watercolor? I watched your old journal flip through that showed a bit of your progression. I really liked the sillouette studies and thought that might give me an understanding of how paints interact. I’m working with washes now (I should say, struggling.) Would you mind giving some insight into getting started with watercolor?

I have PP in my palette after taking a course from Liz Steel and really like its granulating properties. However, I have the WN brand and it dries up so quickly in my palette, and it takes quite a bit of effort to pull enough pigment into the brush to get any color from it. After this I will definitely try to do a page of swatches to see if I can duplicate your results, and maybe come up with other combinations and applicaitons!!! Appreciate all of your hard work in doing these spotlights---saves me paper:)!!!
