This Southwest Mushrooms guy has the most precise operation I have watched on youtube so far. Some people have done some stuff using straw or hay. This makes me wonder if lawn clippings can be used. They are mostly grass, and hay is basically domesticated grass.
Whatever you use should be dried up and not contain too many ingredients. Hardwood sawdust is the best. Some mushrooms like oyster thrive on wheat/paddy straw as well. I've heard that leaf litter also works for oyster mushrooms. Also 70% used coffee grounds mixed with 30% straw and even 50% Cocopeat mixed with 50% vermiculite (some even suggest adding gypsum to this) are other options.

I came into the comments looking for the answer to this question! Im curious if he used both pints of spawn we saw in the sab or if that was split between a couple bags, or what actually happens at that point in the video.
Would the hardwood pellets not already be sterilised through the manufacturing process of turning the hardwood into pellets? I use straw pellets to grow various types of mushrooms and skip the pressure cooking of the substrate and have never had issues of contaminates. Do you think you absolutely need to pressure cook the substrate in the bag?
Bryan, honestly I don't think it's necessary. It doesn't make sense...the pellets are manufactured at a very high temperature and pressure, much higher than the thermal death point for thermophilic bacteria...pressure cooking seems unnecessary. I think the only thing that contributes to the potential for contamination in my process is the wheat bran, as I'm not sure what temperatures or conditions that material sees during processing. And yet, while I acknowledge all of this, I continue to pressure cook my bags. I'd like to take a more scientific approach to getting away from pressure cooking, and it's something I'll definitely be exploring more in the future. I haven't been very vocal about these goals, but I'd like to refine a process that doesn't use pressure cooking and doesn't use single-use plastics... but can still produce on a large enough scale for small time grower to be able to use it. Thanks for watching, and thank you for the thought provoking comment.
@@OneEarthMushrooms Thanks for the explanation on this. I personally haven't used wheat bran before but that makes sense that it is a source of potential contamination. If your thinking to skip the pressure cooking you could try and mix the grain spawn with the hardwood pellets and only use half the water. Then if you leave it for a couple of hours and add the rest of the water and wheat bran, you can provide the mycellium a head start in cultivating the substrate over competing bacteria. As long as your using something between 10 - 20% spawn to substrate ratio, this should minimize the chance of contamination. I live in the UK though, I think you mentioned living in hawaii so maybe you need to be more paranoid in that climate. Thanks for the great videos, just went through and watched some others on your channel. How do you use the lions mane mushroom? Hi Laura! Having the correct moisture content in the substrate is pretty important; if it's too wet it could develop "wet rot", and if it's too dry, you may experience slow colonization or a failure to colonize at all. Air exchange isn't super important, you don't need any fresh air while colonizing. He wasn't doing a grain to grain transfer here, he was transfering his fully colonized grain into a bag of substrate, which is something you'll have to do even if you start with a liquid culture.
Can you use rice bran in place of wheat bran?
Not sure! I've never tried rice bran.
I need a pressure cooker so I can do this
where did you get the filtered bags?
Shroom supply
Your Gypsum calculation is based on wet weight. It should be based on dry weight. You're using 113g gypsum instead of 38g.
Hi I was wondering what your recommended spawn to substrate ration was
I usually end up using 3:1 or 4:1.
@@OneEarthMushrooms by weight or by volume?
The still-air box is an interesting superstition. I prefer to just pray to the Mushroom Gods to spare me from contamination.
Could You just use coconut coir since Your in Hawaii?
Some species are known for preferring wood
I'll give it a try! I'm sure that would work. Pretty easy to get coconuts around here.
Who uses wood pellets to heat their homes? Is that what they're used for? I've be so wrong all these years wasting them on smoke BBQ.
Haha yeah a lot of people in the north use them for home heating! There are cheaper ones made from soft wood that work great for heating. The hardwoods (apple, maple, etc) are great for smoking.
My eyes are bleeding watching you work in SAB
Mine mold
"I ran out of Gypsum powder" ... those AC bags are smaller than they look on the Zon ain't they ;) #samehere
Haha yeah, totally! I gotta find a source closer...I think I saw gypsum at my local feed store. It was a 50 pound bag for like...$10.

@@s7r49 yes, it is too wet.
You can add a little hydrogen peroxide and then you don't have to PC for so long
My man, thats gypsum dust is not good for you
Do not pressure cook your substrate, pasteurize it!
This video shows everything you are not supost to do.....
Super amateur....
I am! Learning as I go :)
@@OneEarthMushrooms just so you know you don't have to sterilize wood pellets..and you can do alot more sub at once by Coldwater pasteurizing ...and gypsum is useless imo
@Kyle P ♥ Pro tip: no one cares if you come off as a wiener. Try using less aggressive comments so people can listen to your valuable information
How long did u put in pressure cooker for?
Can you use bucket to grow them in if you have purchased grain spawn already? Thanks
